    Get PDF
This library uses the Dewey Decimal Classification scheme (DDC) to arrange books and other library materials on the shelves for easy retrieval. It is used in many libraries and allows items about the same subject to be shelved together. This is a guide to the numbers used and what they represent

UNESCO Thesaurus to DDC Mappings : Third Summary – Thousand Sections [HILT Phase III]

    Get PDF
This brief report explores the feasibility and cost of performing mappings between two knowledge organization systems (KOS) for the purposes of the High-level Thesaurus (HILT) project (phase III), which is exploring suitable architectures for machine-to-machine (M2M) terminology services. KOS-to-KOS mappings between the UNESCO Thesaurus and the ‘thousand sections’ of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) are considered

Toward a Model of Intercultural Warrant: A Case of the Korean Decimal Classification\u27s Cross-cultural Adaptation of the Dewey Decimal Classification

    Get PDF
I examined the Korean Decimal Classification (KDC)\u27s adaptation of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) by comparing the two systems. This case manifests the sociocultural influences on KOSs in a cross-cultural context. I focused my analysis on the changes resulting from the meeting of the two cultures, answering the main research question: “How does KDC adapt DDC in terms of underlying sociocultural perspectives in a classificatory form?” I took a comparative approach and address the main research question in two phases. In Phase 1, quantities of class numbers were analyzed by edition and discipline. The main class with the most consistently high number of class numbers in DDC was the social sciences, while the main class with the most consistently high number of class numbers in KDC was technology. The two main classes are expected to differ in semantic contents or specificities. In Phase 2, patterns of adaptations were analyzed by examining the class numbers, captions, and hierarchical relations within the developed adaptation taxonomy. Implementing the taxonomy as a coding scheme brings two comparative features of classifications: 1) semantic contents determined by captions and quantity of subordinate numbers; and 2) structural arrangement determined by ranks, the broader category, presence and the order of subordinate numbers. Surveying proper forms of adaptation resulted in the development of an adaptation taxonomy that will serve as a framework to account for the conflicts between and harmonization of multiple social and cultural influences in knowledge structures. This study has ramifications in theoretical and empirical foundations for the development of “intercultural warrant” in KOSs

Technical Processing of University Library: A Theoretical Study

    Get PDF
Technical services operations comprise of ordering, claiming and receipt of materials, cataloging and classification of materials; and serials control. Beside these, other technical services operations contain circulation, documents, foreign language and special collections, and bibliographic instruction in technical services areas. This leads me to believe that the distinction between technical services and public or reader services in individual libraries is based on custom and tradition arising out of incidental circumstances, rather than on fundamental principle. In this article, I tried to provide some basic aspect regarding technical processing which help in maintaining the library bitterly. In this article, I include basic aspect of acquisition, classification, cataloguing and information retrieval. Beside this I tried to focus on library management software which is most important for technical processing now a day

Physical verification as administrative and collection evaluation tool: A study ofInstitute of Agriculture Library; Visva-Bharati

    Get PDF
This article is the result of an intensive stock verification of more than 50000 documents of an academic library(Institute of Agriculture; Visva-Bharati) established in 1957. The physical verification process includes physical noting of all accession number of books on and out of stack and use of LibSys software to generate reports. The paper highlights that physical verification of collection can help in identifying major areas of loss and thereby can help in framing administrative guideline for collection evaluation and management policy. The paper also urges for review of existing government rules regarding the loss of books and weed-out policy

The Dewey decimal classification system is continuously revised to keep pace with knowledge. This means accommodating new topics, as well as revising the old one. Today the Dewey decimal classification has undergone 22 revisions to keep itself abreast of the ever advancing frontiers of knowledge and to cater the increasing demand of its users Edition 23. It is regularly (quarterly) to cope up with the pace of increasing universe of knowledge. This article has been made discussion about the modification revised version of 23 DDC edition and its features, updates and subscription information etc

The Open Archives Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) allows sharing metadata serving to describe arbitrary objects with others. In addition to a short overview of the protocol the paper on hand contains recommendations for the application of Sets by German data providers and for the proper usage of the metadata elements of Dublin Core (DC). Thereby the target is pursued to ensure an efficient metadata exchange between the different users of the OAI protocol
