By the time young adults reach college environments, they are expected to actively engage with text in order to obtain meaning from text. As Brown and Campione (1990) indicated, the demands of a technologically advanced society require complex forms of literacy (p. 108) and that among other skills, educated individuals must be able to read critically and to clearly articulate in both written and oral language

Metacognitive Supports in Online Community College Learners

Community colleges provide educational, social and professional lifelines for students. Community college students are often characterized by their need to balance school amidst conflicting life needs, such as employment and family. As a result, many community college students struggle to find time to commit to on campus classes. Asynchronous online courses offer these students flexibility. Without the ability to self-regulate their learning, this mode of learning has been shown to be more challenging, resulting in students who succeed and persist in coursework less consistently. This quantitative, quasi experimental study involving 92 asynchronous online community college participants from the southeast, explores support structures designed to assist learners in developing effective self-regulation practice. The research combines a two-factor quasi experimental design comparing the use of training that incorporates cognitive modeling, self-reflective prompts and the combination of these elements to evaluate their effect on calibration ability and academic performance. Metacognitive awareness is used as a covariate. Results of this study showed no significant difference between treatment groups in regard to either calibration ability or academic performance based on the elements of the training intervention. Descriptive statistics combine with these results to both support and challenge existing research, and continued research and updates to heuristic practice are suggested

Reading is an indispensable tool in the academic world. Most, if not all, activities in varied collegiate courses entail the act of reading. There are many contributing factors that affect one’s ability to read and comprehend text materials effectively. Two of the many factors are the reader’s vocabulary size and their reading motivation. This study examined the relationship of the vocabulary size, reading strategies and the reading comprehension performance of college learners in a comprehensive university in the Philippines. A correlational analysis was employed to ascertain the relationship between the scores in the reading comprehension component of the course and the vocabulary levels tests by Nation [1]. The findings of this study hope to provide useful insights into the prediction of college learners’ reading performance and the teaching of vocabulary in the ESL context as well as the integration of learners’ reading motivation in the curriculum

This study aims at analyzing the writing anxiety of English students of an Islamic State College in East Java, Indonesia. This study described the levels, dominant type, and main factors of writing anxiety of the English students. Fifty English students at the fourth semester participated in this study. Two closed-ended questionnaires, Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) proposed by Cheng, and Causes of Writing Anxiety Inventory (CWAI) proposed by Rezaei and Jafari were employed to collect the data. The findings revealed that 54% of the students experienced high level of writing anxiety, 44% experienced moderate level of writing anxiety, and 2% experienced low level of writing anxiety. The dominant type of writing anxiety was cognitive writing anxiety, which is based on the highest mean among two other types of writing anxiety. Then there are four main factors that cause writing anxiety. They are linguistic difficulties, fear of teachers\u27 negative comments, insufficient writing practice, and time pressure

Developing instructional materials of English morphology for English department college-learners

    Get PDF
The role of knowledge on English Morphology for the students of English Language Education (henceforth ELE) cannot be neglected. However, the preliminary observations done by the researcher during the instructional process of English Morphology at the State College for Islamic Studies (STAIN) Kediri Indonesia, for three academic years shows that most of the students still get difficulty in understanding the course content.  The researcher, therefore, is of the opinion that the instructional materials used in the classes need to be developed. The adaptation version of Borg & Gall (1983) model of R & D  covering preliminary observation, designing preliminary product, expert validation, product revision, field testing or try out, and revision to produce final product is used to develop an instructional material on English Morphology. The products mostly concern on 1) the course content, 2) the exercises, and 3) the level of language difficulty or word choice. The researcher expects that the final product of this study could be used as a handbook for the students in studying English Morphology.
