MicroRNA sensors
This paper was presented at the 4th Micro and Nano Flows Conference (MNF2014), which was held at University College, London, UK. The conference was organised by Brunel University and supported by the Italian Union of Thermofluiddynamics, IPEM, the Process Intensification Network, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Heat Transfer Society, HEXAG - the Heat Exchange Action Group, and the Energy Institute, ASME Press, LCN London Centre for Nanotechnology, UCL University College London, UCL Engineering, the International NanoScience Community, www.nanopaprika.eu.We have developed a technology for the profiling of miRNA expression in intact cells. The approach is based on sensor oligonucleotides, which upon entering the cell, bind specific miRNA targets, are cleaved as a result of this binding, and produce a fluorescent signal that is proportional to the abundance of the miRNA target. Specifically, the sensor oligonucleotides are completely complementary to a target miRNA species, are non-stabilized around the seed region (the region cleaved by the miRNA-RISC), and are labeled with a fluorescent dye and a quencher at their 5’- and 3’- end respectively. Upon entering the cell, these oligonucleotides engage the target miRNA by complementary base pairing. This leads to recruitment of the RNA induced silencing complex (RISC) to the duplex. The complex cleaves the sensor oligonucleotide and the miRNA is free to “catalyze” subsequent clevage reactions. The cleavage of the sensor oligo leads to separation between the dye and the quencher, and a resultant fluorescent enhancement that can be measured.
We have demonstrated the feasibility of this method for the sensing of the pro-metastatic miRNA-10b in cell-free extracts and intact cells using human and murine breast adenocarcinoma cell lines.
The miRNA epigenome represents a fundamental molecular regulator of metastasis. Consequently, developing tools to understand metastatic changes at the miRNA level can lead to the mapping out of a comprehensive and systematic atlas of cancer progression. The described technology is potentially transformative because it addresses this important issue. Furthermore, the technology has broad implications and can be utilized in any model system or clinical scenario to answer questions related to microRNA function. Specifically, the technology can help distinguish, assess, and/or monitor cancer stages and progression; aid the elucidation of basic mechanisms underlying cancer initiation and progression; facilitate early cancer detection and/or cancer risk assessment; and facilitate/accelerate the process of drug discovery

Advancing Artificial Intelligence in Sensors, Signals, and Imaging Informatics.
ObjectiveTo identify research works that exemplify recent developments in the field of sensors, signals, and imaging informatics.MethodA broad literature search was conducted using PubMed and Web of Science, supplemented with individual papers that were nominated by section editors. A predefined query made from a combination of Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms and keywords were used to search both sources. Section editors then filtered the entire set of retrieved papers with each paper having been reviewed by two section editors. Papers were assessed on a three-point Likert scale by two section editors, rated from 0 (do not include) to 2 (should be included). Only papers with a combined score of 2 or above were considered.ResultsA search for papers was executed at the start of January 2019, resulting in a combined set of 1,459 records published in 2018 in 119 unique journals. Section editors jointly filtered the list of candidates down to 14 nominations. The 14 candidate best papers were then ranked by a group of eight external reviewers. Four papers, representing different international groups and journals, were selected as the best papers by consensus of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) Yearbook editorial board.ConclusionsThe fields of sensors, signals, and imaging informatics have rapidly evolved with the application of novel artificial intelligence/machine learning techniques. Studies have been able to discover hidden patterns and integrate different types of data towards improving diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes. However, the quality of papers varied widely without clear reporting standards for these types of models. Nevertheless, a number of papers have demonstrated useful techniques to improve the generalizability, interpretability, and reproducibility of increasingly sophisticated models

Optical waveguide sensors
An overview of the field of optical waveguide sensors is presented. Some emphasis is laid on the development of a single scheme under which the diversity of sensor principles can be arranged. First three types of sensors are distinguished: intrinsic, extrinsic and active. Next, two steps are distinguished in the sensing process: the physical alteration of the waveguide (via geometrical and/or materials effects) and the effect thereof on the guided light (changing phase and/or amplitude of the light modes). The diversity and common features of the field of optical waveguide sensors are demonstrated with the help of many examples.\ud

Giving neurons to sensors. QoS management in wireless sensors networks
Public utilities services (gas, water and electricity)
have been traditionally automated with several technologies. The
main functions that these technologies must support are AMR,
Automated Meter Reading, and SCADA, Supervisory Control
And Data Acquisition. Most meter manufacturers provide devices
with Bluetoothr or ZigBeeTM communication features. This characteristic
has allowed the inclusion of wireless sensor networks
(WSN) in these systems. Once WSNs have appeared in such
a scenario, real-time AMR and SCADA applications can be
developed with low cost. Data must be routed from every meter to
a base station. This paper describes the use of a novel QoS-driven
routing algorithm, named SIR: Sensor Intelligence Routing, over
a network of meters. An arti cial neural network is introduced
in every node to manage the routes that data have to follow. The
resulting system is named Intelligent Wireless Sensor Network
(IWSN)

Rapid Fabrication of Smart Tooling with Embedded Sensors by Casting in Molds Made by Three Dimensional Printing
This paper is to investigate the feasibility of constructing “smart tooling” by embedding thin film
sensors, specifically, thin film thermocouples (TFTC) in castings made by molds formed by 3
Dimensional Printing (3DP). This study investigates whether thin film sensors can effectively be
cast into larger metal structures and if the sensors survive the casting process. The investigation
includes making 3DP molds to produce cast lap joint test bars of aluminum A356 and
electroplated nickel to characterize by mechanical testing to find the best process conditions to
maximize bond strength between the embedded thin film sensors and the cast material. Lastly
molds were made and embedded sensors were placed inside the mold for casting. Some of the
embedded sensors survived the casting process. In-situ monitoring of casting process with the
embedded sensors was accomplished.Mechanical Engineerin
