    Re-proving Channel Polarization Theorems: An Extremality and Robustness Analysis

    The general subject considered in this thesis is a recently discovered coding technique, polar coding, which is used to construct a class of error correction codes with unique properties. In his ground-breaking work, Ar{\i}kan proved that this class of codes, called polar codes, achieve the symmetric capacity --- the mutual information evaluated at the uniform input distribution ---of any stationary binary discrete memoryless channel with low complexity encoders and decoders requiring in the order of O(NlogN)O(N\log N) operations in the block-length NN. This discovery settled the long standing open problem left by Shannon of finding low complexity codes achieving the channel capacity. Polar coding settled an open problem in information theory, yet opened plenty of challenging problems that need to be addressed. A significant part of this thesis is dedicated to advancing the knowledge about this technique in two directions. The first one provides a better understanding of polar coding by generalizing some of the existing results and discussing their implications, and the second one studies the robustness of the theory over communication models introducing various forms of uncertainty or variations into the probabilistic model of the channel.Comment: Preview of my PhD Thesis, EPFL, Lausanne, 2014.     Structural and hydrogeological features of a Lias carbonate aquifer in the Triffa Plain, NE Morocco

    The rising demand for water and the contamination of shallow water table aquifers has led authorities in NE Morocco to look for deeper groundwater resources in the Triffa Plain, namely in Lower Jurassic (Lias) dolomitic limestones. The liassic aquifer is of strategic importance for the development of the region, however, its hydrodynamic behaviour is poorly understood due to lack of hydrogeological data and block structure. This article presents a first effort towards understanding the structure and hydraulic behaviour of the aquifer. Exploration borehole data and results from geophysical campaigns were integrated into a GIS environment to build a preliminary model of the aquifer structure. The aquifer behaves as an unconfined aquifer in the northern part of the Béni Snassen Mountains (the recharge area), but as it dips to the north, it becomes confined by marls and shales of the Middle/Upper Jurassic. Even though piezometric level data are scarce, a tentative piezometric map was produced. Three blocks separated by NW–SE trending faults in a horst and graben structure, with distinct flow behaviours were identified: Berkane, Fezouane and Sidi Rahmoun blocks. Those blocks also show differences in hydraulic conductivity distribution. As a result of the reaction with the dolomitic limestones, the groundwater is of calcium-magnesium bicarbonate type. Groundwater temperature as measured in springs ranges from 29 C to 37 C in springs and constitutes a potential low enthalpy geothermal resource

    Comparison of phenolic and volatile profiles of edible and toxic forms of Detarium senegalense J. F. GMEL

    In Senegal, Detarium senegalense J.F. Gmel. (ditax in Wolof) is one of the most important important forest fruit species. However, exploitation of the edible fruit is based on local people's knowledge. Only trees whose fruits are consumed by animals are exploited. To identify them, a chemical comparison of edible and toxic forms was done in order to highlight differences between both forms. Dichloromethane leaf extracts from toxic and edible trees were analyzed by gas chromatography. Phenolic profile and volatile compounds from fruits extracts were studied respectively by High Performance Liquid Chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Cytotoxicity effect of fruits extracts was evaluated on murine macrophage cells J774 A1. GC-analysis of dichloromethane leaf extracts revealed the presence of lupenone and lupeol only in toxic extracts. 6'-O-galloyl-epiheterodendrin and isovaleronitrile were detected in toxic pulp. However, no cytotoxic effect was found in our conditions. This study has given the opportunity to identify within the same species, compounds which could differentiate both edible and toxic forms. Nevertheless further studies are needed to better understand which compounds are responsible for toxicity in the toxic form. (Résumé d'auteur

    Animals, advance directives, and prudence: Should we let the cheerfully demented die?

    A high level of confidence in the identity of individuals is required to let them die as ordered by an advance directive. Thus, if we are animalists, then we should lack the confidence required to apply lethal advance directives to the cheerfully demented, or so I argue. In short, there is consensus among animalists that the best way to avoid serious objections to their account is to adopt an ontology that denies the existence of brains, hands, tables, chairs, iced-tea, and lemonade. The adoption of such an ontology reduces the justificatory force of commonsense, which is key in arguing that we are animals and that we persist as long as we are biologically alive. With this loss of justification comes the loss of a high level of confidence that Quinn-pre-dementia’s lethal advanced directive applies to Quinn-post-dementia, via identity. If we do not have a high level of confidence that Quinn-pre-dementia’s advanced directive applies to Quinn-post- dementia, then it is not enough (on its own) to let Quinn-post-dementia die

    The flux of atmospheric/soil CO2 consumed by chemical weathering of the continents (FCO2) can be estimated from bicarbonate concentrations in surface water. Using data from the bibliography for 232 small monolithologic watersheds, relationships between FCO2 and the runoff (Q) have been determined For the major rock types outcropping on the continents. The models fitted to these relationships are then applied to the Garonne and Congo river basins, in order to calculate the mean CO2 flux consumed in these basins. The results obtained are close to previous estimates bosed on field measurement

    Dynamic hybrid simulation of batch processes driven by a scheduling module

    Simulation is now a CAPE tool widely used by practicing engineers for process design and control. In particular, it allows various offline analyses to improve system performance such as productivity, energy efficiency, waste reduction, etc. In this framework, we have developed the dynamic hybrid simulation environment PrODHyS whose particularity is to provide general and reusable object-oriented components dedicated to the modeling of devices and operations found in chemical processes. Unlike continuous processes, the dynamic simulation of batch processes requires the execution of control recipes to achieve a set of production orders. For these reasons, PrODHyS is coupled to a scheduling module (ProSched) based on a MILP mathematical model in order to initialize various operational parameters and to ensure a proper completion of the simulation.
