    Locked Polyomino Tilings

    A locked tt-omino tiling is a grid tiling by tt-ominoes such that, if you remove any pair of tiles, the only way to fill in the remaining 2t2t grid cells with tt-ominoes is to use the same two tiles in the exact same configuration as before. We exclude degenerate cases where there is only one tiling overall due to small dimensions. It is a classic (and straightforward) result that finite grids do not admit locked 2-omino tilings. In this paper, we construct explicit locked tt-omino tilings for t≥3t \geq 3 on grids of various dimensions. Most notably, we show that locked 3- and 4-omino tilings exist on finite square grids of arbitrarily large size, and locked tt-omino tilings of the infinite grid exist for arbitrarily large tt. The result for 4-omino tilings in particular is remarkable because they are so rare and difficult to construct: Only a single tiling is known to exist on any grid up to size 40×4040 \times 40. Locked tt-omino tilings arise as obstructions to widely used political redistricting algorithms in a model of redistricting where the underlying census geography is a grid graph. Most prominent is the ReCom Markov chain, which takes a random walk on the space of redistricting plans by iteratively merging and splitting pairs of districts (tiles) at a time. Locked tt-omino tilings are isolated states in the state space of ReCom. The constructions in this paper are counterexamples to the meta-conjecture that ReCom is irreducible on graphs of practical interest

    Parameterized Complexity of Directed Spanner Problems

    We initiate the parameterized complexity study of minimum t-spanner problems on directed graphs. For a positive integer t, a multiplicative t-spanner of a (directed) graph G is a spanning subgraph H such that the distance between any two vertices in H is at most t times the distance between these vertices in G, that is, H keeps the distances in G up to the distortion (or stretch) factor t. An additive t-spanner is defined as a spanning subgraph that keeps the distances up to the additive distortion parameter t, that is, the distances in H and G differ by at most t. The task of Directed Multiplicative Spanner is, given a directed graph G with m arcs and positive integers t and k, decide whether G has a multiplicative t-spanner with at most m-k arcs. Similarly, Directed Additive Spanner asks whether G has an additive t-spanner with at most m-k arcs. We show that - Directed Multiplicative Spanner admits a polynomial kernel of size ?(k?t?) and can be solved in randomized (4t)^k? n^?(1) time, - Directed Additive Spanner is W[1]-hard when parameterized by k even if t = 1 and the input graphs are restricted to be directed acyclic graphs. The latter claim contrasts with the recent result of Kobayashi from STACS 2020 that the problem for undirected graphs is FPT when parameterized by t and k

    Reliable Hubs for Partially-Dynamic All-Pairs Shortest Paths in Directed Graphs

    We give new partially-dynamic algorithms for the all-pairs shortest paths problem in weighted directed graphs. Most importantly, we give a new deterministic incremental algorithm for the problem that handles updates in O~(mn^(4/3) log{W}/epsilon) total time (where the edge weights are from [1,W]) and explicitly maintains a (1+epsilon)-approximate distance matrix. For a fixed epsilon>0, this is the first deterministic partially dynamic algorithm for all-pairs shortest paths in directed graphs, whose update time is o(n^2) regardless of the number of edges. Furthermore, we also show how to improve the state-of-the-art partially dynamic randomized algorithms for all-pairs shortest paths [Baswana et al. STOC\u2702, Bernstein STOC\u2713] from Monte Carlo randomized to Las Vegas randomized without increasing the running time bounds (with respect to the O~(*) notation). Our results are obtained by giving new algorithms for the problem of dynamically maintaining hubs, that is a set of O~(n/d) vertices which hit a shortest path between each pair of vertices, provided it has hop-length Omega(d). We give new subquadratic deterministic and Las Vegas algorithms for maintenance of hubs under either edge insertions or deletions

    Adaptive learning of compressible strings

    Suppose an oracle knows a string S that is unknown to us and that we want to determine. The oracle can answer queries of the form "Is s a substring of S?". In 1995, Skiena and Sundaram showed that, in the worst case, any algorithm needs to ask the oracle Sigma n/4 - O(n) queries in order to be able to reconstruct the hidden string, where Sigma is the size of the alphabet of S and n its length, and gave an algorithm that spends (Sigma - 1)n + O(Sigma root n) queries to reconstruct S. The main contribution of our paper is to improve the above upper-bound in the context where the string is compressible. We first present a universal algorithm that, given a (computable) compressor that compresses the string to Tau bits, performs q = O(Tau) substring queries; this algorithm, however, runs in exponential time. For this reason, the second part of the paper focuses on more time-efficient algorithms whose number of queries is bounded by specific compressibility measures. We first show that any string of length n over an integer alphabet of size Sigma with rle runs can be reconstructed with q = O(rle(Sigma + log nrle)) substring queries in linear time and space. We then present an algorithm that spends q is an element of O (Sigma g log n) substring queries and runs in O (n(logn + log Sigma) + q) time using linear space, where g is the size of a smallest straight-line program generating the string.     Hard Problems on Random Graphs

    Many graph properties are expressible in first order logic. Whether a graph contains a clique or a dominating set of size k are two examples. For the solution size as its parameter the first one is W[1]-complete and the second one W[2]-complete meaning that both of them are hard problems in the worst-case. If we look at both problem from the aspect of average-case complexity, the picture changes. Clique can be solved in expected FPT time on uniformly distributed graphs of size n, while this is not clear for Dominating Set. We show that it is indeed unlikely that Dominating Set can be solved efficiently on random graphs: If yes, then every first-order expressible graph property can be solved in expected FPT time, too. Furthermore, this remains true when we consider random graphs with an arbitrary constant edge probability. We identify a very simple problem on random matrices that is equally hard to solve on average: Given a square boolean matrix, are there k rows whose logical AND is the zero vector? The related Even Set problem on the other hand turns out to be efficiently solvable on random instances, while it is known to be hard in the worst-case

    Near-Linear Time Algorithm for n-fold ILPs via Color Coding

    We study an important case of ILPs max {c^Tx | Ax = b, l <= x <= u, x in Z^{n t}} with n * t variables and lower and upper bounds l, u in Z^{nt}. In n-fold ILPs non-zero entries only appear in the first r rows of the matrix A and in small blocks of size s x t along the diagonal underneath. Despite this restriction many optimization problems can be expressed in this form. It is known that n-fold ILPs can be solved in FPT time regarding the parameters s, r, and Delta, where Delta is the greatest absolute value of an entry in A. The state-of-the-art technique is a local search algorithm that subsequently moves in an improving direction. Both, the number of iterations and the search for such an improving direction take time Omega(n), leading to a quadratic running time in n. We introduce a technique based on Color Coding, which allows us to compute these improving directions in logarithmic time after a single initialization step. This leads to the first algorithm for n-fold ILPs with a running time that is near-linear in the number nt of variables, namely (rs Delta)^{O(r^2s + s^2)} L^2 * nt log^{O(1)}(nt), where L is the encoding length of the largest integer in the input. In contrast to the algorithms in recent literature, we do not need to solve the LP relaxation in order to handle unbounded variables. Instead, we give a structural lemma to introduce appropriate bounds. If, on the other hand, we are given such an LP solution, the running time can be decreased by a factor of L

    Grundy Coloring & Friends, Half-Graphs, Bicliques

    The first-fit coloring is a heuristic that assigns to each vertex, arriving in a specified order ?, the smallest available color. The problem Grundy Coloring asks how many colors are needed for the most adversarial vertex ordering ?, i.e., the maximum number of colors that the first-fit coloring requires over all possible vertex orderings. Since its inception by Grundy in 1939, Grundy Coloring has been examined for its structural and algorithmic aspects. A brute-force f(k)n^{2^{k-1}}-time algorithm for Grundy Coloring on general graphs is not difficult to obtain, where k is the number of colors required by the most adversarial vertex ordering. It was asked several times whether the dependency on k in the exponent of n can be avoided or reduced, and its answer seemed elusive until now. We prove that Grundy Coloring is W[1]-hard and the brute-force algorithm is essentially optimal under the Exponential Time Hypothesis, thus settling this question by the negative. The key ingredient in our W[1]-hardness proof is to use so-called half-graphs as a building block to transmit a color from one vertex to another. Leveraging the half-graphs, we also prove that b-Chromatic Core is W[1]-hard, whose parameterized complexity was posed as an open question by Panolan et al. [JCSS \u2717]. A natural follow-up question is, how the parameterized complexity changes in the absence of (large) half-graphs. We establish fixed-parameter tractability on K_{t,t}-free graphs for b-Chromatic Core and Partial Grundy Coloring, making a step toward answering this question. The key combinatorial lemma underlying the tractability result might be of independent interest

    A Sub-Exponential FPT Algorithm and a Polynomial Kernel for Minimum Directed Bisection on Semicomplete Digraphs

    Given an n-vertex digraph D and a non-negative integer k, the Minimum Directed Bisection problem asks if the vertices of D can be partitioned into two parts, say L and R, such that |L| and |R| differ by at most 1 and the number of arcs from R to L is at most k. This problem, in general, is W-hard as it is known to be NP-hard even when k=0. We investigate the parameterized complexity of this problem on semicomplete digraphs. We show that Minimum Directed Bisection on semicomplete digraphs is one of a handful of problems that admit sub-exponential time fixed-parameter tractable algorithms. That is, we show that the problem admits a 2^{O(sqrt{k} log k)}n^{O(1)} time algorithm on semicomplete digraphs. We also show that Minimum Directed Bisection admits a polynomial kernel on semicomplete digraphs. To design the kernel, we use (n,k,k^2)-splitters. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time such pseudorandom objects have been used in the design of kernels. We believe that the framework of designing kernels using splitters could be applied to more problems that admit sub-exponential time algorithms via chromatic coding. To complement the above mentioned results, we prove that Minimum Directed Bisection is NP-hard on semicomplete digraphs, but polynomial time solvable on tournaments

    On the Multilinear Complexity of Associative Algebras

    Christandl and Zuiddam [Matthias Christandl and Jeroen Zuiddam, 2019] study the multilinear complexity of d-fold matrix multiplication in the context of quantum communication complexity. Bshouty [Nader H. Bshouty, 2013] investigates the multilinear complexity of d-fold multiplication in commutative algebras to understand the size of so-called testers. The study of bilinear complexity is a classical topic in algebraic complexity theory, starting with the work by Strassen. However, there has been no systematic study of the multilinear complexity of multilinear maps. In the present work, we systematically investigate the multilinear complexity of d-fold multiplication in arbitrary associative algebras. We prove a multilinear generalization of the famous Alder-Strassen theorem, which is a lower bound for the bilinear complexity of the (2-fold) multiplication in an associative algebra. We show that the multilinear complexity of the d-fold multiplication has a lower bound of d ? dim A - (d-1)t, where t is the number of maximal twosided ideals in A. This is optimal in the sense that there are algebras for which this lower bound is tight. Furthermore, we prove the following dichotomy that the quotient algebra A/rad A determines the complexity of the d-fold multiplication in A: When the semisimple algebra A/rad A is commutative, then the multilinear complexity of the d-fold multiplication in A is polynomial in d.
