Mathematical Metacognitive Skills and Academic Resilience of Mathematics Education Students: A Mixed- methods Study

This study explored how mathematical metacognitive skills relate to academic resilience among mathematics education students from a local college in Davao del Norte. Implementing both qualitative and quantitative strategies, data were gathered from 131 students through structured questionnaires, while deeper insights came from in-depth interviews and group discussions involving 14 purposively selected informants. The results showed that students generally had high levels of both metacognitive skills and resilience. A significant positive correlation, r(129) = .534, p < .05, suggested that those better at regulating their thinking and problem-solving were also more capable of returning from academic challenges. This correlation corresponds to a large effect size of approximately Cohen’s d = 1.27, indicating that the relationship is not only statistically significant but also practically meaningful in real educational settings. Students shared stories of struggling to manage their learning, yet many described how they learned to reflect on their mistakes, seek support from classmates, and take more initiative over time. Taken together, the findings show that metacognitive skills have a meaningful impact on helping learners stay strong and succeed in the face of academic pressure. This points to the value of embedding metacognitive training in math education, encouraging peer support, and creating learning spaces that help students grow not just academically, but personally as well

The Mediating Effect of Self- directed Learning on the Relationship between Critical Thinking Disposition and Commitment to Learning among Teacher Education Students in KCAST

This study explored how self-directed learning (SDL) mediates the relationship between critical thinking disposition (CTD) and commitment to learning (CTL) among 215 teacher education students at Kapalong College of Agriculture, Sciences, and Technology (KCAST). A descriptive-correlational design and mediation analysis using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) were employed. All three constructs—CTD (M = 4.24), SDL (M = 4.13), and CTL (M = 4.27)—were rated at high or very high levels. Results revealed strong correlations between CTD and SDL (r = .733), and SDL and CTL (r = .607). Mediation analysis confirmed that SDL fully mediated the effect of CTD on CTL. The direct path from CTD to CTL was not significant (β = 0.073, p = .258), while the indirect effect via SDL was significant (β = 0.506, 95% CI [0.394, 0.619], p < .001). The model explained 56.4% of the variance in learning commitment (R² = 0.564), underscoring SDL's crucial role. These findings highlight the importance of promoting self-directed learning to enhance student engagement, autonomy, and lifelong learning commitment among future educators

This study explores the academic and emotional journeys of public school students in the Philippines whose parents work abroad. Focusing on three participants across elementary, high school, and college levels, it examines their coping mechanisms, educational motivations, and perspectives on the future. Using a qualitative multiple-case study design, the research highlights how these students manage loneliness, develop resilience, and challenge misconceptions about Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) families. The study contributes a localized, age-diverse perspective to existing literature. Findings emphasize the need for targeted school-based interventions and policies to support this vulnerable student group. The study explored the academic and emotional experiences of public-school students with Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) parents. It focused on their educational journey, coping strategies, and overall outlook on education. Using a qualitative multiple case study approach, the researchers conducted in-depth interviews with three students: one from elementary, one from high school, and one from college. Validation methods such as triangulation, member checking, and audit trails ensured the credibility of the findings. Results showed that students faced emotional challenges like loneliness and social stigma but remained academically motivated. Their resilience was supported by strong social networks, inspiration from their parents’ sacrifices, and emotional strength. These factors helped them stay focused on their goals and develop a strong appreciation for education. The study concluded that despite the challenges, students with OFW parents demonstrate determination and adaptability. It recommended targeted support from educators and policymakers and provided a foundation for further research on the long-term impact of parental migration

Demystifying Sorrows and Pain: Lexico- semantic Analysis of Philippine Songs in English about Death

This study conducted a comprehensive lexico-semantic analysis of Philippine songs in English that are thematically centered on death. Using a qualitative corpus-based approach, the research aimed to examine the morphological and semantic elements, explore the literary features, and identify the prevailing themes embedded in the song lyrics. A total of twenty-five (25) songs were carefully selected and analyzed to uncover deeper meanings and patterns within the language used. The findings revealed that these songs utilize a variety of morphological processes, such as affixation, compounding, and inflection as well as semantic strategies that shape how words are formed and how meaning is constructed and conveyed. In addition to these linguistic elements, the study also highlighted the presence of literary techniques, including imagery, symbolism, metaphor, and repetition, which enrich the emotional and stylistic expression of the lyrics. While grief emerged as a dominant theme, the songs also conveyed powerful messages of comfort, faith, resilience, and hope. These themes are particularly significant as they provide a meaningful avenue for artistic and emotional expression. These songs are important because they offer an opportunity for artistic creativity and create important support for people experiencing all aspects of loss and grief, and additionally contribute to the varied content of Filipino music

Roberto Bolaño's Literary Cartography: Violence, Memory, and Transnational Spaces in "2666" and "The Savage Detectives"

The Savage Detectives and 2666 by Roberto Bolaño build a transnational literary cartography that carefully studies violence, memory, and exile in international as well as Latin American settings. These novels represent such a “wild” literary space that is beyond national borders, inhabited instead by poet-wanderers treading landscapes of exile and violence. 2666’s vast, fractured narrative strategically represents suffering from a global perspective and elsewhere in its account of the femicide in the imaginary Santa Teresa, Mexico. Its violence, physical and symbolic, is knotted with historical trauma and memory, following Charles Tripp’s idea of violence as a producer of freedom, identity, and language. Bolaño’s work is colored by Giorgio Agamben’s formulation of destitute power, with his poet-protagonists debunking hegemonic stories and realizing radical ungovernability. From this perspective, Bolaño critiques nationalism, and positions his characters in in between spaces where identity politics, memory and globalization are questioned. His border-crossing poetics deconstruct text unpolitical borders, and participate in world literature theories on center-periphery relations. Bolaño is portrayed as a latecomer to the literary “Greenwich meridian,” and yet through his essentially marginal and global perspectives, he in turn has deeply recast this axis. Therein lies the importance of Bolaño’s literary cartography: the manner in which it confronts the normalized barbarism of our time and its rejection of historical oblivion. Residentially dislocated by military campaigns in his home country, M.'s own fragmented (fugal) storytelling of multiple voices and open-ended stories reiterates the ongoing Ness of trauma and the moral responsibility of witnessing. Bolaño’s fictions, in the end, demonstrate literature’s ability to “map” where violence, memory, and transnationality intersect, revealing important information about the global socio-political fabric of today. His work defies not just the conventions of the literary, but the very limitations of literature, and indeed the function of storytelling in a world ruled by globalized injustice
