Of Love, Of Money, Of Unquestionable Practicality: The Choices of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Early Heroines

Between 1920-1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald explored the choices of young, affluent women, particularly in regards to marriage. His fascination with this topic began with Rosalind in This Side of Paradise, and her practical yet immature decision. Through his early short stories, Fitzgerald explores different motives behind his heroines’ decisions, varying points-of-view, and the consequences of his heroines’ actions. Fitzgerald’s fascination with these characters culminates in The Great Gatsby with his most complex characters and situations

    Popular resistance in Namibia, 1920-1925

African Studies Seminar series. Paper presented June, 1984The first five years of the South Africa mandate marked an important milestone in the development of resistance in Namibia. Between 1920 and 1925 resistance against colonial rule assumed a variety of forms unparallelled in Namibian history. The Bondelswarts rebelled in 1922 and the Rehoboth Basters, with their Herero, Damara and Nama allies, in 1925. Further smaller-scale outbursts of violence erupted in other parts of the territory, and rumours of a general black rising were rife amongst both black and white communities. Even the San, who were usually isolated from other black communities by their nomadic existence in marginal parts of the territory, resorted to stock theft and banditry on an unusual scale, becoming embroiled in skirmishes with the police and administrative officials. This period also saw the introduction of new forms of political organisation that transcended pre-colonial divisions and began laying a basis for national unity. Among the organisations that were established during this period were the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), the Industrial and Commercial Workers' Union (ICU), the African People's Organisation (APO) and the South West Africa National Congress (SWANC). In particular, UNIA with its pan-Africanist platform proved remarkably successful, spreading from the industrial centre of Luderitz to other urban centres, and then to the countryside. The resistance movements of this phase of Namibian history have thus far received little attention from researchers. The few studies of resistance during this period have concentrated almost exclusively on the two rebellions and, for the most part, treat these outbursts as discrete episodes unconnected with other manifestations of protest. Very little has been written about the various political organizations that came into being during this period, and where these are mentioned, it is usually in the context of urban centres such as Luderitz and Widhoek. Some of the most striking features of this period such as the diversity and scale of popular involvement and the rich network of relationships connecting the different strands of protest, have therefore gone largely unnoticed

During the  Holodomor of  1921–1923 the  Committee supported scientists, higher education establishments’ professors as well as the artists in the biggest scientific centre — Kyiv. Financial conditions of  scientists and artists were critical. This situation was used by  the regime to  control intellectuals. It transferred from  leading social force, which was determining a  direction and establishing of the Ukrainian state and was developing the culture, to ideologically and financially marginal social group. The subject matter of this article is to study the forms and methods of the All-Ukrainian Committee’s support to  Kyiv intellectuals in  the first half of  1920s. The  archive of  the All-Ukrainian Committee of  Assistance to Scientists provides us with the opportunity to reveal insights on this issue. In the condition of whole-food and essential tools deficiency, which was in the USSR and, in particular,in Kyiv in  1921–1923, scientists were sufficiently unprotected. It provided the  state with  a  possibility to  use budget financing / underfunding to influence intellectuals loyalty (in particular, scientists and artists). The part of this support as well as leverage over the intellectuals means accommodation, sanitation, financial aid, food aid (food ration for academics), support to families of the dead

Hidden Trends in 90 Years of Harvard Business Review

In this paper, we demonstrate and discuss results of our mining the abstracts of the publications in Harvard Business Review between 1922 and 2012. Techniques for computing n-grams, collocations, basic sentiment analysis, and named-entity recognition were employed to uncover trends hidden in the abstracts. We present findings about international relationships, sentiment in HBR's abstracts, important international companies, influential technological inventions, renown researchers in management theories, US presidents via chronological analyses.Comment: 6 pages, 14 figures, Proceedings of 2012 International Conference on Technologies and Applications of Artificial Intelligenc
