Tectonic history of the South Tannuol Fault Zone (Tuva region of the northern Central Asian Orogenic Belt, Russia) : constraints from multi-method geochronology

    Get PDF
In this study, we present zircon U/Pb, plagioclase and K-feldspar Ar-40/Ar-39 and apatite fission track (AFT) data along the South Tannuol Fault Zone (STFZ). Integrating geochronology and multi-method thermochronology places constraints on the formation and subsequent reactivation of the STFZ. Cambrian (similar to 510 Ma) zircon U/Pb ages obtained for felsic volcanic rocks date the final stage of STFZ basement formation. Ordovician (similar to 460-450 Ma) zircon U/Pb ages were obtained for felsic rocks along the structure, dating their emplacement and marking post-formational local magmatic activity along the STFZ. Ar-40/Ar-39 stepwise heating plateau-ages (similar to 410-400 Ma, similar to 365 and similar to 340 Ma) reveal Early Devonian and Late Devonian-Mississippian intrusion and/or post-magmatic cooling episodes of mafic rocks in the basement. Permian (similar to 290 Ma) zircon U/Pb age of mafic rocks documents for the first time Permian magmatism in the study area creating prerequisites for revising the spread of Permian large igneous provinces of Central Asia. The AFT dating and Thermal history modeling based on the AFT data reveals two intracontinental tectonic reactivation episodes of the STFZ: (1) a period of Cretaceous-Eocene (similar to 100-40 Ma) reactivation and (2) the late Neogene (from similar to 10 Ma onwards) impulse after a period of tectonic stability during the Eocene-Miocene (similar to 40-10 Ma)

A numerical study of forced lithospheric thinning

    Get PDF
Subsolidus lithospheric thinning by mantle plumes may be involved in the creation of swells, hotspots, and rifts. Among the major questions concerning this process are the timescale on which it occurs and the structure of the plumes. The lithosphere is known to have been substantially thinned in 10 Ma or less. Current studies are focused on the lithospheric thinning by time-dependent plumes hypothesized to have large temperature differences across them

Cycling stability of a hybrid activated carbon//poly(3- methylthiophene) supercapacitor with N-butyl-Nmethylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ionic liquid as electrolyte

A long cycle-life, high-voltage supercapacitor featuring an activated carbon//poly(3-methylthiophene) hybrid configuration with N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ionic liquid, a solvent-free green electrolyte, was developed. The cyclability of a laboratory scale cell with electrode mass loading sized for practical uses was tested at 60 °C over 16,000 galvanostatic charge–discharge cycles at 10 mA cm−2 in the 1.5 and 3.6 V voltage range. The reported average and maximum specific energy and power, specific capacitance and capacity, equivalent series resistance and coulombic efficiency over cycling demonstrate the long-term viability of this ionic liquid as green electrolyte for high-voltage hybrid supercapacitors

Bandgap dependence of current crowding effect in 3–5 μm InAsSb/InAs planar light emitting devices

    Get PDF
Electroluminescence power profiles and 2D micropatterns have been obtained from InAsSb/InAs planar LEDs tuned at several wavelengths within the 3–5 μm band. Light confined to a small region around the top opaque contact was observed (cw mode, I > 10 mA, T = 300 K). A computer simulation showed that the reason behind the decrease of the emitting area is the current crowding that ensures non-uniform injection into the active region. The effect becomes more apparent in longer wavelength devices (emitting areas of 3.4 and 4.2 μm emitting devices are related as >10 : 1), providing direct evidence that the current crowding is affected by the bandgap energy of an active layer

Rapid Cycling Synchrotron Option for Project X

This paper presents an 8 GeV Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) option for Project X. It has several advantages over an 8 GeV SC linac. In particular, the cost could be lower. With a 2 GeV 10 mA pulsed linac as injector, the RCS would be able to deliver 4 MW beam power for a muon collider. If, instead, a 2 GeV 1 mA CW linac is used, the RCS would still be able to meet the Project X requirements but it would be difficult for it to serve a muon collider due to the very long injection time.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, presentation at the Workshop on Applications of High Intensity Proton Accelerators AHIPA0
