A review of the construction of hierarchical fuzzy systems

    No full text
Fuzzy rule-based systems are nowadays one of the most successful applications of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic. Most applications use a flat set of fuzzy rules. However, in complex applications with a large set of variables, it is not appropriate to define the system with a flat set of rules because, among other problems, the number of rules increases exponentially with the number of variables. Hierarchical fuzzy systems are one of the alternatives presented in the literature to overcome this problem. In this article we review the latest results related with this type of fuzzy system. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.Partial support of the European Community under the contract IST-2000-25069 is acknowledged.Peer Reviewe
