    The importance of information flows temporal attributes for the efficient scheduling of dynamic demand responsive transport services

    The operation of a demand responsive transport service usually involves the management of dynamic requests. The underlying algorithms are mainly adaptations of procedures carefully designed to solve static versions of the problem, in which all the requests are known in advance. However there is no guarantee that the effectiveness of an algorithm stays unchanged when it is manipulated to work in a dynamic environment. On the other hand, the way the input is revealed to the algorithm has a decisive role on the schedule quality. We analyze three characteristics of the information flow (percentage of real-time requests, interval between call-in and requested pickup time and length of the computational cycle time), assessing their influence on the effectiveness of the scheduling proces

    Reallocation Problems in Scheduling

    In traditional on-line problems, such as scheduling, requests arrive over time, demanding available resources. As each request arrives, some resources may have to be irrevocably committed to servicing that request. In many situations, however, it may be possible or even necessary to reallocate previously allocated resources in order to satisfy a new request. This reallocation has a cost. This paper shows how to service the requests while minimizing the reallocation cost. We focus on the classic problem of scheduling jobs on a multiprocessor system. Each unit-size job has a time window in which it can be executed. Jobs are dynamically added and removed from the system. We provide an algorithm that maintains a valid schedule, as long as a sufficiently feasible schedule exists. The algorithm reschedules only a total number of O(min{log^* n, log^* Delta}) jobs for each job that is inserted or deleted from the system, where n is the number of active jobs and Delta is the size of the largest window.Comment: 9 oages, 1 table; extended abstract version to appear in SPAA 201

    Cost-Efficient NFV-Enabled Mobile Edge-Cloud for Low Latency Mobile Applications

    Mobile edge-cloud (MEC) aims to support low la- tency mobile services by bringing remote cloud services nearer to mobile users. However, in order to deal with dynamic workloads, MEC is deployed in a large number of fixed-location micro- clouds, leading to resource wastage during stable/low work- load periods. Limiting the number of micro-clouds improves resource utilization and saves operational costs, but faces service performance degradations due to insufficient physical capacity during peak time from nearby micro-clouds. To efficiently support services with low latency requirement under varying workload conditions, we adopt the emerging Network Function Virtualization (NFV)-enabled MEC, which offers new flexibility in hosting MEC services in any virtualized network node, e.g., access points, routers, etc. This flexibility overcomes the limitations imposed by fixed-location solutions, providing new freedom in terms of MEC service-hosting locations. In this paper, we address the questions on where and when to allocate resources as well as how many resources to be allocated among NFV- enabled MECs, such that both the low latency requirements of mobile services and MEC cost efficiency are achieved. We propose a dynamic resource allocation framework that consists of a fast heuristic-based incremental allocation mechanism that dynamically performs resource allocation and a reoptimization algorithm that periodically adjusts allocation to maintain a near- optimal MEC operational cost over time. We show through ex- tensive simulations that our flexible framework always manages to allocate sufficient resources in time to guarantee continuous satisfaction of applications’ low latency requirements. At the same time, our proposal saves up to 33% of cost in comparison to existing fixed-location MEC solutions

    Impact of travel time uncertainties on the solution cost of a two-echelon vehicle routing problem with synchronization

    Two-echelon vehicle routing problems which contain synchronization between vehicles can be deeply impacted by time uncertainty, because one vehicle's delay can propagate to other vehicles. In this paper, we evaluate the deterministic solution of such a problem based on simulated travel time scenarios. The information obtained by simulation is incorporated in the optimization procedure iteratively. Computational results show that the degree of synchronization in an instance is directly correlated with the potential improvements by reoptimization. We present findings on the number of travel time scenarios required to obtain a representative picture of the stochastic solutions. In addition, we demonstrate that time dependent travel times can be aggregated on a city-wide level and linearized as a function of free flow times without major loss of reliability

    Optimizing and Reoptimizing: tackling static and dynamic combinatorial problems

    As suggested by the title, in this thesis both static and dynamic problems of Operations Research will be addressed by either designing new procedures or adapting well-known algorithmic schemes. Specifically, the first part of the thesis is devoted to the discussion of three variants of the widely studied Shortest Path Problem, one of which is defined on dynamic graphs. Namely, first the Reoptimization of Shortest Paths in case of multiple and generic cost changes is dealt with an exact algorithm whose performance is compared with Dijkstra's label setting procedure in order to detect which approach has to be preferred. Secondly, the k-Color Shortest Path Problem is tackled. It is a recent problem, defined on an edge-constrained graph, for which a Dynamic Programming algorithm is proposed here; its performance is compared with the state of the art solution approach, namely a Branch & Bound procedure. Finally, the Resource Constrained Clustered Shortest Path Tree Problem is presented. It is a newly defined problem for which both a mathematical model and a Branch & Price procedure are detailed here. Moreover, the performance of this solution approach is compared with that of CPLEX solver. Furthermore, in the first part of the thesis, also the Path Planning in Urban Air Mobility, is discussed by considering both the definition of the Free-Space Maps and the computation of the trajectories. For the former purpose, three different but correlated discretization methods are described; as for the latter, a two steps resolution, offline and online, of the resulting shortest path problems is performed. In addition, it is checked whether the reoptimization algorithm can be used in the online step. In the second part of this thesis, the recently studied Additive Manufacturing Machine Scheduling Problem with not identical machines is presented. Specifically, a Reinforcement Learning Iterated Local Search meta-heuristic featuring a Q-learning Variable Neighbourhood Search is described to solve this problem and its performance is compared with the one of CPLEX solver. It is worthwhile mentioning that, for each of the proposed approaches, a thorough experimentation is performed and each Chapter is equipped with a detailed analysis of the results in order to appraise the performance of the method and to detect its limits

    Changing Bases: Multistage Optimization for Matroids and Matchings

    This paper is motivated by the fact that many systems need to be maintained continually while the underlying costs change over time. The challenge is to continually maintain near-optimal solutions to the underlying optimization problems, without creating too much churn in the solution itself. We model this as a multistage combinatorial optimization problem where the input is a sequence of cost functions (one for each time step); while we can change the solution from step to step, we incur an additional cost for every such change. We study the multistage matroid maintenance problem, where we need to maintain a base of a matroid in each time step under the changing cost functions and acquisition costs for adding new elements. The online version of this problem generalizes online paging. E.g., given a graph, we need to maintain a spanning tree TtT_t at each step: we pay ct(Tt)c_t(T_t) for the cost of the tree at time tt, and also TtTt1| T_t\setminus T_{t-1} | for the number of edges changed at this step. Our main result is an O(logmlogr)O(\log m \log r)-approximation, where mm is the number of elements/edges and rr is the rank of the matroid. We also give an O(logm)O(\log m) approximation for the offline version of the problem. These bounds hold when the acquisition costs are non-uniform, in which caseboth these results are the best possible unless P=NP. We also study the perfect matching version of the problem, where we must maintain a perfect matching at each step under changing cost functions and costs for adding new elements. Surprisingly, the hardness drastically increases: for any constant ϵ>0\epsilon>0, there is no O(n1ϵ)O(n^{1-\epsilon})-approximation to the multistage matching maintenance problem, even in the offline case

    A network airline revenue management framework based on decomposition by origins and destinations

    We propose a framework for solving airline revenue management problems on large networks, where the main concern is to allocate the flight leg capacities to customer requests under fixed class fares. This framework is based on a mathematical programming model that decomposes the network into origin-destination pairs so that each pair can be treated as a single flight leg problem. We first discuss that the proposed framework is quite generic in the sense that not only several well-known models from the literature fit into this framework but also many single flight leg models can be easily extended to a network setting through the prescribed construction. Then, we analyze the structure of the overall mathematical programming model and establish its relationship with other models frequently used in practice. The application of the proposed framework is illustrated through two examples based on static and dynamic single-leg models, respectively. These illustrative examples are then benchmarked against several existing methods on a set of real-life network problems
