    Slip dislocation and twin nucleation mechanisms in hcp metals

The mechanism is based on the results of atomistic computer simulations. It was found that under high shear stress applied on {101¯1} plane (the stress level is about 7 % of shear modulus), the core of a slip dislocation can transform to a twin embryo. The transformation and subsequent twin growth are accompanied by nucleation and migration of interfacial defects including disconnections and stacking faults.     A Calibrated Time Domain Envelope Measurement System for the Behavioral Modeling of Power Amplifiers

    This paper presents a set-up which enables the generation and the calibrated time domain measurements of complex envelopes of modulated signals at both ports of non linear microwave power amplifiers. The architecture of the characterization tool is given. Examples of error corrected time domain envelopes at the input / output RF ports of a 36 dBm output power – 30dB power gain L-band SSPA are shown. Futhermore, the use of this characterization tool and a suitable processing of measurement data are applied to a novel measurement based behavioral modeling approach of non linear devices accounting for memory effects

    Application of response surface methodology to stiffened panel optimization

    In a multilevel optimization frame, the use of surrogate models to approximate optimization constraints allows great time saving. Among available metamodelling techniques we chose to use Neural Networks to perform regression of static mechanical criteria, namely buckling and collapse reserve factors of a stiffened panel, which are constraints of our subsystem optimization problem. Due to the highly non linear behaviour of these functions with respect to loading and design variables, we encountered some difficulties to obtain an approximation of sufficient quality on the whole design space. In particular, variations of the approximated function can be very different according to the value of loading variables. We show how a prior knowledge of the influence of the variables allows us to build an efficient Mixture of Expert model, leading to a good approximation of constraints. Optimization benchmark processes are computed to measure time saving, effects on optimum feasibility and objective value due to the use of the surrogate models as constraints. Finally we see that, while efficient, this mixture of expert model could be still improved by some additional learning techniques

    Pacific herring, Clupea pallasi, studies and fishery management in Tomales Bay 1992-93, with notes on Humboldt Bay and Crescent City area landings

    The 1992-93 spawning biomass estimate for Pacific herring, Clupea pallasi, in Tomales Bay increased for the fourth year in a row to 4,078 tons. This is the highest estimate since the 1986-87 season. The December spawning biomass total of 1,346 tons was the second highest December escapement total since surveys began in 1972-73. A total of 3.58 million m2 of eelgrass, Zostera marina, was measured in Tomales Bay this season. Eelgrass density increased in the majority of beds. The commercial catch of 222 tons was taken entirely from Tomales Bay since outer Bodega Bay was closed to herring fishing during the season. Gill net mesh size was increased to 2.125 inches from 2.0 inches this season. Herring aged 4,5, and 6 comprised 92% by number of the season's herring catch. Mean weight of herring for each age decreased while mean length for all ages combined increased slightly. Tomales Bay herring samples indicated that older year-classes, missing in commercial catch samples, were present prior to the January start of the commercial fishery. The abundance of 4-yr-old herring was low in samples from variable-mesh and commercial gill nets, indicating less than average recruitment of the 1989 year-class. In Humboldt Bay the 1992-93 season commercial herring catch totalled 28.6 tons, less than half of the 60-ton quota. Crescent City area herring fishermen nearly caught their 30-ton quota with a total of 28.5 tons landed. No spawning biomass estimate is available for the 1992-93 season for either area. (29pp.

    Making it real: information literacy and student engagement

    In recent years Irish universities have expanded and diversified in response to a changing external environment. A key factor in this change is the increasing acceptance of the importance of lifelong learning. This drive to produce quality graduates, who can compete in a national and global market, combined with a parallel a shift in the approach to teaching and learning within higher education means that the library and its resources are becoming fundamental components of the teaching and learning process. This paper will share innovative practices currently taking place in both Dublin City University (DCU) and University College Dublin (UCD) and discuss their impact on learning outcomes; it will include feedback received from academic staff and students. This paper presents innovative ways that identify the information skills (IS) needed to meet the module learning objectives at all levels. It suggests ways IS can be delivered in a more quantifiable, coordinated, and planned way that can be incorporated - in a practical and effective way – into module assessment

    Exploring concepts of health with male prisoners in three category-C English prisons

    Lay understandings of health and illness have a well established track record and a plethora of research now exists which has examined these issues. However, there is a dearth of research which has examined the perspectives of those who are imprisoned. This paper attempts to address this research gap. The paper is timely given that calls have been made to examine lay perspectives in different geographical locations and a need to re-examine health promotion approaches in prison settings. Qualitative data from thirty-six male sentenced prisoners from three prisons in England were collected. The data was analysed in accordance with Attride-Stirling's (2001) thematic network approach. Although the men's perceptions of health were broadly similar to the general population, some interesting findings emerged which were directly related to prison life and its associated structures. These included access to the outdoors and time out of their prison cell, as well as maintaining relationships with family members through visits. The paper proposes that prisoners' lay views should be given higher priority given that prison health has traditionally been associated with medical treatment and the bio-medical paradigm more generally. It also suggests that in order to fulfil the World Health Organization's (WHO) vision of viewing prisons as health promoting settings, lay views should be recognised to shape future health promotion policy and practice

    Neural correlates of executive function and working memory in the 'at risk mental state'

    Background and Aims: People with ‘prodromal’ symptoms have a very high risk of developing psychosis. We used functional MRI to examine the neurocognitive basis of this vulnerability. Method: Cross-sectional comparison of subjects with an ARMS (n=17), first episode schizophreniform psychosis (n=10) and healthy volunteers (n=15). Subjects were studied using functional MRI while they performed an overt verbal fluency task, a random movement generation paradigm and an N-Back working memory task. Results: During an N-Back task the ARMS group engaged inferior frontal and posterior parietal cortex less than controls but more than the first episode group. During a motor generation task, the ARMS group showed less activation in the left inferior parietal cortex than controls, but greater activation than the first episode group. During verbal fluency using ‘Easy’ letters, the ARMS group demonstrated intermediate activation in the left inferior frontal cortex, with first episode groups showing least, and controls most, activation. When processing ‘Hard’ letters, differential activation was evident in two left inferior frontal regions. In its dorsolateral portion, the ARMS group showed less activation than controls but more than the first episode group, while in the opercular part of the left inferior frontal gyrus / anterior insula activation was greatest in the first episode group, weakest in controls and intermediate in the ARMS group. Conclusions: The ARMS is associated with abnormalities of regional brain function that are qualitatively similar to those in patients who have just developed psychosis but less severe
