Prevention of Problem Gambling: A Comprehensive Review of the Evidence and Identified Best Practices

    Get PDF
The past 15 years has seen a considerable amount of interest and effort being put into developing strategies to prevent problem gambling. Unfortunately, the development, implementation, and evaluation of most of these initiatives has been a haphazard process. Most have been put in place because they ‘seemed like good ideas’ and/or were being used in other jurisdictions, rather than having demonstrated scientific efficacy or being derived from a good understanding of effective practices in prevention. The primary purpose of the present document is to help change this state of affairs. More specifically, by: Proposing an etiological framework for understanding how problem gambling develops based on the available evidence and drawing from established models of addictive behaviour. Comprehensively evaluating the effectiveness of the various initiatives that have been used around the world to prevent problem gambling based on their demonstrated efficacy and/or their similarity to initiatives that are empirically effective in preventing other addictive behaviour. Based on this etiological framework and this critical review of the research, identifying current ‘best practices’ for the prevention of problem gambling.Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre and the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Car

ECOLOGY AND IMPACTS OF COYOTES (CANIS LATRANS) IN THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES

    Get PDF
Recent coyote (Canis latrans ) colonization of the southeastern United States has prompted speculation on the top-down effects of a new top predator on systems which have gone without a strong predator presence since the extirpation of the red wolf (Canis rufus ). This dissertation reports on the results of a series of investigations of the potential impact of coyotes on raccoons (Procyon lotor ) and other management issues related to coyotes in the Southeast. Chapters 1-3 present indirect field tests of the Mesopredator Release Hypothesis. Chapter 4 presents an overview of the current knowledge of the ecology and potential impacts of coyotes in the Southeast

    Extracting and Cleaning RDF Data

The RDF data model has become a prevalent format to represent heterogeneous data because of its versatility. The capability of dismantling information from its native formats and representing it in triple format offers a simple yet powerful way of modelling data that is obtained from multiple sources. In addition, the triple format and schema constraints of the RDF model make the RDF data easy to process as labeled, directed graphs. This graph representation of RDF data supports higher-level analytics by enabling querying using different techniques and querying languages, e.g., SPARQL. Anlaytics that require structured data are supported by transforming the graph data on-the-fly to populate the target schema that is needed for downstream analysis. These target schemas are defined by downstream applications according to their information need. The flexibility of RDF data brings two main challenges. First, the extraction of RDF data is a complex task that may involve domain expertise about the information required to be extracted for different applications. Another significant aspect of analyzing RDF data is its quality, which depends on multiple factors including the reliability of data sources and the accuracy of the extraction systems. The quality of the analysis depends mainly on the quality of the underlying data. Therefore, evaluating and improving the quality of RDF data has a direct effect on the correctness of downstream analytics. This work presents multiple approaches related to the extraction and quality evaluation of RDF data. To cope with the large amounts of data that needs to be extracted, we present DSTLR, a scalable framework to extract RDF triples from semi-structured and unstructured data sources. For rare entities that fall on the long tail of information, there may not be enough signals to support high-confidence extraction. Towards this problem, we present an approach to estimate property values for long tail entities. We also present multiple algorithms and approaches that focus on the quality of RDF data. These include discovering quality constraints from RDF data, and utilizing machine learning techniques to repair errors in RDF data

23 pages, 26 figures, 3 tablesThis Collective Article presents information on 22 species belonging to 5 Phyla, arranged geographically from west to east. The new records were found in 8 countries as follows: Spain: first record of the two scarcely known nemerteans Baseodiscus delineatus and Notospermus geniculatus in Formentera; Malta: second record of the alien fish Lagocephalus sceleratus; Italy: the alien polychaete Syllis pectinans and the isopod Paranthura japonica, as well as the cryptogenic opisthobranch Anteaeolidiella lurana, were found in the fouling assemblages along the docks of the port of Livorno. New decapod records are reported from Sicily (the alien Callinectes sapidus and the native Pachygrapsus maurus) and Apulia (Percnon gibbesi and Procambarus clarkii); the lesser amberjack Seriola fasciata extended its geographical range to the Egadi Isands and Siganus luridus was documented for the first time along the Ionian coasts of Apulia and Calabria. Slovenia: the first record of the alien bivalve Brachidontes pharaonis is reported, together with a survey of up to date Adriatic records. Greece: the first record of the gastropod Rhinoclavis kochi is reported from Gavdos island. In addition, two records of endangered and rare cartilaginous fish were reported, namely, the shark Hexanchus griseus and the ray Leucoraja fullonica, as well as additional records of Siganus luridus for Lesvos and Malleus regula and Fulvia fragilis from Astypalaia. Turkey: the black wing flyingfish Hirundichthys rondeletii is reported for the very first time from the Black Sea. Egypt: the Indo-Pacific crab Halimede ochtodes is reported as established in Port Said. In addition, biometric parameters and meristic counts are reported for Anthias anthias in Damietta. Cyprus: the alien opisthobranch gastropod BursatellaPeer Reviewe
