    The Role of Structural Reflection in Distributed Virtual Reality

    The emergence of collaborative virtual world applications that run over the Internet has presented Virtual Reality (VR) application designers with new challenges. In an environment where the public internet streams multimedia data and is constantly under pressure to deliver over widely heterogeneous user-platforms, there has been a growing need that distributed virtual world applications be aware of and adapt to frequent variations in their context of execution. In this paper, we argue that in contrast to research efforts targeted at improvement of scalability, persistence and responsiveness capabilities, much less attempts have been aimed at addressing the flexibility, maintainability and extensibility requirements in contemporary Distributed VR applications. We propose the use of structural reflection as an approach that not only addresses these requirements but also offers added value in the form of providing a framework for scalability, persistence and responsiveness that is itself flexible, maintainable and extensible

    Multiuser Detection For Asynchronous ARGOS Signals

    In this paper, we investigate the application of multiuser detection techniques to a Low Polar Orbit (LPO) mobile satellite used in the ARGOS system. These techniques are used to mitigate the multiple access interference in the uplink transmission of the system. Unlike CDMA, due to the Doppler Effect, each signal has a different received carrier frequency and a different propagation delay. Multiuser detection techniques are proposed for asynchronous transmission in ARGOS system: the maximum likelihood detector, the conventional detector, and the sequential interference cancellation detector, as solutions to tackle the interference effects.     Target and (Astro-)WISE technologies - Data federations and its applications

    After its first implementation in 2003 the Astro-WISE technology has been rolled out in several European countries and is used for the production of the KiDS survey data. In the multi-disciplinary Target initiative this technology, nicknamed WISE technology, has been further applied to a large number of projects. Here, we highlight the data handling of other astronomical applications, such as VLT-MUSE and LOFAR, together with some non-astronomical applications such as the medical projects Lifelines and GLIMPS, the MONK handwritten text recognition system, and business applications, by amongst others, the Target Holding.     Fraunhofer FIRST develops a computing service and collaborative workspace providing a convenient tool for simulation and investigation of quantum algorithms. To broaden the twenty qubit limit of workstation-based simulations to the next qubit decade we provide a dedicated high memorized Linux cluster with fast Myrinet interconnection network together with a adapted parallel simulator engine. This simulation service supplemented by a collaborative workspace is usable everywhere via web interface and integrates both hardware and software as collaboration and investigation platform for the quantum community. The beta test version realizes all common one, two and three qubit gates, arbitrary one and two bit gates, orthogonal measurements as well as special gates like Oracle, Modulo function, Quantum Fourier Transformation and arbitrary Spin-Hamiltonians up to 31 qubits.     Satellite mobile data service for Canada

    A commercial mobile satellite system which is to be constructed and operated in Canada is examined. This is done in two phases. First, mobile data services was introduced. Hub equipment and 3000 mobile data terminals were supplied. Over the satellite tests were performed. The mobile data service provides full two way digital messaging automatic vehicle location and fleet management services. The second phase is to construct, launch and make operational the MSAT satellite and associated network control facilities. The implementation is examined of the mobile data service in Canada, including the technical description. Marketing and applications are also examined

    Impact of Imperfect Parameter Estimation on the Performance of Multi-User ARGOS Receivers

    In this paper, we analyze the performance of Successive Interference Cancelation (SIC) receivers in the context of the ARGOS satellite system. Multi-user SIC receivers are studied in presence of imperfect estimates of signal parameters. We derive performance graphs that show the parameter ranges over which a successful demodulation of all users is possible. First, the graphs are derived in the context of perfect parameter estimation. Then, imperfect parameter estimation is considered. Erroneous estimations affect both the amplitude and the time delay of the received signal. Carrier frequencies are assumed to be accurately measured by the receiver. ARGOS SIC receivers are shown to be both robust to imperfect amplitude estimation and sensitive to imperfect time delay estimation

    Rude waiter but mouthwatering pastries! An exploratory study into Dutch aspect-based sentiment analysis

    The fine-grained task of automatically detecting all sentiment expressions within a given document and the aspects to which they refer is known as aspect-based sentiment analysis. In this paper we present the first full aspect-based sentiment analysis pipeline for Dutch and apply it to customer reviews. To this purpose, we collected reviews from two different domains, i.e. restaurant and smartphone reviews. Both corpora have been manually annotated using newly developed guidelines that comply to standard practices in the field. For our experimental pipeline we perceive aspect-based sentiment analysis as a task consisting of three main subtasks which have to be tackled incrementally: aspect term extraction, aspect category classification and polarity classification. First experiments on our Dutch restaurant corpus reveal that this is indeed a feasible approach that yields promising results
