    Guiding InfoGAN with Semi-Supervision

In this paper we propose a new semi-supervised GAN architecture (ss-InfoGAN) for image synthesis that leverages information from few labels (as little as 0.22%, max. 10% of the dataset) to learn semantically meaningful and controllable data representations where latent variables correspond to label categories. The architecture builds on Information Maximizing Generative Adversarial Networks (InfoGAN) and is shown to learn both continuous and categorical codes and achieves higher quality of synthetic samples compared to fully unsupervised settings. Furthermore, we show that using small amounts of labeled data speeds-up training convergence. The architecture maintains the ability to disentangle latent variables for which no labels are available. Finally, we contribute an information-theoretic reasoning on how introducing semi-supervision increases mutual information between synthetic and real data

The satire of antisemitism, in Proust as in Joyce, takes on a comic dimension that calls into question not just intolerance, but also the totalizing character of all ideology. Despite their differences in style and subject matter, both writers deploy a language that seeks to destabilize received ideas, even those of well-meaning people. This destabilization manifests itself in the multiplicity of discursive levels, so that even a critique of intolerance may treated ironicall

Lower-Middle-Class Masculinity and the Young Men’s Christian Association, 1844-1880

This article examines how old and new theological strains within nineteenth century Evangelicalism were adopted by British YMCAs to cater to the distinct wants and needs of their members in the decades immediately after their founding in 1844. YMCAs sought to address their members’ lower middle class educational, fraternal, and overall masculine requirements through the careful adoption of agencies of intellectual development. These programmes intersected with both Evangelical theology and the earthly self-improving aspirations of young commercial men. Although scholarship has devoted most of its attention to the British YMCA’s development of physical recreations in the nineteenth century, gymnasiums and athletic clubs did not become commonplace until the end of the century. Their acceptance within YMCA circles was facilitated by the success of these earlier YMCA programs that continued to provide opportunities for lower middle class masculine maturation until well into the twentieth century.

A Model of Hierarchical Professionals: Cooperation and Conflict between Anesthesiologists and CRNAs

This paper examines a labor market with two professional groups both cooperating and directly competing with each other: certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) and anesthesiologists (MDAs). We develop a model where the supply of MDAs endogenously determines (1) the earnings of CRNAs and MDAs, and (2) the extent of supervision of CRNAs by MDAs. We also analyze how MDAs may lobby to limit the scope of practice of CRNAs, and the resulting market equilibrium. Our theoretical model can be applied to the analysis of relationships between other hierarchical professionals with overlapping responsibilities, such as nurse practitioners and primary care physicians.
