Relevant logics, modal logics and theory change

This thesis is a contribution to applied relevant logics. In Part One relevant logics are presented proof-theoretically and semantically. These logics are then extended to modal logics. Completeness proofs for all of the logics presented in Part One are provided. In Part Two, the logics of Part One are applied to certain problems in philosophical logic and Artificial Intelligence. Deontic and epistemic logics based on relevant logics are presented in chapter three and chapter four contains an extensive investigation of the logic of theory change (or database updating)

Software theory change for resilient near-complete specifications

Software evolution and its laws are essential for antifragile system design and development. In this paper we model early-stage perfective and corrective changes to software system architecture in terms of logical operations of expansion and safe contraction on a theory. As a result, we formulate an inference-based notion of property specification resilience for computational systems, intended as resistance to change. The individuated resilient core of a software system is used to characterize adaptability properties

A logical Reconstruction of Leonard Bloomfield's Linguistic Theory

In this work we present a logical reconstruction of Leonard Bloom- field’s theory of structural linguistics. First, the central notions of this theory are analyzed and discussed. In the following section, a recon- struction with the so-called structuralist approach in the philosophy of science is presented. After defining the general framework of Bloom- field’s theory, questions of lawlikeness and theoretical terms will be discussed. In a further step, this work aims to contribute to the dis- cussion of theory change and scientific realism, applied to linguistic theory. After the reconstruction of further theories of linguistics, it can be studied whether certain inter theoretical relations hold. It aims to be a contribution to the discussion on the foundations of linguistics

Approaching the truth via belief change in propositional languages

Starting from the sixties of the past century theory change has become a main concern of philosophy of science. Two of the best known formal accounts of theory change are the post-Popperian theories of verisimilitude (PPV for short) and the AGM theory of belief change (AGM for short). In this paper, we will investigate the conceptual relations between PPV and AGM and, in particular, we will ask whether the AGM rules for theory change are effective means for approaching the truth, i.e., for achieving the cognitive aim of science pointed out by PPV. First, the key ideas of PPV and AGM and their application to a particular kind of propositional theories - the so called "conjunctive propositions" - will be illustrated. Afterwards, we will prove that, as far as conjunctive propositions are concerned, AGM belief change is an effective tool for approaching the truth
