    Organic 6G Networks: Vision, Requirements, and Research Approaches

    Building upon the significant number of already published 6G position papers, we are concentrating on the immediate next steps toward turning the research vision of software-centric networks into reality. This is accomplished, by summarizing and assessing the various requirements documents and providing a significant number of specific research directions and approaches in order to fulfill them. This article complements the existing body of work, by focusing on future core networks and their infrastructures, yet maintaining a system-level perspective and progressing in the direction of scoping key technology elements and providing high-potential research approaches for them. Additionally, we rigorously discuss the impact that different technological advancements have on the other parts of the system, to provide a coherent, end-to-end network understanding. This is in strong contrast to current approaches, where from the challenges, each research direction becomes independent and, thus, its advances are potentially cancelled out by the next technology in the chain. By maintaining this system perspective, the adoption of the different technologies becomes easier, as they are developed in unison. To address the requirements in a coherent, holistic, and unified way, we extend our high-level architecture concept named “Organic 6G Networks” towards a comprehensive end-to-end system. A holistic software-centric system, adapting the latest software development advancements from the IT industry. The Organic 6G network provides support for building a streamlined software network architecture and offers the next step on the path towards the development and specification of future mobile networks

    An adaptive neuro-fuzzy propagation model for LoRaWAN

    This article proposes an adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) model for accurate estimation of signal propagation using LoRaWAN. By using ANFIS, the basic knowledge of propagation is embedded into the proposed model. This reduces the training complexity of artificial neural network (ANN)-based models. Therefore, the size of the training dataset is reduced by 70% compared to an ANN model. The proposed model consists of an efficient clustering method to identify the optimum number of the fuzzy nodes to avoid overfitting, and a hybrid training algorithm to train and optimize the ANFIS parameters. Finally, the proposed model is benchmarked with extensive practical data, where superior accuracy is achieved compared to deterministic models, and better generalization is attained compared to ANN models. The proposed model outperforms the nondeterministic models in terms of accuracy, has the flexibility to account for new modeling parameters, is easier to use as it does not require a model for propagation environment, is resistant to data collection inaccuracies and uncertain environmental information, has excellent generalization capability, and features a knowledge-based implementation that alleviates the training process.     Digital policy is a unique policy area. As a cross-cutting policy issue, it has an impact not only on individual areas of regulation but on almost all other policy areas as well. Aspects of digital policy such as data regimes, cybersecurity and standardization issues are relevant not only to the the future of the internet or 5G mobile communications infrastructure, but to other areas of our lives to which they are closely linked, which range from automated driving to digital assistance systems in education and healthcare to the digitalization of sectors such as agriculture and construction. Nevertheless, regulation efforts have thus far been primarily sector-specific and national in their scope. With a few exceptions, such as the EU’s controversial General Data Protection Regulation, there are few digital policy frameworks in place for Europe that defines and integrates basic principles for broad application. Instead, we face a situation in which a variety of approaches stand side by side, at times complementing each other but also – all too often – competing with each other in ways that foster inconsistencies. The development of Europe’s 5G infrastructure is illustrative of this state of affairs. Despite the presence of what were originally uniform objectives across Europe, 28 nationally distinct tendering procedures with different requirements have since emerged. As a result, we must now find ways to manage the problems associated with having three or more networks per country, high costs, a difficult debate over security and the threat of dependency on non-EU providers
