    Deuce: A Lightweight User Interface for Structured Editing

    We present a structure-aware code editor, called Deuce, that is equipped with direct manipulation capabilities for invoking automated program transformations. Compared to traditional refactoring environments, Deuce employs a direct manipulation interface that is tightly integrated within a text-based editing workflow. In particular, Deuce draws (i) clickable widgets atop the source code that allow the user to structurally select the unstructured text for subexpressions and other relevant features, and (ii) a lightweight, interactive menu of potential transformations based on the current selections. We implement and evaluate our design with mostly standard transformations in the context of a small functional programming language. A controlled user study with 21 participants demonstrates that structural selection is preferred to a more traditional text-selection interface and may be faster overall once users gain experience with the tool. These results accord with Deuce's aim to provide human-friendly structural interactions on top of familiar text-based editing.Comment: ICSE 2018 Paper + Supplementary Appendice

    Frame-Based Editing: Easing the Transition from Blocks to Text-Based Programming

    Block-based programming systems, such as Scratch or Alice, are the most popular environments for introducing young children to programming. However, mastery of text-based programming continues to be the educational goal for stu- dents who continue to program into their teenage years and beyond. Transitioning across the significant gap between the two editing styles presents a difficult challenge in school- level teaching of programming. We propose a new style of program manipulation to bridge the gap: frame-based edit- ing. Frame-based editing has the resistance to errors and approachability of block-based programming while retaining the flexibility and more conventional programming seman- tics of text-based programming languages. In this paper, we analyse the issues involved in the transition from blocks to text and argue that they can be overcome by using frame- based editing as an intermediate step.     A Pilot Study of Speech and Pen User Interface For Graphical Editing

    As computer size continues to decrease and new user interface technologies become more ubiquitous, the conventional keyboard and mouse input interfaces are becoming harder to design into newer machines and less practical for use in some applications. The pen is one input technology more suited for the upcoming generation of smaller computers using direct manipulation interfaces. However, a pen-only user interface relies on continuous gesture and handwriting tecognizers that are often slow, inaccurate, and error prone for command and text entry. Speech recognition is an input modality that can input commands quickly and potentially be a fast text entry mechanism, but lacks the capability of direct object manipulation and has inaccurate recognition. The combination of both pen and voice input should complement each other for direct graphic manipulation applications. This thesis compares the speed, usability, user-friendliness, and accuracy of a pen-only graphical editor against a pen-with-speech graphical editor. Two versions of a graphical editor were developed which have the same functionality. One is controlled by pen input alone and the other is controlled by both pen and speech input. The pen-only editor used the tool bar for command entry and character handwriting recognition for text entry. The pen-with-speech editor used speech recognition for both command and text entry. In a pilot study using both editors, 13 computer science graduate students were asked to draw a petri net, a state diagram, a flowchart, and a dataflow diagram. Shape entry was facilitated by automatic shape recognition that transformed continuous drawing information into a perfected shape. Experimental results comparing the editor\u27s user interfaces were then analysed. Results show that the addition of speech made the editor slightly faster. Experimental subjects claimed this editor was more usable, perceived to be faster, and preferred to use. About half of the subjects found the editor with speech not to be more user-friendly than the pen-only editor. The accuracy of character recognition for the pen-with-speech editor was significantly inferior to the pen-only editor\u27s handwriting recognition. The low recognition accuracy was caused by the speech recognizer\u27s inability to distinguish between similar sounding letters

    A language-sensitive text editor for Dutch

    Modern word processors begin to offer a range of facilities for spelling, grammar and style checking in English. For the Dutch language hardly anything is available as yet. Many commercial word processing packages do include a hyphenation routine and a lexicon-based spelling checker but the practical usefulness of these tools is limited due to certain properties of Dutch orthography, as we will explain below. In this chapter we describe a text editor which incorporates a great deal of lexical, morphological and syntactic knowledge of Dutch and monitors the orthographical quality of Dutch texts. Section 1 deals with those aspects of Dutch orthography which pose problems to human authors as well as to computational language sensitive text editing tools. In section 2 we describe the design and the implementation of the text editor we have built. Section 3 is mainly devoted to a provisional evaluation of the system

    A Syntax-Directed Editor for Borland’s Turbo Pascal

    This study details the design and implementation of the LSD program, a syntax-directed editor for use in editing the source code for Borland’s Turbo Pascal. LSD is a dual-mode editor which allows both traditional text editing and also grammar-based editing. LSD promotes better programming for novice users by allowing the user to edit the program with a graphical representation of a parse tree. A list of syntactically correct choices is displayed at each point where a choice must be made in the structure of the program. Since only these choices are available, no syntax errors are possible. For more advanced users, the ability to take an existing program and display the syntax tree will help show the underlying structure of the Pascal language grammar

    A graphical representation for the formal description technique Estelle

    Includes bibliographical references.This dissertation concerns the specification and description of complex communicating systems using Formal Description Techniques. Specifically, we propose a standard graphical representation for the Formal Description Technique Estelle and present a prototype editor based on this representation. Together they integrate the new graphical representation with existing Estelle textual tools to create a powerful graphical design technique for Estelle. The perennial popularity of graphical techniques, combined with recent advances in computer graphics hardware and software which enable their effective application in a computing environment, provide a double impetus for the development of a graphical representation for Estelle. Most importantly, a graphical technique is more easily read and understood by humans, and can better describe the complex structure and inter-relationships of components of concurrent communicating systems. Modern graphical technology also presents a number of opportunities, separate from the specification method, such as hyperlinking, multiple windows and hiding of detail, which enrich the graphical technique. The prototype editor makes use of these opportunities to provide the protocol engineer with an advanced interface which actively supports the protocol design process to improve the quality of design. The editor also implements translations between the graphical representation and the standard Estelle textual representation, on the one hand allowing the graphical interpretation to be applied to existing textual specifications, and on the other, the application of existing text-based processing tools to a graphical specification description

    Collaborative editing of knowledge resources for cross-lingual text mining

    The need to smoothly deal with textual documents expressed in different languages is increasingly becoming a relevant issue in modern text mining environments. Recently the research on this field has been considerably fostered by the necessity for Web users to easily search and browse the growing amount of heterogeneous multilingual contents available on-line as well as by the related spread of the Semantic Web. A common approach to cross-lingual text mining relies on the exploitation of sets of properly structured multilingual knowledge resources. The involvement of huge communities of users spread over different locations represents a valuable aid to create, enrich, and refine these knowledge resources. Collaborative editing Web environments are usually exploited to this purpose. This thesis analyzes the features of several knowledge editing tools, both semantic wikis and ontology editors, and discusses the main challenges related to the design and development of this kind of tools. Subsequently, it presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of the Wikyoto Knowledge Editor, called also Wikyoto. Wikyoto is the collaborative editing Web environment that enables Web users lacking any knowledge engineering background to edit the multilingual network of knowledge resources exploited by KYOTO, a cross-lingual text mining system developed in the context of the KYOTO European Project. To experiment real benefits from social editing of knowledge resources, it is important to provide common Web users with simplified and intuitive interfaces and interaction patterns. Users need to be motivated and properly driven so as to supply information useful for cross-lingual text mining. In addition, the management and coordination of their concurrent editing actions involve relevant technical issues. In the design of Wikyoto, all these requirements have been considered together with the structure and the set of knowledge resources exploited by KYOTO. Wikyoto aims at enabling common Web users to formalize cross-lingual knowledge by exploiting simplified language-driven interactions. At the same time, Wikyoto generates the set of complex knowledge structures needed by computers to mine information from textual contents. The learning curve of Wikyoto has been kept as shallow as possible by hiding the complexity of the knowledge structures to the users. This goal has been pursued by both enhancing the simplicity and interactivity of knowledge editing patterns and by using natural language interviews to carry out the most complex knowledge editing tasks. In this context, TMEKO, a methodology useful to support users to easily formalize cross-lingual information by natural language interviews has been defined.     `Electronic Publishing' -- Practice and Experience

    Electronic Publishing -- Origination, Dissemination and Design (EP-odd) is an academic journal which publishes refereed papers in the subject area of electronic publishing. The authors of the present paper are, respectively, editor-in-chief, system software consultant and senior production manager for the journal. EP-odd's policy is that editors, authors, referees and production staff will work closely together using electronic mail. Authors are also encouraged to originate their papers using one of the approved text-processing packages together with the appropriate set of macros which enforce the layout style for the journal. This same software will then be used by the publisher in the production phase. Our experiences with these strategies are presented, and two recently developed suites of software are described: one of these makes the macro sets available over electronic mail and the other automates the flow of papers through the refereeing process. The decision to produce EP-odd in this way means that the publisher has to adopt production procedures which differ markedly from those employed for a conventional journal
