Categorical Comprehensions and Recursion
A new categorical setting is defined in order to characterize the
subrecursive classes belonging to complexity hierarchies. This is achieved by
means of coercion functors over a symmetric monoidal category endowed with
certain recursion schemes that imitate the bounded recursion scheme. This gives
a categorical counterpart of generalized safe composition and safe recursion.Comment: Comments are welcom
African-American vernacular english: A descriptive Analysis of the Comedy of Steve Harvey
Stand-up comedy is one of the most representative forms of entertainment in the U.S. It plays a big role in the construction of identity of the various communities. It is the place where comedians can openly discuss about sensitive topics related to culture, such as racism, politics and religion. For minority groups such as African-Americans, it is a suitable environment to be honest and straightforward about social injustices. Humor is the channel through which comedians have been able to address these injustices and thus break the barrier of discomfort. African-Americans expose these topics using their language to affirm their identities, to promote pride for their community and to differentiate themselves from mainstream society. Based on this, the present study aims to describe and analyze the grammatical features as well as the rhetorical strategies that comedians such as Steve Harvey employ to build social identity.
The Present Perfect and the Pluperfect as evidentials in the spanish spoken in Quito: A Contrastive Analysis between speakers’ perception and production
The present perfect (pretérito perfecto compuesto in Spanish) is the most widely used
verb tense in the Spanish language. Its uses vary greatly throughout the Iberian Peninsula and
the Hispanic regions of Latin America. Even though the present perfect can adopt some values
that are generalized to the whole population that speaks the language, there are also other more
innovative values that this tense has acquired in certain regions due to the contact with
indigenous languages. Amongst these innovative values, the use of the present perfect as an
evidential marker in Andean Spanish stands out. As for the pluperfect (pretérito
pluscuamperfecto in Spanish), it is a tense that is interconnected with the present perfect and
the preterite indicative (pretérito perfecto simple in Spanish) and, therefore, can alternate uses
with these two tenses in some dialectical variations of the language. Hence, it can also occur
that the pluperfect be used as an evidential in Andean Spanish. This thesis aims at showing
how native speakers of the Andean dialect of Spanish that is spoken in Quito, the capital of
Ecuador, perceive the present perfect and the pluperfect when used with evidential values, and
how said speakers produce the tenses inside the scope of evidentiality
Subjetivaciones contemporáneas: Alain Badiou y Jean-Luc Marion
Despite the death of the Subject during the second half of the 20th century, both Marion and Badiou maintain this category at the centre of their philosophies. However, in order to do so, they abandon its metaphysical determinations of principle and foundation to displace it within a secondary position of Subject of an event. Thus, the Subject as a substance is replaced by a process of subjectivation that responds to an event that since ever calls it. We show in this text that this apostolic structure of the contemporary Subject has its deep roots in a dissenting reading of Descartes, if we accept to listen, with Derrida, all the polyphonic richness of philosophical texts.
Conciliating conservation and development in an Amazonian Biosphere Reserve, Ecuador ?
Biosphere reserves are protected areas with extraordinary natural and cultural values, conceived as places for reconciliation between conservation and development. The Sumaco Biosphere Reserve (SBR), located in the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon basin is the home of local indigenous communities which have lived in this area for centuries carrying out different subsistence activities (e.g. shifting cultivation, hunting, fishing, and home gardening). During the past decades, tourism initiatives have been implemented as strategies to promote environmental conservation and socio-economic development. In this research, the principal aspects of the management and governance of tourism was examined, as well as its contribution to biodiversity conservation and development. In-depth semi-structured interviews were used to get qualitative information from the main stakeholders. The study shows that tourism is perceived as an important sustainable alternative to mining, oil extraction and hydroelectric projects, which are currently seen as the main threats to conservation in the area. However, tourism in the Sumaco area also faces some problems, which are related to the lack of adequate management and governance strategies, the worst among them being illegality and informality triggering uncontrolled competition, lowering of prices, and decrease in the quality of services. Altogether, these factors could ultimately lead to the overall decline of the destination. To improve the sustainable development of tourism, more efforts on coordination between different sectors (e.g. environment, mining and oil, and tourism) and levels of governments (local, regional, and national) are needed
Propuesta De Un Modelo Alternativo De Funcionamiento Del Sistema Turístico
The present study shows an alternative proposal of operation of the tourist system from the perspective of mechanics and their coordinated, harmonious, and routine interrelation between its parts. This study was carried out based on the tourism systems proposed by Roberto Boullón, Neil Leiper, and the World Tourism Organization. The problems that affected the development of tourism in a society was analyzed. It established a systemicmechanical model of four parts rector of the tourist system, real and potential demand, geographical space, and offers tourist system which are interrelated to each other. All have the same importance, different objectives, and the same purpose to satisfy fully the needs for transportation, lodging, food and recreation of the actual and potential tourist demand. This is achieved through the coordinated and effective functioning of the servers and/or entrepreneurs of the geographic space and the vehicle that the tourist offers. Subsequently, it would help to improve and streamline their tourism services and products by adapting them to their needs and trends. This is with the aim of returning them to their place of residence. The present article emphasizes the importance of observing the tourist system as the basic unit in the development of the tourist industry. It states that the lack of understanding of its operation is what has not allowed this industry to develop fully around the world
Limitations of selective deltamethrin application for triatomine control in central coastal Ecuador
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This year-long study evaluated the effectiveness of a strategy involving selective deltamethrin spraying and community education for control of Chagas disease vectors in domestic units located in rural communities of coastal Ecuador.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Surveys for triatomines revealed peridomestic infestation with <it>Rhodnius ecuadoriensis </it>and <it>Panstrongylus howardi</it>, with infestation indices remaining high during the study (13%, 17%, and 10%, at initial, 6-month, and 12-month visits, respectively), which indicates a limitation of this strategy for triatomine population control. Infestation was found 6 and 12 months after spraying with deltamethrin. In addition, a large number of previously vector-free domestic units also were found infested at the 6- and 12-month surveys, which indicates new infestations by sylvatic triatomines. The predominance of young nymphs and adults suggests new infestation events, likely from sylvatic foci. In addition, infection with <it>Trypanosoma cruzi </it>was found in 65%, 21% and 29% at initial, 6-month and 12-month visits, respectively. All parasites isolated (n = 20) were identified as TcI.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>New vector control strategies need to be devised and evaluated for reduction of <it>T. cruzi </it>transmission in this region.</p
