An IoT Cloud and Big Data Architecture for the Maintenance of Home Appliances
Billions of interconnected Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and devices
collect tremendous amounts of data from real-world scenarios. Big data is
generating increasing interest in a wide range of industries. Once data is
analyzed through compute-intensive Machine Learning (ML) methods, it can derive
critical business value for organizations. Powerfulplatforms are essential to
handle and process such massive collections of information cost-effectively and
conveniently. This work introduces a distributed and scalable platform
architecture that can be deployed for efficient real-world big data collection
and analytics. The proposed system was tested with a case study for Predictive
Maintenance of Home Appliances, where current and vibration sensors with high
acquisition frequency were connected to washing machines and refrigerators. The
introduced platform was used to collect, store, and analyze the data. The
experimental results demonstrated that the presented system could be
advantageous for tackling real-world IoT scenarios in a cost-effective and
local approach.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, IECON 202
Business Models for Internet of Things Platforms: Empirical Development of a Taxonomy and Archetypes
A wide range of Internet of Things platform providers operate diverse business models to cater for the manifold requirements of the IoT. This paper contributes to a more precise understanding of IoT platforms as an essential building block of the IoT based on the characteristics of its business models. Even though research listing technological dimensions according to which IoT platforms differ, they have neither been systematically derived nor been linked to the business model concept. In turn, they lack descriptive power on the heterogeneous value creation mechanisms of the platform providers. Within our research, we first analyzed 195 IoT platforms and systemically developed a taxonomy allowing the characterization of IoT platform business models. Second, based on this taxonomy, we identified nine archetypes of IoT platform business models and illustrated typical combinations of business model characteristics. Equipped with such an understanding, practice and research can analyze existing IoT platforms more accurately

New developments at the field of factory information systems and resource allocation solutions are constantly taken into practice within the field of manufacturing and production. Customers are turning their vision for more customized products and requesting further monitoring possibilities for the product itself, for its manufacturing and for its delivery. Similar paradigm change is taking place within the companiesâ departments and between the clusters of manufacturing stakeholders. Modern cloud based tools are providing the means for gaining these objectives.
Technology evolved from parallel, grid and distributed computing; at present cited as Cloud computing is one key future paradigm in factory and production automation. Regardless of the terminology still settling, in multiple occasions cloud computing is used term when referring to cloud services or cloud resources. Cloud technology is further-more understood as resources located outside individual entities premises. These resources are pieces of functionalities for gaining overall performance of the designed system and so worth such an architectural style is referred as Resource-Oriented Architecture (ROA). Most prominent connection method for combining the resources is a communication via REST (Representational State Transfer) based interfaces. When comping cloud resources with internet connected devices technology, Internet-of-Things (IoT) and furthermore IoT Dashboards for creating user interfaces, substantial benefits can be gained. These benefits include shorter lead-time for user interface development, process data gathering and production monitoring at higher abstract level.
This Masterâs Thesis takes a study for modern cloud computing resources and IoT Dashboards technologies for gaining process monitoring capabilities able to be used in the field of university research. During the thesis work, an alternative user group is kept in mind. Deploying similar methods for private production companies manufacturing environments. Additionally, field of Additive Manufacturing (AM) and one of its sub-category Direct Energy Deposition Method (DED) is detailed for gaining comprehension over the process monitoring needs, laying in the questioned manufacturing method. Finally, an implementation is developed for monitoring Tampere University of Technology Direct Energy Deposition method manufacturing environment research cell process both in real-time and gathering the process data for later reviewing. These functionalities are gained by harnessing cloud based infrastructures and resources

Energy-Aware Decentralised Medium Access Control for Wireless Sensor Networks
The success of future Internet-of-Things (IoT) based application deployments depends on the ability of wireless sensor platforms to sustain uninterrupted operation based on: (i) environmental energy harvesting and optimised coupling with the platformâs energy consumption when processing and transmitting/receiving data; (ii) spontaneous adaptation to changes in the local network topology without requiring central coordination. To address the first aspect, starting from practical deployments of a multi-transducer platform for photovoltaic and piezoelectric energy harvesting and the associated modelling and analysis, data-driven probability models are derived to facilitate the optimal coupling of energy production and consumption when processing and transmitting data. To address the second aspect (adaptability), the new concept of decentralised time-synchronised channel swapping (DT-SCS) is proposed â a novel protocol for the medium access control (MAC) layer of IEEE 802.15.4-based wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Simulation results reveal that DT-SCS comprises an excellent candidate for completely decentralised MAC layer coordination in WSNs by providing quick convergence to steady state, high bandwidth utilisation, high connectivity, robustness to interference and low energy consumption. Moreover, performance results via a Contiki-OS based deployment on TelosB motes reveal that DT-SCS comprises an excellent candidate for a decentralised multichannel MAC layer
