    Structural Changes in Unionization: 1973-1981

This paper presents a decomposition of the decline in union density into structural and within sector components using CPS data for private sector workers. We find that 58 to 68 percent of the decline in private sector unionization between 1973 and 1981 can be accounted for by structural changes in the economy, particularly in the occupational, educational and gender distribution of the workforce. This is a large impact, but we find that while structural change is important, its importance was not appreciably greate during the 1970s than during previous decades. At the same time, we find that the decline of private sector unionization within sectors has been pervasive, accounting for 32 to 42 percent of union decline. As part of this analysis we find that the decline in union density has been greater in those sectors of the economy where employment decline has been greater. This fact can help reconcile previous divergent findings on the importance of structural change.

Natural rates of profit, natural prices, and the actual economic systems - a theoretical framework

    Get PDF
The aim of the present paper is that of exploiting the notions of vertically (hyper-)integrated sectors, as discussed in Pasinetti (1973) and Pasinetti (1988), and of natural system, as defined in Pasinetti (1981), in order to build up an analytical framework in which data from national accounts can be consistently inserted and hence used to analyse actual economic systems. Pasinetti (1981) built up an analytical framework in which the economy is divided into as many vertically (hyper-)integrated sectors as there are consumption goods. Each vertically integrated sector is summarised, as explained in Pasinetti (1973), by a composite commodity — a unit of vertically integrated productive capacity — made up by all the goods that enter, both directly and indirectly, the production of the corresponding consumption good, and a unit of vertically integrated labour, i.e. the quantity of labour that directly and indirectly enters the production of the consumption goods. Being the model developed in Pasinetti (1981) a vertical integrated model, there is a link between it and the analytical formulations provided by Pasinetti (1973) and Pasinetti (1988). However, such an analytic link has not been singled out explicitly, thus making it difficult to use the model itself for empirical purposes. The aim of the present paper is therefore precisely that of making this further step, in order to set up a theoretical framework which can be fruitfully used for empirical analyses of actual economic systems.Natural system, vertical integrated sectors, functional income distribution, natural rates of profit, natural prices.

Report on the 1980/81 angling census in the Sanyati Gorge, Lake Kariba

    Get PDF
The angling census carried out in the Sanyati Gorge, August 1980 - March 1981, is reported. The results are compared to those obtained in the 1973 census. The objectives of the census were: 1) to determine the extent of angling mortality on tigerfish (Hydrocynus vittatus) thereby quantifying this previously neglected component of total mortality; and 2) to assess the economic importance of tigerfish to the recreational fishery on Lake Kariba

Rise in the frequency of cloud cover in LANDSAT data for the period 1973 to 1981

    Get PDF
Percentages of cloud cover in LANDSAT imagery were used to calculate the cloud cover monthly average statistic for each LANDSAT scene in Brazil, during the period of 1973 to 1981. The average monthly cloud cover and the monthly minimum cloud cover were also calculated for the regions of north, northeast, central west, southeast and south, separately

Declining Unionization in Construction: The Facts and the Reasons

    Get PDF
This paper documents and examines the forces behind the decline of unionization in the construction industry. The proportion of construction workers belonging to unions has dropped from slightly less than one-half in 1966 to less than one-third in 1984. The employment share of union contractors has declined even further because of the fraction of union members working in the open shop rose from 29 to 46 percent between 1973 and 1981. Initially, an important factor in the initial decline in percentage unionized was the growth in the union-nonunion wage gap between 1967 and 1973. However, the gap did not widen any further after 1973 and actually has narrowed substantially since 1978. A key subsequent factor has been the erosion of the productivity advantage of union contractors, which dropped substantially between 1972 and 1977 and vanished by 1982. The decline of unionization is unrelated to changes in worker characteristics or changes in the mix and location of construction activity.

THE IGNALINA NUCLEAR POWER PLANT AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Lithuania has to solve a lot of problems when closing Ignalina nuclear power plant (INPP). One of them is predicting, monitoring and managing of radiation situation and its impact to environment during this period. Calculated data files for nuclides in nuclear fuel could be used for this aim. This work presents our calculations of concentrations and activities of actinides and fission products in RBMK-1500 reactor fuel in dependence on fuel burn up and cooling time.Calculations were made using French computer code Apollo1 [1]

U.S. intervention and the early dollar float: 1973-1981

    Get PDF
The dollar’s depreciation during the early floating rate period, 1973–1981, was a symptom of the Great Inflation. In that environment, sterilized foreign exchange interventions were ineffective in halting the dollar’s decline, but they showed a limited ability to smooth dollar movements. Only after the Volcker FOMC changed its monetary-policy approach and demonstrated a willingness to maintain a disinflationary stance despite severe economic weakness and high unemployment did the dollar begin a sustained appreciation. Also contributing to the ineffectiveness of the interventions was the Desk’s method of operation. The small, covert interventions, particularly prior to 1977, seemed inconsistent with an expectations channel of influence, and financing intervention with short-term borrowed funds seemed inconsistent with a portfolio-balance channel of influence. The Desk never clearly articulated an intervention transmission mechanism. The episode indicated the shortcomings of sterilized intervention and led to their cessation in April 1981.Banks and banking, Central ; Foreign exchange administration ; Monetary policy ; Federal Open Market Committee
