    Geographic Spillover of Unionism

    Get PDF
Unionism in the United States is contagious; it spills out of coal mines and steel mills into other establishments in the neighborhood, like hospitals and supermarkets. The geographic spillover of unionism is documented here using a newly constructed establishment level data on unionism that is rich in geographic detail. A strong connection is found between unionism of health care establishments today and proximity to unionized coal mines and steel mills from the 1950s.

The design and development of an innovative simulator for an open loop system for extracting energy from flooded coal mines

Water source heat pumps, in comparison to air-to-air heat pumps, have significant advantage for heating or cooling applications due to the relatively regulated temperature of most water resources. In the UK, similar to many other countries, disused coal mines have untapped potential for low cost green energy due to the flooding of coal mines with water at reasonable warm temperature due to the availability of geothermal energy at different depths. This allows to use water source heat pumps in locations away from rivers and seas for heating and cooling applications. Extracting energy from flooded coal mines using water heat pumps with open loop systems is still relatively a new concept, but can provide much heating capacity due to eliminating the time needed for heat transfer between the external environment and the heating loop in case of closed loop systems. The use of real systems to conduct research could be an expensive task or impractical to users of the application such as the residents of the served building. On the other hand, computer simulation includes significant assumptions that might not be accurate in many real situations. In this paper, the authors have developed a small scale simulator to help in understanding such energy systems and to conduct research in this field for the benefit of researchers, educators and students within the applied and renewable energy field. The paper describes the detailed design, the complete prototype and initial assessment of the system using infrared thermography and temperature monitoring. The results show that the system has been found successful in conveying the concept of extracting energy from coal mines and to characterize the general performance

Effect of Application of Transient Electromagnetic Method in Detection of Water-Inrushing Structures in Coal Mines

AbstractInfluenced by topographical and geological conditions, it is difficult for research of mine hydrological geophysics to rapidly and accurately detect passages inducing flooding of mines from water-accumulating abandoned mines, to detect precisely small structures causing flooding of mines. Through the study of the key technical difficult problems of the application of transient electromagnetic method(TEM) in hydrogeological exploration in coal mines, the characteristics of TEM such as sensibility to low resistivity, high transverse resolution and high speed have been sufficiently utilized. New inversion technologies have been used to improve the precision of TEM detection. During many rescues of water flooding induced by water inrush in coal mines, TEM has rapidly and accurately located water-inrushing structures in coal mines. It gains time for emergency rescue in coal mines, has significant social and economical benefits. TEM technology has become an important means for water control exploration in coal mines and has optimistic prospect of application

Ecological impact of coal mines on lichens: A case study at Moghla coal mines Kalakote (Rajouri), J&K

    Get PDF
The data on the frequency, density and abundance of the lichens growing around the Moghla Coal mines, Kalakote has been recorded and compared with lichens growing in a forest area away from the coal mines to work out effect of coal mines on the diversity and distribution of lichens. The data revealed that pollutants released by the open coal mining activities not only effected qualitative distribution but also have effect on the quantitative parameters. Over all 10 species of lichens belonging to 9 genera and 6 families have been recorded from the vicinity of coal mines as compared to 15 species, belonging to 9 genera and 7 families, recorded from the forest area

----------The article deals with some ecological and economic aspects of coal mines liquidation in Donbass. The liquidation is a long process that goes on even after the coal production stops. The ways of minimizing the negative consequences including hydrologic violations on coal mines are analysed. Key words: coal mines of Donbass, liquidation, negative consequences for coal mines. ---------

    Emergency escape systems

The Inquiry into the 1994 accident at Moura No.2 Colliery included in it\u27s findings that mine escape and rescue options for persons in underground coal mines were in need of review. The Inquiry recommended the establishment of industry working groups to report to the Queensland Chief Inspector of Coal Mines on matters including escape strategy and life support for escape from mines. One of these task groups examined issues relevant to self -escape from Australian underground coal mines and formulated recommendations and guidelines in response to the terms of reference and scope. A similar working group was also established in NSW by the Chief Inspector of Coal Mines to provide guidance notes for underground emergency escape systems. This paper covers the major points arising from the work of both the Queensland and New South Wales working groups and the results of a study of overseas escape strategies that was undertaken by the NSW working group
