    Warriors, allies or spectators: a look at stakeholders’ perception of the role of libraries and librarians in the fake news phenomenon

    The recent debate on fake news and critical thinking is invading the national and international scene. Strategies to counterfeit the phenomenon are issued everywhere: IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations) built a campaign around its infographic tool; at the same time, the Internet giants are beginning to change their attitude and position with respect to fake news as a result of public pressure – e.g. Facebook and the scandal of Cambridge Analytica. Libraries and librarians think they could play an important role, being their job about knowledge and information management, but does anyone else think along the same lines? An article published on Science with the explicit goal of starting a "science of fake news", advocated an interdisciplinary approach, yet hardly any reference was made to Library and Information studies. The same happened in the recent EU Public consultation on fake news and online disinformation - neither libraries nor schools were counted among the stakeholders. Someone may argue that news is outside the scope of the library mission; yet preserving documentation and helping people to find and evaluate information effectively definitely is: the actions undertaken by EBLIDA (European Bureau of Library, Information and Documentation) advocate for a role for libraries. Based on this scenario, the present paper will reflect on the concept of fake news in the light of library and information science – thus defining the field and its limits. Subsequently, it will analyse policy documents addressing the issue, to verify whether libraries and library studies are considered stakeholders by external observers. Method: documents on Fake News will be scanned looking for mentions of libraries on the websites of European Union, USA, Canada, Great Britain and Italy. An overall scan will also be carried out on the role of libraries in relation to fake news in research articles

    Survey of Special Collections and Archives in the United Kingdom and Ireland

    Special collections and archives play a key role in the future of research libraries. However, significant challenges face institutions that wish to capitalize on that value, to leverage and make fully available the rich content in special collections in order to support research, teaching, and community engagement.This report, produced in collaboration by OCLC Research and RLUK, builds on the foundation established by Taking Our Pulse: The OCLC Research Survey of Special Collections and Archives, a report published in 2010 that provides a rigorous, evidence-based appraisal of the state of special collections in the US and Canada. The survey provides both evidence and a basis for action as part of the RLUK's Unique and Distinctive Collections workstrand  and OCLC Research's Mobilizing Unique Materials theme.This report provides institutional leaders, curators, special collections staff, and archivists both evidence and inspiration to plan for much needed and deserved transformation of special collections. Specifically, it contains twenty recommendations that the authors feel will have a positive impact toward addressing the issues identified. It also provides a backdrop for continued discussion, both within special collections and the larger library enterprise, for the role of special collections in an evolved information economy. These key findings and recommendations are highlighted in the report's executive summary, which has been published as a separate document for your reading convenience.Key findings:The top challenges for archives and special collections in the UK and Ireland are outreach, born-digital materials and space.Alignment of special collections with institutional missions and priorities is an ongoing challenge.The special collections sector is undergoing a major culture shift that mandates significant retraining and careful examination of priorities.Philanthropic support is limited, as are librarians' fundraising skills.Use of all types of special collections material has increased across the board.Users expect everything in libraries and archives to be digitized.One-third of archival collections are not discoverable in online catalogs.Management of born-digital archival materials remains in its infancy

    This essay reviews recent developments in embedding data management and curation skills into information technology, library and information science, and research-based postgraduate courses in various national contexts. The essay also investigates means of joining up formal education with professional development training opportunities more coherently. The potential for using professional internships as a means of improving communication and understanding between disciplines is also explored. A key aim of this essay is to identify what level of complementarity is needed across various disciplines to most effectively and efficiently support the entire data curation lifecycle

    To initiate the Engagement work package in 4C, a baseline group of stakeholders was identified and an analysis of significant cost modelling and economics-related work in the field of digital curation has been carried out. Also, a small questionnaire has been sent to stakeholders in order to engage them in the project and to better understand their current state of practice in assessing digital curation costs. As such, this document reports on task 2.1 of the 4C project, i.e. Baseline study of stakeholders and initiatives on the domain of digital curation costs; and includes the results of the following subtasks: 1. A collection of relevant work on cost modelling activities in the context of digital curation; 2. An initial registry of stakeholder groups and contacts; 3.     Film-induced tourism-also referred to as Film Tourism- is a recent growing phenomenon whose main purpose is to explore the potential tourist’s motivations when planning their upcoming visit to a destination. Furthermore, this phenomenon gives power to the future filming locations in terms of creating new film heritage museums, film tours, developing new destination marketing and so on. Thus, we will study the brand new type of tourist: ‘Core Screen Tourist’. Core screen tourists are those who would not travel to a destination where a film has been shot unless they have seen it on screen previously. Films provide a powerful way to shape people's perceptions of the place, creating new and strengthening old ones.
