JXTA-Overlay: a P2P platform for distributed, collaborative, and ubiquitous computing
With the fast growth of the Internet infrastructure and the use of large-scale complex applications in industries, transport, logistics, government, health, and businesses, there is an increasing need to design and deploy multifeatured networking applications. Important features of such applications include the capability to be self-organized, be decentralized, integrate different types of resources (personal computers, laptops, and mobile and sensor devices), and provide global, transparent, and secure access to resources. Moreover, such applications should support not only traditional forms of reliable distributing computing and optimization of resources but also various forms of collaborative activities, such as business, online learning, and social networks in an intelligent and secure environment. In this paper, we present the Juxtapose (JXTA)-Overlay, which is a JXTA-based peer-to-peer (P2P) platform designed with the aim to leverage capabilities of Java, JXTA, and P2P technologies to support distributed and collaborative systems. The platform can be used not only for efficient and reliable distributed computing but also for collaborative activities and ubiquitous computing by integrating in the platform end devices. The design of a user interface as well as security issues are also tackled. GCP: Gossip-based Code Propagation for Large-scale Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks
Wireless sensor networks (WSN) have recently received an increasing interest.
They are now expected to be deployed for long periods of time, thus requiring
software updates. Updating the software code automatically on a huge number of
sensors is a tremendous task, as ''by hand'' updates can obviously not be
considered, especially when all participating sensors are embedded on mobile
entities. In this paper, we investigate an approach to automatically update
software in mobile sensor-based application when no localization mechanism is
available. We leverage the peer-to-peer cooperation paradigm to achieve a good
trade-off between reliability and scalability of code propagation. More
specifically, we present the design and evaluation of GCP ({\emph Gossip-based
Code Propagation}), a distributed software update algorithm for mobile wireless
sensor networks. GCP relies on two different mechanisms (piggy-backing and
forwarding control) to improve significantly the load balance without
sacrificing on the propagation speed. We compare GCP against traditional
dissemination approaches. Simulation results based on both synthetic and
realistic workloads show that GCP achieves a good convergence speed while
balancing the load evenly between sensors
Enabling Social Applications via Decentralized Social Data Management
An unprecedented information wealth produced by online social networks,
further augmented by location/collocation data, is currently fragmented across
different proprietary services. Combined, it can accurately represent the
social world and enable novel socially-aware applications. We present
Prometheus, a socially-aware peer-to-peer service that collects social
information from multiple sources into a multigraph managed in a decentralized
fashion on user-contributed nodes, and exposes it through an interface
implementing non-trivial social inferences while complying with user-defined
access policies. Simulations and experiments on PlanetLab with emulated
application workloads show the system exhibits good end-to-end response time,

Enhancing coverage and reducing power consumption in peer-to-peer networks through airborne relaying
IETF standardization in the field of the Internet of Things (IoT): a survey
Smart embedded objects will become an important part of what is called the Internet of Things. However, the integration of embedded devices into the Internet introduces several challenges, since many of the existing Internet technologies and protocols were not designed for this class of devices. In the past few years, there have been many efforts to enable the extension of Internet technologies to constrained devices. Initially, this resulted in proprietary protocols and architectures. Later, the integration of constrained devices into the Internet was embraced by IETF, moving towards standardized IP-based protocols. In this paper, we will briefly review the history of integrating constrained devices into the Internet, followed by an extensive overview of IETF standardization work in the 6LoWPAN, ROLL and CoRE working groups. This is complemented with a broad overview of related research results that illustrate how this work can be extended or used to tackle other problems and with a discussion on open issues and challenges. As such the aim of this paper is twofold: apart from giving readers solid insights in IETF standardization work on the Internet of Things, it also aims to encourage readers to further explore the world of Internet-connected objects, pointing to future research opportunities
