    Signal and Information Processing Methods for Embedded Robotic Tactile Sensing Systems

    The human skin has several sensors with different properties and responses that are able to detect stimuli resulting from mechanical stimulations. Pressure sensors are the most important type of receptors for the exploration and manipulation of objects. In the last decades, smart tactile sensing based on different sensing techniques have been developed as their application in robotics and prosthetics is considered of huge interest, mainly driven by the prospect of autonomous and intelligent robots that can interact with the environment. However, regarding object properties estimation on robots, hardness detection is still a major limitation due to the lack of techniques to estimate it. Furthermore, finding processing methods that can interpret the measured information from multiple sensors and extract relevant information is a Challenging task. Moreover, embedding processing methods and machine learning algorithms in robotic applications to extract meaningful information such as object properties from tactile data is an ongoing challenge, which is controlled by the device constraints (power constraint, memory constraints, etc.), the computational complexity of the processing and machine learning algorithms, the application requirements (real-time operations, high prediction performance). In this dissertation, we focus on the design and implementation of pre-processing methods and machine learning algorithms to handle the aforementioned challenges for a tactile sensing system in robotic application. First, we propose a tactile sensing system for robotic application. Then we present efficient preprocessing and feature extraction methods for our tactile sensors. Then we propose a learning strategy to reduce the computational cost of our processing unit in object classification using sensorized Baxter robot. Finally, we present a real-time robotic tactile sensing system for hardness classification on a resource-constrained devices. The first study represents a further assessment of the sensing system that is based on the PVDF sensors and the interface electronics developed in our lab. In particular, first, it presents the development of a skin patch (multilayer structure) that allows us to use the sensors in several applications such as robotic hand/grippers. Second, it shows the characterization of the developed skin patch. Third, it validates the sensing system. Moreover, we designed a filter to remove noise and detect touch. The experimental assessment demonstrated that the developed skin patch and the interface electronics indeed can detect different touch patterns and stimulus waveforms. Moreover, the results of the experiments defined the frequency range of interest and the response of the system to realistic interactions with the sensing system to grasp and release events. In the next study, we presented an easy integration of our tactile sensing system into Baxter gripper. Computationally efficient pre-processing techniques were designed to filter the signal and extract relevant information from multiple sensor signals, in addition to feature extraction methods. These processing methods aim in turn to reduce also the computational complexity of machine learning algorithms utilized for object classification. The proposed system and processing strategy were evaluated on object classification application by integrating our system into the gripper and we collected data by grasping multiple objects. We further proposed a learning strategy to accomplish a trade-off between the generalization accuracy and the computational cost of the whole processing unit. The proposed pre-processing and feature extraction techniques together with the learning strategy have led to models with extremely low complexity and very high generalization accuracy. Moreover, the support vector machine achieved the best trade-off between accuracy and computational cost on tactile data from our sensors. Finally, we presented the development and implementation on the edge of a real–time tactile sensing system for hardness classification on Baxter robot based on machine and deep learning algorithms. We developed and implemented in plain C a set of functions that provide the fundamental layer functionalities of the Machine learning and Deep Learning models (ML and DL), along with the pre–processing methods to extract the features and normalize the data. The models can be deployed to any device that supports C code since it does not rely on any of the existing libraries. Shallow ML/DL algorithms for the deployment on resource–constrained devices are designed. To evaluate our work, we collected data by grasping objects of different hardness and shape. Two classification problems were addressed: 5 levels of hardness classified on the same objects’ shape, and 5 levels of hardness classified on two different objects’ shape. Furthermore, optimization techniques were employed. The models and pre–processing were implemented on a resource constrained device, where we assessed the performance of the system in terms of accuracy, memory footprint, time latency, and energy consumption. We achieved for both classification problems a real-time inference (< 0.08 ms), low power consumption (i.e., 3.35 μJ), extremely small models (i.e., 1576 Byte), and high accuracy (above 98%)

    Predicting Spike Occurrence and Neuronal Responsiveness from LFPs in Primary Somatosensory Cortex

    Local Field Potentials (LFPs) integrate multiple neuronal events like synaptic inputs and intracellular potentials. LFP spatiotemporal features are particularly relevant in view of their applications both in research (e.g. for understanding brain rhythms, inter-areal neural communication and neronal coding) and in the clinics (e.g. for improving invasive Brain-Machine Interface devices). However the relation between LFPs and spikes is complex and not fully understood. As spikes represent the fundamental currency of neuronal communication this gap in knowledge strongly limits our comprehension of neuronal phenomena underlying LFPs. We investigated the LFP-spike relation during tactile stimulation in primary somatosensory (S-I) cortex in the rat. First we quantified how reliably LFPs and spikes code for a stimulus occurrence. Then we used the information obtained from our analyses to design a predictive model for spike occurrence based on LFP inputs. The model was endowed with a flexible meta-structure whose exact form, both in parameters and structure, was estimated by using a multi-objective optimization strategy. Our method provided a set of nonlinear simple equations that maximized the match between models and true neurons in terms of spike timings and Peri Stimulus Time Histograms. We found that both LFPs and spikes can code for stimulus occurrence with millisecond precision, showing, however, high variability. Spike patterns were predicted significantly above chance for 75% of the neurons analysed. Crucially, the level of prediction accuracy depended on the reliability in coding for the stimulus occurrence. The best predictions were obtained when both spikes and LFPs were highly responsive to the stimuli. Spike reliability is known to depend on neuron intrinsic properties (i.e. on channel noise) and on spontaneous local network fluctuations. Our results suggest that the latter, measured through the LFP response variability, play a dominant role

    The Shape of Damping: Optimizing Damping Coefficients to Improve Transparency on Bilateral Telemanipulation

    This thesis presents a novel optimization-based passivity control algorithm for hapticenabled bilateral teleoperation systems involving multiple degrees of freedom. In particular, in the context of energy-bounding control, the contribution focuses on the implementation of a passivity layer for an existing time-domain scheme, ensuring optimal transparency of the interaction along subsets of the environment space which are preponderant for the given task, while preserving the energy bounds required for passivity. The involved optimization problem is convex and amenable to real-time implementation. The effectiveness of the proposed design is validated via an experiment performed on a virtual teleoperated environment. The interplay between transparency and stability is a critical aspect in haptic-enabled bilateral teleoperation control. While it is important to present the user with the true impedance of the environment, destabilizing factors such as time delays, stiff environments, and a relaxed grasp on the master device may compromise the stability and safety of the system. Passivity has been exploited as one of the the main tools for providing sufficient conditions for stable teleoperation in several controller design approaches, such as the scattering algorithm, timedomain passivity control, energy bounding algorithm, and passive set position modulation. In this work it is presented an innovative energy-based approach, which builds upon existing time-domain passivity controllers, improving and extending their effectiveness and functionality. The set of damping coefficients are prioritized in each degree of freedom, the resulting transparency presents a realistic force feedback in comparison to the other directions. Thus, the prioritization takes effect using a quadratic programming algorithm to find the optimal values for the damping. Finally, the energy tanks approach on passivity control is a solution used to ensure stability in a system for robotics bilateral manipulation. The bilateral telemanipulation must maintain the principle of passivity in all moments to preserve the system\u2019s stability. This work presents a brief introduction to haptic devices as a master component on the telemanipulation chain; the end effector in the slave side is a representation of an interactive object within an environment having a force sensor as feedback signal. The whole interface is designed into a cross-platform framework named ROS, where the user interacts with the system. Experimental results are presented

    Design and Development of Sensor Integrated Robotic Hand

    Most of the automated systems using robots as agents do use few sensors according to the need. However, there are situations where the tasks carried out by the end-effector, or for that matter by the robot hand needs multiple sensors. The hand, to make the best use of these sensors, and behave autonomously, requires a set of appropriate types of sensors which could be integrated in proper manners. The present research work aims at developing a sensor integrated robot hand that can collect information related to the assigned tasks, assimilate there correctly and then do task action as appropriate. The process of development involves selection of sensors of right types and of right specification, locating then at proper places in the hand, checking their functionality individually and calibrating them for the envisaged process. Since the sensors need to be integrated so that they perform in the desired manner collectively, an integration platform is created using NI PXIe-1082. A set of algorithm is developed for achieving the integrated model. The entire process is first modelled and simulated off line for possible modification in order to ensure that all the sensors do contribute towards the autonomy of the hand for desired activity. This work also involves design of a two-fingered gripper. The design is made in such a way that it is capable of carrying out the desired tasks and can accommodate all the sensors within its fold. The developed sensor integrated hand has been put to work and its performance test has been carried out. This hand can be very useful for part assembly work in industries for any shape of part with a limit on the size of the part in mind. The broad aim is to design, model simulate and develop an advanced robotic hand. Sensors for pick up contacts pressure, force, torque, position, surface profile shape using suitable sensing elements in a robot hand are to be introduced. The hand is a complex structure with large number of degrees of freedom and has multiple sensing capabilities apart from the associated sensing assistance from other organs. The present work is envisaged to add multiple sensors to a two-fingered robotic hand having motion capabilities and constraints similar to the human hand. There has been a good amount of research and development in this field during the last two decades a lot remains to be explored and achieved. The objective of the proposed work is to design, simulate and develop a sensor integrated robotic hand. Its potential applications can be proposed for industrial environments and in healthcare field. The industrial applications include electronic assembly tasks, lighter inspection tasks, etc. Application in healthcare could be in the areas of rehabilitation and assistive techniques. The work also aims to establish the requirement of the robotic hand for the target application areas, to identify the suitable kinds and model of sensors that can be integrated on hand control system. Functioning of motors in the robotic hand and integration of appropriate sensors for the desired motion is explained for the control of the various elements of the hand. Additional sensors, capable of collecting external information and information about the object for manipulation is explored. Processes are designed using various software and hardware tools such as mathematical computation MATLAB, OpenCV library and LabVIEW 2013 DAQ system as applicable, validated theoretically and finally implemented to develop an intelligent robotic hand. The multiple smart sensors are installed on a standard six degree-of-freedom industrial robot KAWASAKI RS06L articulated manipulator, with the two-finger pneumatic SHUNK robotic hand or designed prototype and robot control programs are integrated in such a manner that allows easy application of grasping in an industrial pick-and-place operation where the characteristics of the object can vary or are unknown. The effectiveness of the actual recommended structure is usually proven simply by experiments using calibration involving sensors and manipulator.     Additive Manufacturing of Conducting Polymers: Recent Advances, Challenges and Opportunities

    Unformatted postprintConducting polymers (CPs) have been attracting great attention in the development of (bio)electronic devices. Most of current devices are rigid 2D systems and possess uncontrollable geometries and architectures that lead to poor mechanical properties presenting ion/electronic diffusion limitations. The goal of the article is to provide an overview about the additive manufacturing (AM) of conducting polymers, which is of paramount importance for the design of future wearable 3D (bio)electronic devices. Among different 3D printing AM techniques, inkjet, extrusion, electrohydrodynamic and light-based printing have been mainly used. This review article collects examples of 3D printing of conducting polymers such as poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene) (PEDOT), polypyrrole (PPy) and polyaniline (PANi). It also shows examples of AM of these polymers combined with other polymers and/or conducting fillers such as carbon nanotubes, graphene and silver nanowires.     A new emotional robot assistant that facilitates human interaction and persuasion

    The development of robots that are truly sociable requires understanding how human interactions can be applied to the interaction between humans and robots. A sociable robot must be able to interact with people taking into account aspects like verbal and non-verbal communications (emotions, postures, gestures). This work presents a social robot which main goal is to provide assistance to older people in carrying out their daily activities (through suggestions or reminders). In addition, the robot presents non-verbal communications like perceiving emotions and displaying human identifiable emotions in order to express empathy.
