    Discovering the Impact of Knowledge in Recommender Systems: A Comparative Study

    Recommender systems engage user profiles and appropriate filtering techniques to assist users in finding more relevant information over the large volume of information. User profiles play an important role in the success of recommendation process since they model and represent the actual user needs. However, a comprehensive literature review of recommender systems has demonstrated no concrete study on the role and impact of knowledge in user profiling and filtering approache. In this paper, we review the most prominent recommender systems in the literature and examine the impression of knowledge extracted from different sources. We then come up with this finding that semantic information from the user context has substantial impact on the performance of knowledge based recommender systems.     Personalized content retrieval in context using ontological knowledge

    Personalized content retrieval aims at improving the retrieval process by taking into account the particular interests of individual users. However, not all user preferences are relevant in all situations. It is well known that human preferences are complex, multiple, heterogeneous, changing, even contradictory, and should be understood in context with the user goals and tasks at hand. In this paper, we propose a method to build a dynamic representation of the semantic context of ongoing retrieval tasks, which is used to activate different subsets of user interests at runtime, in a way that out-of-context preferences are discarded. Our approach is based on an ontology-driven representation of the domain of discourse, providing enriched descriptions of the semantics involved in retrieval actions and preferences, and enabling the definition of effective means to relate preferences and context

In this paper we focus on the combination of contextualization and personalization methods to improve the performance of personalized information retrieval. The key aspects in our proposed approach are a) the explicit distinction between historic user context and live user context, b) the use of ontology-driven representations of the domain of discourse, as a common, enriched representational ground for content meaning, user interests, and contextual conditions, enabling the definition of effective means to relate the three of them, and c) the introduction of fuzzy representations as an instrument to properly handle the uncertainty and imprecision involved in the automatic interpretation of meanings, user attention, and user wishes. Based on a formal grounding at the representational level, we propose methods for the automatic extraction of persistent semantic user preferences, and live, ad-hoc user interests, which are combined in order to improve the accuracy and reliability of personalization for retrieval.This research was partially supported by the European Commission under contracts FP6-001765 aceMedia and FP6-027685 MESH.     Intelligent personalized approaches for semantic search and query expansion

Many services are advertised and provided to the users through online channels. The user looks for services and obtains them through different search engines. To obtain the best results that meet the needs and requirements of the users, researchers have extensively studied methods such as different personalization methods by which to improve the performance and efficiency of the retrieval process. A key part of the personalization process is the generation of user models. The most commonly used user models are still rather simplistic, representing the user as a vector of ratings or using a set of keywords. Recently, semantic techniques have had a significant importance in the field of personalized querying and personalized web search engines. This thesis focuses on both processes of personalized web search engines, first the reformulation of queries and second ranking query results. The importance of personalized web search lies in its ability to identify users' interests based on their personal profiles. This work contributes to personalized web search services in three aspects. These contributions can be summarized as follows: First, it creates user profiles based on a user’s browsing behaviour, as well as the semantic knowledge of a domain ontology, aiming to improve the quality of the search results. However, it is not easy to acquire personalized web search results, hence one of the problems that is encountered in this approach is how to get a precise representation of the user interests, as well as how to use it to find search results. The second contribution builds on the first contribution. A personalized web search approach is introduced by integrating user context history into the information retrieval process. This integration process aims to provide search results that meet the user’s needs. It also aims to create contextual profiles for the user based on several basic factors: user temporal behaviour during browsing, semantic knowledge of a specific domain ontology, as well as an algorithm based on re-ranking the search results. The previous solutions were related to the re-ranking of the returned search results to match the user’s requirements. The third contribution includes a comparison of three-term weight methods in personalized query expansion. This model has been built to incorporate both latent semantics and weighting terms. Experiments conducted in the real world to evaluate the proposed personalized web search approach; show promising results in the quality of reformulation and re-ranking processes compared to Google engine techniques

    With millions of pages available on web, it has become difficult to access relevant information. One possible approach to solve this problem is web personalization. Web personalization is defined as any action that customizes the information or services provided by a web site to an individual. When personalization is applied to the semantic web it offers many advantages when compared to the traditional web because semantic web integrates semantics with the unstructured data on web so that intelligent techniques can be applied to get more efficient results. We have presented various approaches that are used for personalization in semantic web in this paper. The core of semantic web is the ontologies which are defined as explicit formalization of a shared understanding of a conceptualization. We exploit the machine understandable feature of semantic web to device strategies that perform effective personalization such that the results returned to the user are more relevant to the goal set by him.     Position paper on realizing smart products: challenges for Semantic Web technologies

    In the rapidly developing space of novel technologies that combine sensing and semantic technologies, research on smart products has the potential of establishing a research field in itself. In this paper, we synthesize existing work in this area in order to define and characterize smart products. We then reflect on a set of challenges that semantic technologies are likely to face in this domain. Finally, in order to initiate discussion in the workshop, we sketch an initial comparison of smart products and semantic sensor networks from the perspective of knowledge technologies

    Knowledge will Propel Machine Understanding of Content: Extrapolating from Current Examples

    Machine Learning has been a big success story during the AI resurgence. One particular stand out success relates to learning from a massive amount of data. In spite of early assertions of the unreasonable effectiveness of data, there is increasing recognition for utilizing knowledge whenever it is available or can be created purposefully. In this paper, we discuss the indispensable role of knowledge for deeper understanding of content where (i) large amounts of training data are unavailable, (ii) the objects to be recognized are complex, (e.g., implicit entities and highly subjective content), and (iii) applications need to use complementary or related data in multiple modalities/media. What brings us to the cusp of rapid progress is our ability to (a) create relevant and reliable knowledge and (b) carefully exploit knowledge to enhance ML/NLP techniques.     Personalization in cultural heritage: the road travelled and the one ahead

    Over the last 20 years, cultural heritage has been a favored domain for personalization research. For years, researchers have experimented with the cutting edge technology of the day; now, with the convergence of internet and wireless technology, and the increasing adoption of the Web as a platform for the publication of information, the visitor is able to exploit cultural heritage material before, during and after the visit, having different goals and requirements in each phase. However, cultural heritage sites have a huge amount of information to present, which must be filtered and personalized in order to enable the individual user to easily access it. Personalization of cultural heritage information requires a system that is able to model the user (e.g., interest, knowledge and other personal characteristics), as well as contextual aspects, select the most appropriate content, and deliver it in the most suitable way. It should be noted that achieving this result is extremely challenging in the case of first-time users, such as tourists who visit a cultural heritage site for the first time (and maybe the only time in their life). In addition, as tourism is a social activity, adapting to the individual is not enough because groups and communities have to be modeled and supported as well, taking into account their mutual interests, previous mutual experience, and requirements. How to model and represent the user(s) and the context of the visit and how to reason with regard to the information that is available are the challenges faced by researchers in personalization of cultural heritage. Notwithstanding the effort invested so far, a definite solution is far from being reached, mainly because new technology and new aspects of personalization are constantly being introduced. This article surveys the research in this area. Starting from the earlier systems, which presented cultural heritage information in kiosks, it summarizes the evolution of personalization techniques in museum web sites, virtual collections and mobile guides, until recent extension of cultural heritage toward the semantic and social web. The paper concludes with current challenges and points out areas where future research is needed
