Quadrature Phase-Domain ADPLL with Integrated On-line Amplitude Locked Loop Calibration for 5G Multi-band Applications
5th generation wireless systems (5G) have expanded frequency band coverage with the low-band 5G and mid-band 5G frequencies spanning 600 MHz to 4 GHz spectrum. This dissertation focuses on a microelectronic implementation of CMOS 65 nm design of an All-Digital Phase Lock Loop (ADPLL), which is a critical component for advanced 5G wireless transceivers. The ADPLL is designed to operate in the frequency bands of 600MHz-930MHz, 2.4GHz-2.8GHz and 3.4GHz-4.2GHz. Unique ADPLL sub-components include: 1) Digital Phase Frequency Detector, 2) Digital Loop Filter, 3) Channel Bank Select Circuit, and 4) Digital Control Oscillator. Integrated with the ADPLL is a 90-degree active RC-CR phase shifter with on-line amplitude locked loop (ALL) calibration to facilitate enhanced image rejection while mitigating the effects of fabrication process variations and component mismatch. A unique high-sensitivity high-speed dynamic voltage comparator is included as a key component of the active phase shifter/ALL calibration subsystem. 65nm CMOS technology circuit designs are included for the ADPLL and active phase shifter with simulation performance assessments. Phase noise results for 1 MHz offset with carrier frequencies of 600MHz, 2.4GHz, and 3.8GHz are -130, -122, and -116 dBc/Hz, respectively. Monte Carlo simulations to account for process variations/component mismatch show that the active phase shifter with ALL calibration maintains accurate quadrature phase outputs when operating within the frequency bands 600MHz-930MHz, 2.4GHz-2.8GHz and 3.4GHz-4.2GHz
15 GHz quadrature voltage controlled oscillator in 130 nm CMOS technology
This paper reports a 15 GHz quadrature voltage controlled oscillator (QVCO) designed in a 130 nm CMOS technology. The phase noise performance of the QVCO and of a phase locked loop (PLL) where the QVCO was inserted were compared with the literature and with telecom standards and commercial products for broadcast satellite applications
Multi-Loop-Ring-Oscillator Design and Analysis for Sub-Micron CMOS
Ring oscillators provide a central role in timing circuits for today?s mobile devices and desktop computers. Increased integration in these devices exacerbates switching noise on the supply, necessitating improved supply resilience. Furthermore, reduced voltage headroom in submicron technologies limits the number of stacked transistors available in a delay cell. Hence, conventional single-loop oscillators offer relatively few design options to achieve desired specifications, such as supply rejection. Existing state-of-the-art supply-rejection- enhancement methods include actively regulating the supply with an LDO, employing a fully differential or current-starved delay cell, using a hi-Z voltage-to-current converter, or compensating/calibrating the delay cell. Multiloop ring oscillators (MROs) offer an additional solution because by employing a more complex ring-connection structure and associated delay cell, the designer obtains an additional degree of freedom to meet the desired specifications.
Designing these more complex multiloop structures to start reliably and achieve the desired performance requires a systematic analysis procedure, which we attack on two fronts: (1) a generalized delay-cell viewpoint of the MRO structure to assist in both analysis and circuit layout, and (2) a survey of phase-noise analysis to provide a bank of methods to analyze MRO phase noise. We distill the salient phase-noise-analysis concepts/key equations previously developed to facilitate MRO and other non-conventional oscillator analysis. Furthermore, our proposed analysis framework demonstrates that all these methods boil down to obtaining three things: (1) noise modulation function (NMF), (2) noise transfer function (NTF), and (3) current-controlled-oscillator gain (KICO).
As a case study, we detail the design, analysis, and measurement of a proposed multiloop ring oscillator structure that provides improved power-supply isolation (more than 20dB increase in supply rejection over a conventional-oscillator control case fabricated on the same test chip). Applying our general multi-loop-oscillator framework to this proposed MRO circuit leads both to design-oriented expressions for the oscillation frequency and supply rejection as well as to an efficient layout technique facilitating cross-coupling for improved quadrature accuracy and systematic, substantially simplified layout effort

Architectures and Circuits Leveraging Injection-Locked Oscillators for Ultra-Low Voltage Clock Synthesis and Reference-less Receivers for Dense Chip-to-Chip Communications
High performance computing is critical for the needs of scientific discovery and economic competitiveness. An extreme-scale computing system at 1000x the performance of today’s petaflop machines will exhibit massive parallelism on multiple vertical fronts, from thousands of computational units on a single processor to thousands of processors in a single data center. To facilitate such a massively-parallel extreme-scale computing, a key challenge is power. The challenge is not power associated with base computation but rather the problem of transporting data from one chip to another at high enough rates. This thesis presents architectures and techniques to achieve low power and area footprint while achieving high data rates in a dense very-short reach (VSR) chip-to-chip (C2C) communication network. High-speed serial communication operating at ultra-low supplies improves the energy-efficiency and lowers the power envelop of a system doing an exaflop of loops. One focus area of this thesis is clock synthesis for such energy-efficient interconnect applications operating at high speeds and ultra-low supplies. A sub-integer clockfrequency synthesizer is presented that incorporates a multi-phase injection-locked ring-oscillator-based prescaler for operation at an ultra-low supply voltage of 0.5V, phase-switching based programmable division for sub-integer clock-frequency synthesis, and automatic calibration to ensure injection lock. A record speed of 9GHz has been demonstrated at 0.5V in 45nm SOI CMOS. It consumes 3.5mW of power at 9.12GHz and 0.052 of area, while showing an output phase noise of -100dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset and RMS jitter of 325fs; it achieves a net of -186.5 in a 45-nm SOI CMOS process. This thesis also describes a receiver with a reference-less clocking architecture for high-density VSR-C2C links. This architecture simplifies clock-tree planning in dense extreme-scaling computing environments and has high-bandwidth CDR to enable SSC for suppressing EMI and to mitigate TX jitter requirements. It features clock-less DFE and a high-bandwidth CDR based on master-slave ILOs for phase generation/rotation. The RX is implemented in 14nm CMOS and characterized at 19Gb/s. It is 1.5x faster that previous reference-less embedded-oscillator based designs with greater than 100MHz jitter tolerance bandwidth and recovers error-free data over VSR-C2C channels. It achieves a power-efficiency of 2.9pJ/b while recovering error-free data (BER 200MHz and the INL of the ILO-based phase-rotator (32- Steps/UI) is <1-LSB. Lastly, this thesis develops a time-domain delay-based modeling of injection locking to describe injection-locking phenomena in nonharmonic oscillators. The model is used to predict the locking bandwidth, and the locking dynamics of the locked oscillator. The model predictions are verified against simulations and measurements of a four-stage differential ring oscillator. The model is further used to predict the injection-locking behavior of a single-ended CMOS inverter based ring oscillator, the lock range of a multi-phase injection-locked ring-oscillator-based prescaler, as well as the dynamics of tracking injection phase perturbations in injection-locked masterslave oscillators; demonstrating its versatility in application to any nonharmonic oscillator
Design of Digital Frequency Synthesizer for 5G SDR Systems
The previous frequency synthesizer techniques for scalable SDR are not compatible with high end applications due to its complex computations and the intolerance over increased path interference rate which leads to an unsatisfied performance with improved user rate in real time environment. Designing an efficient frequency synthesizer framework in the SDR system is essential for 5G wireless communication systems with improved Quality of service (QoS). Consequently, this research has been performed based on the merits of fully digitalized frequency synthesizer and its explosion in wide range of frequency band generations. In this paper hardware optimized reconfigurable digital base band processing and frequency synthesizer model is proposed without making any design complexity trade-off to deal with the multiple standards. Here fully digitalized frequency synthesizer is introduced using simplified delay units to reduce the design complexity. Experimental results and comparative analyzes are carried out to validate the performance metrics and exhaustive test bench simulation is also carried out to verify the functionality

Receiver Front-Ends in CMOS with Ultra-Low Power Consumption
Historically, research on radio communication has focused on improving range and data rate. In the last decade, however, there has been an increasing demand for low power and low cost radios that can provide connectivity with small devices around us. They should be able to offer basic connectivity with a power consumption low enough to function extended periods of time on a single battery charge, or even energy scavenged from the surroundings. This work is focused on the design of ultra-low power receiver front-ends intended for a receiver operating in the 2.4GHz ISM band, having an active power consumption of 1mW and chip area of 1mm². Low power consumption and small size make it hard to achieve good sensitivity and tolerance to interference. This thesis starts with an introduction to the overall receiver specifications, low power radio and radio standards, front-end and LO generation architectures and building blocks, followed by the four included papers. Paper I demonstrates an inductorless front-end operating at 915MHz, including a frequency divider for quadrature LO generation. An LO generator operating at 2.4GHz is shown in Paper II, enabling a front-end operating above 2GHz. Papers III and IV contain circuits with combined front-end and LO generator operating at or above the full 2.45GHz target frequency. They use VCO and frequency divider topologies that offer efficient operation and low quadrature error. An efficient passive-mixer design with improved suppression of interference, enables an LNA-less design in Paper IV capable of operating without a SAW-filter
Low-Overhead Built-In Self-Test for Advanced RF Transceiver Architectures
abstract: Due to high level of integration in RF System on Chip (SOC), the test access points are limited to the baseband and RF inputs/outputs of the system. This limited access poses a big challenge particularly for advanced RF architectures where calibration of internal parameters is necessary and ensure proper operation. Therefore low-overhead built-in Self-Test (BIST) solution for advanced RF transceiver is proposed. In this dissertation. Firstly, comprehensive BIST solution for RF polar transceivers using on-chip resources is presented. In the receiver, phase and gain mismatches degrade sensitivity and error vector magnitude (EVM). In the transmitter, delay skew between the envelope and phase signals and the finite envelope bandwidth can create intermodulation distortion (IMD) that leads to violation of spectral mask requirements. Characterization and calibration of these parameters with analytical model would reduce the test time and cost considerably. Hence, a technique to measure and calibrate impairments of the polar transceiver in the loop-back mode is proposed.
Secondly, robust amplitude measurement technique for RF BIST application and BIST circuits for loop-back connection are discussed. Test techniques using analytical model are explained and BIST circuits are introduced.
Next, a self-compensating built-in self-test solution for RF Phased Array Mismatch is proposed. In the proposed method, a sinusoidal test signal with unknown amplitude is applied to the inputs of two adjacent phased array elements and measure the baseband output signal after down-conversion. Mathematical modeling of the circuit impairments and phased array behavior indicates that by using two distinct input amplitudes, both of which can remain unknown, it is possible to measure the important parameters of the phased array, such as gain and phase mismatch. In addition, proposed BIST system is designed and fabricated using IBM 180nm process and a prototype four-element phased-array PCB is also designed and fabricated for verifying the proposed method.
Finally, process independent gain measurement via BIST/DUT co-design is explained. Design methodology how to reduce performance impact significantly is discussed.
