    Mosaic Warfare: from philosophy to model to solutions

    The paper relates to advanced management of large distributed dynamic systems in unpredictable and crisis situations. It briefs the newest DARPA Mosaic Warfare concept oriented on rapidly composable networks of low-cost sensors, multi-domain command and control nodes, and cooperative manned and unmanned systems, with runtime integration of scattered resources which should operate together as one holistic system. It may have the highest value for solving complex national and international defense and security problems for which scattered throughout the world mosaic resources should be quickly integrated to collectively fight disaster and crisis situations, with separate nations unable of doing this individually. The paper shows how distributed mosaic systems can be modeled under the developed Spatial Grasp Technology (SGT) using active distributed knowledge networks, with solving such exemplary problems on them as runtime collection of scattered resources into integral forces operating under unified control, and grouping of certain distributed resources for the surrounding and collective elimination of unwanted phenomena.Стаття присвячена розширеному управлінню великими розподіленими динамічними системами в непередбачуваних і кризових ситуаціях. Викладено новітню концепцію Агентства оборонних проектів (DARPA) Мозаїчні війни, орієнтовану на швидко компоновану мережу сенсорів, багатодоменних вузлів управління, а також спільні пілотовані і безпілотні системи з інтеграцією розкиданих ресурсів, які повинні працювати разом як єдина система. Це може мати особливе значення для вирішення складних національних і міжнародних проблем оборони і безпеки, де розкидані по всьому світу мозаїчні ресурси повинні швидко об’єднуватися для колективної боротьби з лихами і кризами, оскільки окремі країни не в змозі здійснювати це самостійно. Показано, як розподілені мозаїчні системи можна моделювати за допомогою розробленої Технології просторового захоплення (ТПЗ), яка використовує активні розподілені мережі знань, вирішуючи такі проблеми, як збір і інтеграція в реальному часі поширених ресурсів під єдиним управлінням і групування таких ресурсів для колективної ліквідації небажаних явищ.Статья посвящена расширенному управлению большими распределенными динамическими системами в непредсказуемых и кризисных ситуациях. Изложена новейшая концепция Агентства оборонных проектов (DARPA) Мозаичные войны, ориентированная на быстро компонуемые сети сенсоров, многодоменных узлов управления, а также совместные пилотируемые и беспилотные системы с интеграцией разбросанных ресурсов, которые должны работать вместе как единая система.     Multi-Sensor Information Fusion for Optimizing Electric Bicycle Routes Using a Swarm Intelligence Algorithm

    [EN]The use of electric bikes (e-bikes) has grown in popularity, especially in large cities where overcrowding and traffic congestion are common. This paper proposes an intelligent engine management system for e-bikes which uses the information collected from sensors to optimize battery energy and time. The intelligent engine management system consists of a built-in network of sensors in the e-bike, which is used for multi-sensor data fusion; the collected data is analysed and fused and on the basis of this information the system can provide the user with optimal and personalized assistance. The user is given recommendations related to battery consumption, sensors, and other parameters associated with the route travelled, such as duration, speed, or variation in altitude. To provide a user with these recommendations, artificial neural networks are used to estimate speed and consumption for each of the segments of a route. These estimates are incorporated into evolutionary algorithms in order to make the optimizations. A comparative analysis of the results obtained has been conducted for when routes were travelled with and without the optimization system. From the experiments, it is evident that the use of an engine management system results in significant energy and time savings. Moreover, user satisfaction increases as the level of assistance adapts to user behavior and the characteristics of the route

    Temporospatial Context-Aware Vehicular Crash Risk Prediction

    With the demand for more vehicles increasing, road safety is becoming a growing concern. Traffic collisions take many lives and cost billions of dollars in losses. This explains the growing interest of governments, academic institutions and companies in road safety. The vastness and availability of road accident data has provided new opportunities for gaining a better understanding of accident risk factors and for developing more effective accident prediction and prevention regimes. Much of the empirical research on road safety and accident analysis utilizes statistical models which capture limited aspects of crashes. On the other hand, data mining has recently gained interest as a reliable approach for investigating road-accident data and for providing predictive insights. While some risk factors contribute more frequently in the occurrence of a road accident, the importance of driver behavior, temporospatial factors, and real-time traffic dynamics have been underestimated. This study proposes a framework for predicting crash risk based on historical accident data. The proposed framework incorporates machine learning and data analytics techniques to identify driving patterns and other risk factors associated with potential vehicle crashes. These techniques include clustering, association rule mining, information fusion, and Bayesian networks. Swarm intelligence based association rule mining is employed to uncover the underlying relationships and dependencies in collision databases. Data segmentation methods are employed to eliminate the effect of dependent variables. Extracted rules can be used along with real-time mobility to predict crashes and their severity in real-time. The national collision database of Canada (NCDB) is used in this research to generate association rules with crash risk oriented subsequents, and to compare the performance of the swarm intelligence based approach with that of other association rule miners. Many industry-demanding datasets, including road-accident datasets, are deficient in descriptive factors. This is a significant barrier for uncovering meaningful risk factor relationships. To resolve this issue, this study proposes a knwoledgebase approximation framework to enhance the crash risk analysis by integrating pieces of evidence discovered from disparate datasets capturing different aspects of mobility. Dempster-Shafer theory is utilized as a key element of this knowledgebase approximation. This method can integrate association rules with acceptable accuracy under certain circumstances that are discussed in this thesis. The proposed framework is tested on the lymphography dataset and the road-accident database of the Great Britain. The derived insights are then used as the basis for constructing a Bayesian network that can estimate crash likelihood and risk levels so as to warn drivers and prevent accidents in real-time. This Bayesian network approach offers a way to implement a naturalistic driving analysis process for predicting traffic collision risk based on the findings from the data-driven model. A traffic incident detection and localization method is also proposed as a component of the risk analysis model. Detecting and localizing traffic incidents enables timely response to accidents and facilitates effective and efficient traffic flow management. The results obtained from the experimental work conducted on this component is indicative of the capability of our Dempster-Shafer data-fusion-based incident detection method in overcoming the challenges arising from erroneous and noisy sensor readings

    Biologically Inspired Connected Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

    Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) have become commonplace in the automotive industry over the last few decades. Even with the advent of ADAS, however, there are still a significant number of accidents and fatalities. ADAS has in some instances been shown to significantly reduce the number and severity of accidents. Manufacturers are working to avoid ADAS plateauing for effectiveness, which has led the industry to pursue various avenues of investment to ascend the next mountain of challenges – vehicle autonomy, smart mobility, connectivity, and electrification – for reducing accidents and injuries. A number of studies pertaining to ADAS scrutinize a specific ADAS technology for its effectiveness at mitigating accidents and reducing injury severity. A few studies take holistic accounts of ADAS. There are a number of directions ADAS could be further progressed. Industry manufacturers are improving existing ADAS technologies through multiple avenues of technology advancement. A number of ADAS systems have already been improved from passive, alert or warning, systems to active systems which provide early warning and if no action is taken will control the vehicle to avoid a collision or reduce the impact of the collision. Studies about the individual ADAS technologies have found significant improvement for reduction in collisions, but when evaluating the actual vehicles driving the performance of ADAS has been fairly constant since 2015. At the same time, industry is looking at networking vehicle ADAS with fixed infrastructure or with other vehicles’ ADAS. The present literature surrounding connected ADAS be it with fixed systems or other vehicles with ADAS focuses on the why and the how information is passed between vehicles. The ultimate goal of ADAS and connected ADAS is the development of autonomous vehicles. Biologically inspired systems provide an intriguing avenue for examination by applying self-organization found in biological communities to connecting ADAS among vehicles and fixed systems. Biological systems developed over millions of years to become highly organized and efficient. Biological inspiration has been used with much success in several engineering and science disciplines to optimize processes and designs. Applying movement patterns found in nature to automotive transportation is a rational progression. This work strategizes how to further the effectiveness of ADAS through the connection of ADAS with supporting assets both fixed systems and other vehicles with ADAS based on biological inspiration. The connection priorities will be refined by the relative positioning of the assets interacting with a particular vehicle’s ADAS. Then based on the relative positioning data distribution among systems will be stratified based on level of relevance. This will reduce the processing time for incorporating the external data into the ADAS actions. This dissertation contributes to the present understanding of ADAS effectiveness in real-world situations and set forth a method for how to optimally connect local ADAS vehicles following from biological inspiration. Also, there will be a better understanding of how ADAS reduces accidents and injury severity. The method for how to structure an ADAS network will provide a framework for auto-manufacturers for the development of their proprietary networked ADAS. This method will lead to a new horizon for reducing accidents and injury severity through the design of connecting ADAS equipped vehicles.Ph.D

    Automatic object classification for surveillance videos.

    PhDThe recent popularity of surveillance video systems, specially located in urban scenarios, demands the development of visual techniques for monitoring purposes. A primary step towards intelligent surveillance video systems consists on automatic object classification, which still remains an open research problem and the keystone for the development of more specific applications. Typically, object representation is based on the inherent visual features. However, psychological studies have demonstrated that human beings can routinely categorise objects according to their behaviour. The existing gap in the understanding between the features automatically extracted by a computer, such as appearance-based features, and the concepts unconsciously perceived by human beings but unattainable for machines, or the behaviour features, is most commonly known as semantic gap. Consequently, this thesis proposes to narrow the semantic gap and bring together machine and human understanding towards object classification. Thus, a Surveillance Media Management is proposed to automatically detect and classify objects by analysing the physical properties inherent in their appearance (machine understanding) and the behaviour patterns which require a higher level of understanding (human understanding). Finally, a probabilistic multimodal fusion algorithm bridges the gap performing an automatic classification considering both machine and human understanding. The performance of the proposed Surveillance Media Management framework has been thoroughly evaluated on outdoor surveillance datasets. The experiments conducted demonstrated that the combination of machine and human understanding substantially enhanced the object classification performance. Finally, the inclusion of human reasoning and understanding provides the essential information to bridge the semantic gap towards smart surveillance video systems
