    A Generalized TDoA/ToA Model for ToF Positioning

    Many applications require positioning. Time of Flight (ToF) methods calculate distances by measuring the propagation time of signals. We present a novel ToF localization method. Our new approach works infrastructure-less, without pre-defined roles like Anchors or Tags. It generalizes existing synchronization-less Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) and Time of Arrival (ToA) algorithms. We show how known algorithms can be derived from our new method. A major advantage of our approach is that it provides a comparable or better clock error robustness, i.e. the typical errors of crystal oscillators have negligible impact for TDoA and ToA measurements.     The IPIN 2019 Indoor Localisation Competition - Description and Results

    IPIN 2019 Competition, sixth in a series of IPIN competitions, was held at the CNR Research Area of Pisa (IT), integrated into the program of the IPIN 2019 Conference. It included two on-site real-time Tracks and three off-site Tracks. The four Tracks presented in this paper were set in the same environment, made of two buildings close together for a total usable area of 1000 m 2 outdoors and and 6000 m 2 indoors over three floors, with a total path length exceeding 500 m. IPIN competitions, based on the EvAAL framework, have aimed at comparing the accuracy performance of personal positioning systems in fair and realistic conditions: past editions of the competition were carried in big conference settings, university campuses and a shopping mall. Positioning accuracy is computed while the person carrying the system under test walks at normal walking speed, uses lifts and goes up and down stairs or briefly stops at given points. Results presented here are a showcase of state-of-the-art systems tested side by side in real-world settings as part of the on-site real-time competition Tracks. Results for off-site Tracks allow a detailed and reproducible comparison of the most recent positioning and tracking algorithms in the same environment as the on-site Tracks

    An analysis of the properties and the performance of WiFi RTT for indoor positioning in non-line-of-sight environments

    Indoor positioning system based on WiFi Round-Trip Time (RTT) measurement is believed to deliver sub-metre level accuracy with trilateration, under ideal indoor conditions. However, the performance of WiFi RTT positioning in complex, non-line-of-sight environments re-mains a research challenge.To this end, this paper investigates the properties of WiFi RTT in several real-world indoor environments on heterogeneous smartphones. We present a large-scale real-world dataset containing both RTT and received signal strength (RSS) signal measures with correct ground-truth labels.Our results indicated that RTT fingerprinting system delivered an accuracy below 0.75 m which was 98% better than RSS fingerprinting and 166% better than RTT trilateration, which failed to deliver sub-metre accuracy as claimed

    A Survey of 3D Indoor Localization Systems and Technologies

    Indoor localization has recently and significantly attracted the interest of the research community mainly due to the fact that Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs) typically fail in indoor environments. In the last couple of decades, there have been several works reported in the literature that attempt to tackle the indoor localization problem. However, most of this work is focused solely on two-dimensional (2D) localization, while very few papers consider three dimensions (3D). There is also a noticeable lack of survey papers focusing on 3D indoor localization; hence, in this paper, we aim to carry out a survey and provide a detailed critical review of the current state of the art concerning 3D indoor localization including geometric approaches such as angle of arrival (AoA), time of arrival (ToA), time difference of arrival (TDoA), fingerprinting approaches based on Received Signal Strength (RSS), Channel State Information (CSI), Magnetic Field (MF) and Fine Time Measurement (FTM), as well as fusion-based and hybrid-positioning techniques. We provide a variety of technologies, with a focus on wireless technologies that may be utilized for 3D indoor localization such as WiFi, Bluetooth, UWB, mmWave, visible light and sound-based technologies. We critically analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each approach/technology in 3D localization

    Collection of a continuous long-term dataset for the evaluation of Wi-Fi-fingerprinting-based indoor positioning systems

    The dataset introduced in this paper is available in two versions: lite version https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6646008 (accessed on 28 July 2022) which considers Wi-Fi samples from each MD every 20 min, has a total of 382,852 Wi-Fi samples, thus making it easier to parse and analyse; full version https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6928554 (accessed on 29 July 2022) which has all collected samples, with a total of 7,446,538 Wi-Fi samples.Indoor positioning and navigation have been attracting interest from the research community for quite some time. Nowadays, new fields, such as the Internet of Things, Industry 4.0, and augmented reality, are increasing the demand for indoor positioning solutions capable of delivering specific positioning performances not only in simulation but also in the real world; hence, validation in real-world environments is essential. However, collecting real-world data is a time-consuming and costly endeavor, and many research teams lack the resources to perform experiments across different environments, which are required for high-quality validation. Publicly available datasets are a solution that provides the necessary resources to perform this type of validation and to promote research work reproducibility. Unfortunately, for different reasons, and despite some initiatives promoting data sharing, the number and diversity of datasets available are still very limited. In this paper, we introduce and describe a new public dataset which has the unique characteristic of being collected over a long period (2+ years), and it can be used for different Wi-Fi-based positioning studies.     Discovering location based services: A unified approach for heterogeneous indoor localization systems

    The technological solutions and communication capabilities offered by the Internet of Things paradigm, in terms of raising availability of wearable devices, the ubiquitous internet connection, and the presence on the market of service-oriented solutions, have allowed a wide proposal of Location Based Services (LBS). In a close future, we foresee that companies and service providers will have developed reliable solutions to address indoor positioning, as basis for useful location based services. These solutions will be different from each other and they will adopt different hardware and processing techniques. This paper describes the proposal of a unified approach for Indoor Localization Systems that enables the cooperation between heterogeneous solutions and their functional modules. To this end, we designed an integrated architecture that, abstracting its main components, allows a seamless interaction among them. Finally, we present a working prototype of such architecture, which is based on the popular Telegram application for Android, as an integration demonstrator. The integration of the three main phases –namely the discovery phase, the User Agent self-configuration, and the indoor map retrieval/rendering– demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed integrated architectur

    Evaluating indoor positioning systems in a shopping mall : the lessons learned from the IPIN 2018 competition

    The Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation (IPIN) conference holds an annual competition in which indoor localization systems from different research groups worldwide are evaluated empirically. The objective of this competition is to establish a systematic evaluation methodology with rigorous metrics both for real-time (on-site) and post-processing (off-site) situations, in a realistic environment unfamiliar to the prototype developers. For the IPIN 2018 conference, this competition was held on September 22nd, 2018, in Atlantis, a large shopping mall in Nantes (France). Four competition tracks (two on-site and two off-site) were designed. They consisted of several 1 km routes traversing several floors of the mall. Along these paths, 180 points were topographically surveyed with a 10 cm accuracy, to serve as ground truth landmarks, combining theodolite measurements, differential global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and 3D scanner systems. 34 teams effectively competed. The accuracy score corresponds to the third quartile (75th percentile) of an error metric that combines the horizontal positioning error and the floor detection. The best results for the on-site tracks showed an accuracy score of 11.70 m (Track 1) and 5.50 m (Track 2), while the best results for the off-site tracks showed an accuracy score of 0.90 m (Track 3) and 1.30 m (Track 4). These results showed that it is possible to obtain high accuracy indoor positioning solutions in large, realistic environments using wearable light-weight sensors without deploying any beacon. This paper describes the organization work of the tracks, analyzes the methodology used to quantify the results, reviews the lessons learned from the competition and discusses its future

    Optical boundaries for LED-based indoor positioning system

    Overlap of footprints of light emitting diodes (LEDs) increases the positioning accuracy of wearable LED indoor positioning systems (IPS) but such an approach assumes that the footprint boundaries are defined. In this work, we develop a mathematical model for defining the footprint boundaries of an LED in terms of a threshold angle instead of the conventional half or full angle. To show the effect of the threshold angle, we compare how overlaps and receiver tilts affect the performance of an LED-based IPS when the optical boundary is defined at the threshold angle and at the full angle. Using experimental measurements, simulations, and theoretical analysis, the effect of the defined threshold angle is estimated. The results show that the positional time when using the newly defined threshold angle is 12 times shorter than the time when the full angle is used. When the effect of tilt is considered, the threshold angle time is 22 times shorter than the full angle positioning time. Regarding accuracy, it is shown in this work that a positioning error as low as 230 mm can be obtained. Consequently, while the IPS gives a very low positioning error, a defined threshold angle reduces delays in an overlap-based LED IPS

    Visible Light Communications for Industrial Applications—Challenges and Potentials

    Visible Light Communication (VLC) is a short-range optical wireless communication technology that has been gaining attention due to its potential to offload heavy data traffic from the congested radio wireless spectrum. At the same time, wireless communications are becoming crucial to smart manufacturing within the scope of Industry 4.0. Industry 4.0 is a developing trend of high-speed data exchange in automation for manufacturing technologies and is referred to as the fourth industrial revolution. This trend requires fast, reliable, low-latency, and cost-effective data transmissions with fast synchronizations to ensure smooth operations for various processes. VLC is capable of providing reliable, low-latency, and secure connections that do not penetrate walls and is immune to electromagnetic interference. As such, this paper aims to show the potential of VLC for industrial wireless applications by examining the latest research work in VLC systems. This work also highlights and classifies challenges that might arise with the applicability of VLC and visible light positioning (VLP) systems in these settings. Given the previous work performed in these areas, and the major ongoing experimental projects looking into the use of VLC systems for industrial applications, the use of VLC and VLP systems for industrial applications shows promising potential
