Konflikty społeczno‐przestrzenne jako nowy przedmiot badań geografii społecznej
Oddajemy do rąk Czytelnika kolejny tom z serii „Podstawowe idee i koncepcje w geografii” pt. Dorobek polskiej geografii po konferencji w Rydzynie. Ocena krytyczna. [...]
Publikacja została przygotowana w ramach projektu „Utworzenie nowych interdyscyplinarnych programów kształcenia w zakresie ekonomii ochrony środowiska (w języku polskim i angielskim) w Uniwersytecie Łódzkim” współfinansowanego ze środków funduszy norweskich i krajowych. Studies of technogenic soils in Poland: past, present, and future perspectives
For a long time, the soils covering areas strongly transformed by human were ignored in scientifi c
discourse. Also, practice did not care much about these soils because of their unproductivity. Only
the large post-mining areas reclaimed and transformed into a forest or agricultural land were more
interesting both for science and practice. In the case of post-mining areas the term “soilless land”
was used for a long time, especially in relation to areas which were not reclaimed. In this paper,
the past studies (until the end of 20th century) of technogenic soils in Poland were described. Technogenic
soils of urban and industrial areas appeared in scientifi c considerations in Poland in the
second half of the 20th century. In those times, soil properties on disposal sites were mainly investigated
as a basic information for further design of technical and biological reclamation on disposal
sites. Two Polish scientists should be emphasised as the world pioneers in concepts and studies of
technogenic soils: (1) Michał Strzemski, who proposed a classifi cation scheme for soils in urban and
industrial areas, as well as listed the tasks for future studies of these soils, and (2) Tadeusz Skawina,
who focused on the dynamic and directions of the soil-forming processes on the mine spoils in
the context of their reclamation. Moreover, studies of technogenic soils in the last two decades
were also shown in the paper. From the beginning of the 21st century the scientifi c research gained
momentum. Nowadays, Polish researchers have great achievements in studying technogenic soils,
including investigation of their properties, genesis, evolution, classifi cation, biological features etc.
Furthermore, we drew some outlines for future studies of Technosols
Intensification of sewage sludge composting
The effect of commercial enzymatic preparations on sewage sludge composting was studied. The process of composting was carried out in industrial conditions with addition of selected enzymatic preparations. The sludge was mineralized in aerobic conditions. It was found that when the tested preparations had been added, the mineralization of organic matter in the composted material was much improved. In a control prism in which no enzymatic preparations were added, more beneficial changes of factors that had an influence on fertilizing value were observed. The range of changes in the factors being analyzed show that the most intensive transformations are reported in the first 8 weeks of the process. After that period the intensity of transformations decreases significantly and differences in changes of the tested parameters are very small
Reclamation and Development of Geomechanically Transformed Land in the Konin-Turek Coal Basin
This overview article presents major forms of reclamation and development of external and internal spoil tips, which are formed during brown coal mining and from bottom ash dumped near open-pit mines and power stations. In the late 1970s, a new form of agricultural and forest recultivation was developed – the PAN model. According to the concept, crops and forest-forming plant species should be introduced to post-mining grounds immediately after the end of technical recultivation. Vegetation is a particularly reliable indicator of habitat properties and small changes taking place in nature undergoing recovery. Other bioindicators of the quality and health of newly formed soil include the biomass of microorganisms, their count, composition and enzymatic activity. In many countries the assessment of the influence of anthropogenic stress factors on the count of soil microorganisms has become one of key elements of obligatory inspection under environmental monitoring. In consequence of revitalisation of anthropogenically changed areas, biological life is restored within the period of at least 20–30 years. It is manifested by the development of microbial population and soil fauna
