Guiding peer conferences in the process of writing

Children can only become experienced writers by learning to use the writing process through opportunities to write and through modeling of strategies by their teacher. Children will especially benefit from questions and comments that are appropriate to make during a writing conference. This instruction may first take place during all-class conferences and eventually move to conferences between students (Graves, 1983). Conferences may have many purposes, but according to Graves (1994), the most basic purpose for a conference is to give the students time to share where they are in the writing process and to figure out where they are headed

Undergraduate Students’ Perceptions towards the Process of Writing

Writing process has been proven to be an effective approach to enhance students’ writing performance. The writing process consists of pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing. The writing process aids the students in developing ideas while writing, but it was claimed that students also face challenges during the process. Therefore, this current study aimed to investigate the students’ perceptions of the writing process and the challenges. The subjects taken were the first-year students of the English Educational program at the State University of Malang, in which 31 students of IC Writing Class were chosen. The perceptions were investigated through a survey study by distributing online questionnaires via Google Form. The questionnaire was divided into four aspects; pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing, which aimed at exploring the students’ perceptions during the writing process and its challenges. The findings of the study showed that the students experienced difficulties in the writing process. The most challenging stages they had were the pre-writing and revising stage. The students faced challenges in generating and structuring ideas, respectively. Meanwhile, the students claimed that drafting and editing were less challenging since they followed the preceding stage. Nonetheless, the students also believed that proofreading was a complex process in the editing stage. The results of this study will be beneficial for English teachers and future researchers to vary the teaching methodology and reflect a better analysis

CodeProcess Charts: Visualizing the Process of Writing Code

Instructors of computer programming courses evaluate student progress on code submissions, exams, and other activities. The evaluation of code submissions is typically a summative assessment that gives very little insight into the process the student used when designing and writing the code. Thus, a tool that offers instructors a view into how students actually write their code could have broad impacts on assessment, intervention, instructional design, and plagiarism detection. In this article we propose an interactive software tool with a novel visualization that includes both static and dynamic views of the process that students take to complete computer programming assignments. We report results of an exploratory think-aloud study in which instructors offer thoughts as to the utility and potential of the tool. In the think-aloud study, we observed that the instructors easily identified multiple coding strategies (or the lack of thereof), were able to recognize plagiarism, and noticed a clear need for wider dissemination of tools for visualizing the programming process.Peer reviewe

The Power of Poetic Praxis in the Literature of Pat Mora and Ana Castillo

Chicana literary work is predominantly characterized by poetry. Lyrical poetic phrases are interwoven into Chicanas’ short stories, novels, theoretical, and critical essays. Why poetry? What is distinct about poetry as a literary genre or the process of writing poetry that facilitates Chicanas’ self-expression? Various Chicana writers refer to the process of writing poetry as essential to the (trans)formation of identity and society. Poetry allows Chicanas to transform their own identities and to re-define the contours of the world by creating a new or distinct reality from which to act. Collectively, Chicana writers produce a corpus of literary work that is characterized by the commingling of poetry, theory, and criticism. In this article I illustrate that these three phenomena are inextricably linked and that theoretical and critical essays written by and about Chicanas often grow out of and through their more creative, poetic literary work. My analysis focuses primarily on two Chicana authors, Pat Mora and Ana Castillo, and examines how their poetry exemplifies and contextualizes some of their abstract claims and critical theories, as well as how the blending of poetry, theory, and criticism functions as a powerful tool to create socio-political change both in the academy and beyond

My senior thesis focuses on my process of moving from a student to a producer of children\u27s literature. I\u27ve compiled a story journal of ideas, read memoirs about authors and their writing processes, and chosen a story from my story journal to create my own picture book manuscript. My completed senior thesis will be composed of a final picture book manuscript, reflective paragraphs of my creative process, a portfolio that includes but is not limited to, drafts of my work, notes on a conference I attended with my mentor, and excerpts from my story journal

The Machine Starts: Computers as Collaborators in Writing

The penetration of digital technologies into the process of creating and disseminating narratives is no longer a new phenomenon, but perhaps what does still seem strange and far-fetched is the suggestion that machines are collaborators and authors in their own right. This paper examines an example of a computer-mediated narrative and suggests that not only does the machine exert its own agency in the process of writing, but this process has a long provenance from the ancient world, through the 20th century avant garde, and into contemporary technological futurism
