    Data report for the Siple Coast (Antarctica) project

    This report presents data collected during three field seasons of glaciological studies in the Antarctica and describes the methods employed. The region investigated covers the mouths of Ice Streams B and C (the Siple Coast) and Crary Ice Rise on the Ross Ice Shelf. Measurements included in the report are as follows: surface velocity and deformation from repeated satellite geoceiver positions; surface topography from optical levelling; radar sounding of ice thickness; accumulation rates; near-surface densities and temperature profiles; and mapping from aerial photography

    Investigations of meltwater refreezing and density variations in the snowpack and firn within the percolation zone of the Greenland Ice Sheet

    The mass balance of polythermal ice masses is critically dependent on the proportion of surface-generated meltwater that subsequently refreezes in the snowpack and firn. In order to quantify this effect and to characterize its spatial variability, we measured near-surface (26%, resulting in a 32% increase in net accumulation. This 'seasonal densification' increased at lower elevations, rising to 47% 10 km closer to the ice-sheet margin at 1860 m a. s. l. Density/depth profiles from nine sites within 1 km2 at ∼1945 m a.s.l. reveal complex stratigraphies that change over short spatial scales and seasonally. We conclude that estimates of mass-balance change cannot be calculated solely from observed changes in surface elevation, but that near-surface densification must also be considered. However, predicting spatial and temporal variations in densification may not be straightforward. Further, the development of complex firn-density profiles both masks discernible annual layers in the near-surface firn and ice stratigraphy and is likely to introduce error into radar-derived estimates of surface elevation

    Surface Melting Drives Fluctuations in Airborne Radar Penetration in West Central Greenland

    Greenland Ice Sheet surface melting has increased since the 1990s, affecting the rheology and scattering properties of the near‐surface firn. We combine firn cores and modeled firn densities with 7 years of CryoVEx airborne Ku‐band (13.5 GHz) radar profiles to quantify the impact of melting on microwave radar penetration in West Central Greenland. Although annual layers are present in the Ku‐band radar profiles to depths up to 15 m below the ice sheet surface, fluctuations in summer melting strongly affect the degree of radar penetration. The extreme melting in 2012, for example, caused an abrupt 6.2 ± 2.4 m decrease in Ku‐band radar penetration. Nevertheless, retracking the radar echoes mitigates this effect, producing surface heights that agree to within 13.9 cm of coincident airborne laser measurements. We also examine 2 years of Ka‐band (34.5 GHz) airborne radar data and show that the degree of penetration is half that of coincident Ku‐band

    Advancements in Measuring and Modeling the Mechanical and Hydrological Properties of Snow and Firn: Multi-sensor Analysis, Integration, and Algorithm Development

    Estimating snow mechanical properties – such as elastic modulus, stiffness, and strength – is important for understanding how effectively a vehicle can travel over snow-covered terrain. Vehicle instrumentation data and observations of the snowpack are valuable for improving the estimates of winter vehicle performance. Combining in-situ and remotely-sensed snow observations, driver input, and vehicle performance sensors requires several techniques of data integration. I explored correlations between measurements spanning from millimeter to meter scales, beginning with the SnowMicroPenetrometer (SMP) and instruments applied to snow that were designed for measuring the load bearing capacity and the compressive and shear strengths of roads and soils. The spatial distribution of snow’s mechanical properties is still largely unknown. From this initial work, I determined that snow density remains a useful proxy for snowpack strength. To measure snow density, I applied multi-sensor electromagnetic methods. Using spatially distributed snowpack, terrain, and vegetation information developed in the subsequent chapters, I developed an over-snow vehicle performance model. To measure the vehicle performance, I joined driver and vehicle data in the coined Normalized Difference Mobility Index (NDMI). Then, I applied regression methods to distribute NDMI from spatial snow, terrain, and vegetation properties. Mobility prediction is useful for the strategic advancement of warfighting in cold regions. The security of water resources is climatologically inequitable and water stress causes international conflict. Water resources derived from snow are essential for modern societies in climates where snow is the predominant source of precipitation, such as the western United States. Snow water equivalent (SWE) is a critical parameter for yearly water supply forecasting and can be calculated by multiplying the snow depth by the snow density. In this work, I combined high-spatial resolution light detection and ranging (LiDAR) measured snow depths with ground-penetrating radar (GPR) measurements of two-way travel-time (TWT) to solve for snow density. Then using LiDAR derived terrain and vegetation features as predictors in a multiple linear regression, the density observations are distributed across the SnowEx 2020 study area at Grand Mesa, Colorado. The modeled density resolved detailed patterns that agree with the known interactions of snow with wind, terrain, and vegetation. The integration of radar and LiDAR sensors shows promise as a technique for estimating SWE across entire river basins and evaluating observational- or physics-based snow-density models. Accurate estimation of SWE is a means of water security. In our changing climate, snow and ice mass are being permanently lost from the cryosphere. Mass balance is an indicator of the (in)stability of glaciers and ice sheets. Surface mass balance (SMB) may be estimated by multiplying the thickness of any annual snowpack layer by its density. Though, unlike applications in seasonal snowpack, the ages of annual firn layers are unknown. To estimate SMB, I modeled the firn depth, density, and age using empirical and numerical approaches. The annual SMB history shows cyclical patterns representing the combination of atmospheric, oceanic, and anthropogenic climate forcing, which may serve as evaluation or assimilation data in climate model retrievals of SMB. The advancements made using the SMP, multi-channel GPR arrays, and airborne LiDAR and radar within this dissertation have made it possible to spatially estimate the snow depth, density, and water equivalent in seasonal snow, glaciers, and ice sheets. Open access, process automation, repeatability, and accuracy were key design parameters of the analyses and algorithms developed within this work. The many different campaigns, objectives, and outcomes composing this research documented the successes and limitations of multi-sensor estimation techniques for a broad range of cryosphere applications

    Ice Flow Impacts the Firn Structure of Greenland\u27s Percolation Zone

    One dimensional simulations of firn evolution neglect horizontal transport as the firn column moves down slope during burial. This approach is justifiable near Greenland\u27s ice divide, where ice flow is near vertical, but fidelity is lost in the percolation zone where horizontal ice flow advects the firn column through climate gradients. We simulate firn evolution processes under advection conditions using a transient, thermo-mechanically coupled model for firn densification and heat transfer with various schemes for meltwater penetration and refreezing. The simulations isolate processes in synthetic runs and investigate an ice core site and four transects of Greenland’s percolation zone. The impacts of advection on the development of firn density, temperature, and stratigraphy of melt features are quantified, and two dimensional simulations are compared against a 1D baseline. The advection process tends to increase the pore close off depth, reduce the heat content, and decrease the frequency of melt features with depth, by emplacing firn sourced from higher locations under increasingly warm and melt-affected surface conditions. Pore close off and temperature are mainly impacted in the lowermost 20 km of the percolation zone, the impacts vary around the ice sheet but can change the firn’s air content by 10s of percent. Ice flow can also have a substantial impact on the stratigraphy of melt features in the firn column, independent of changing melt frequency, even in locations where the air content and firn temperature are relatively unaffected by advection. Thus, this effect should be quantified in order to correctly interpret temporal changes in ice cores in regards to climate
