De Sint-Ermelindiskerk in Meldert (Hoegaarden, prov. Vlaams-Brabant). Archeologisch noodonderzoek en fysisch-antropologisch onderzoek

In het bestek voor binnenrestauratie, interieurherinrichting en aanleg van vloerverwarming in de Sint-Ermelindiskerk in Meldert werd een archeologische noodinterventie voorzien en gefinancierd. Dit maakte een kort (19-01 tot 05-03-2004) en noodgedwongen selectief onderzoek van het bodemarchief mogelijk, voordat het vernield werd. De opgegraven funderingen van vroegere kerkfases bevestigen het vermoeden dat de kerk ouder is dan dat de sterk verbouwde romaanse westertoren reeds laat uitschijnen. Ook de aanwezigheid van de Sint-Ermelindiskapel op het voormalige kerkhof rond de kerk, waar volgens de legende de vroegmiddeleeuwse heilige stierf, wijst op de mogelijk hoge ouderdom en het belang van de site

Gedrukte kaarten van Europa vóór Ortelius. Een toevoegsel

Deze bijdrage is een samenvattend en nader toegelicht overzicht van het in 1992 verschenen boek De oudste gedrukte Kaarten van Europa, Alphen aan den Rijn, Canaletto, 1992. Daarin worden veertig overzichtskaarten van Europa en zeven kaarten van Europa in de gestalte van een koninklijke vrouw (Virgo Europa) beschreven, afgebeeld en becommentarieerd. De veertig geografische kaarten stammen alle uit de periode van vóór Ortelius en zijn grotendeels veelbladig, met grote grafische bekwaamheid en kunstzinnigheid in hout of koper gegraveerd. Zij wijken echter aanmerkelijk van de werkelijkheid af vooral wat noord-Europa betreft. In dat opzicht was de kaart van Europa die Abraham Ortelius in 1570 in de eerste atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum opnam een grote verbetering. In de cartografische weergave van het Europese continent was daarom Ortelius’ kaart “Europae” het definitieve keerpunt.This article is a concise and elucidating survey of De oudste gedrukte Kaarten van Europa (The oldest printed maps of Europe), Alphen aan den Rijn, Canaletto, 1992. In this book forty general maps of Europe and seven maps of Europe in the shape of a royal lady (Virgo Europa) are described, depicted and supplied with comment. All forty geographical maps belong to the period before Ortelius. They are for the greater part in several sheets and engraved in wood or copper with much geographical and artistical skill. They rather differ, though, from reality, especially the northern part of Europe. In this respect the map of Europe, which Abraham Ortelius inserted in his first atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of 1570 meant a great improvement. The entrance to the guild chamber of the Amsterdam Guild of Surgeons

In the 17th and 18th centuries the entrance to the guild chamber of the Amsterdam Guild of Surgeons was located in the right corner-tower of the Waag on the Nieuwmarkt in Amsterdam. The surgeons entered their guild chamber through this door for guild meetings or to take surgical exams. The entrance also gave access to the anatomy theatre, the 'Theatrum Anatomicum', where anatomical dissections - anatomy lessons - took place. There was a bust of Hippocrates in the facade above the door, and the inscription 'Theatrum Anatomicum'. The series of 'anatomy lessons' reminds us of the famous paintings that were commissioned by the Surgeons' Guild. At the beginning of the 17th century, a skeleton was painted on the door in the gateway, and this marked the entrance to the Surgeons' Guild for almost 200 years. We examined, from a historical perspective, how the gateway to the guild chamber of the Amsterdam Guild of Surgeons was transformed over time.</p
