Shattered Communities: Soldiers, Rabbis, and the Ostjuden under German Occupation: 1915-1918

“Shattered Communities: Soldiers, Rabbis, and the Ostjuden during Occupation: 1915-1918 addresses the interethnic experience in Poland during the German occupation of 1915-1918. This dissertation demonstrates that the German design for \u27modernization\u27 of the East began with the First World War, which envisioned the Jews as a critically vital component, rather than an obstacle to their success. The German military made its connection to the peoples in the East via its own army rabbis and Jewish administrators. This work examines the role of the German Army rabbis, in 1915, in establishing a Jewish press and Jewish schools, along with Jewish relief agencies funded by German Jewish businessmen, in assisting the local Ostjuden communities. By the time the guns stopped firing in 1918, however, the German government had reneged on their promises of recognition and help, and the circumstances of many Ostjuden were as precarious as they had been before the war. Even worse, the experience of war in the East encouraged the rise of racist nationalism in Germany and Eastern Europe. The roots of Nazi policies toward Jews were planted firmly in Poland and Lithuania between 1915 and 1918. But for defeat in the war, it is highly unlikely that the Nazis would ever have risen to power, and in the absence of the German experience of war in the East, the later commitment to a Jewish genocide might never have been imagined. By examining the transnational relationship between the Germans and the Polish Jewish communities during the Great War, I contribute to a better understanding of the complexities leading to the crucial fracture that took place under the pressure of total war in 1917

Fragments of a trajectory. The Galeries Laietanes (Gran Via 613, Barcelona) were one of the most versatile and popular cultural areas of Barcelona in the first half of the 20th century. They were also one of the cogs in the art system of this century, a prelude to the collections of the Museu Nacional d’Art. Chełm Orthodox Diocese as Mentioned in the Gazeta Ludowa. Tygodnik Ilustrowany Weekly from 1915 to 1918AbstractDuring the First World War the illustrated weekly Gazeta Ludowa. Tygodnik Ilustrowany was associated with peasant parties: the Polish Peasant Party “Piast” (Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe “Piast”) and the Peasant Union (Zjednoczenie Ludowe). An analysis of the weekly makes it possible to observe the functioning of Chełm Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church in 1915–1918 in the territories of the Polish Kingdom after its faithful were sent to the Russian hinterland (August 1915). The archival material on the history of the Chełm Orthodox Diocese has been both much destroyed and dispersed, and thus one of the possible ways to study the history of Chełm eparchy is to examine the content of the press published in 1915–1918 in the Polish territories. The illustrated weekly under the analysis touched upon subjects pertaining to war destructions in the diocese of Chełm, consequences of a large number of civilians from the guberniyas of Chełm and Lublin sent to the Russian hinterland by the Russian administration and army in 1915, the first stages of the repossession of the Orthodox Church by the Roman Catholic Church, and attempts to establish local missions by the Jesuit Order and the Greek Orthodox priests. Initial research conclusions could be formulated after a look into the history of the Chełm eparchy before 1914 and at the situation during the first years of the Great War in the whole Chełm region and southern Podlachia. The presented analysis does not exhaust the subject under discussion, but previews it for further study.

The Iñupiat Origin of Santa Claus

This paper rejects the idea the legendary character Santa Claus traces back to Saint Nicholas and instead proposes a more recent historical figure – Walter Clement Shields (1884–1918) who organised reindeer fairs in Seward Peninsula, Alaska between 1915 and 1918. Shields died of an influenza epidemic in 1918 but was by venerated by indigenous inhabitants of northwest Alaska, the Iñupiat. Stories of Shields in Iñupiat folklore became embellished when retold and they were spread by traders of reindeer meat across the US in the 1920

An updated catalogue of the 174 described representatives of Orphnebius Motschulsky, 1858 in the East Palaearctic and Oriental regions is provided; the species are grouped according to a recently proposed intrageneric system. Amaurodera Fauvel, 1905 currently includes 53 described species distributed in the southern East Palaearctic and the Oriental regions. Additional records of 46 named and three unnamed species are reported, among them several new country records. The distributions of two Himalayan Orphnebius species are mapped. The globe\u27s representation of the Armenian genocide and Canada\u27s acknowledgement

    Get PDF
The Armenian genocide of 1915-1918 was the first of the 20th century, and yet many countries--including the perpetrator, Turkey--fail to acknowledge this systematic and intentional massacre of the Armenian people as genocide. My research aims to understand how the Canadian mainstream news media represented the victims during the 1915-1918 Armenian genocide, and to explore Canada\u27s recognition of that genocide between 2004 and 2006. Specifically, I look at how the events of the Armenian genocide are represented by the same agenda-setting media outlet (the Globe and Mail) in completely different ways at distinct points in time. In this case, the events of the genocide do not change, but changing political and economic relationships adversely affect the amount and quality of coverage

The History of the Enigma Machine

    Get PDF
The history of the Enigma machine begins with the invention of the rotor-based cipher machine in 1915. Various models for rotor-based cipher machines were developed somewhat simultaneously in different parts of the world. However, the first documented rotor machine was developed by Dutch naval officers in 1915. Nonetheless, the Enigma machine was officially invented following the end of World War I by Arthur Scherbius in 1918 (Faint, 2016)
