Job-search Incentives From Labour Market Programs - an Empirical Analysis

    Get PDF
In this paper we examine whether the prospect of compulsory programme participation motivates individuals to leave the unemployment insurance (UI) system prior to participation. We analyze data from the Danish labour market. Here a series of reforms have enforced program participation and gradually restricted the duration of unemployment before individuals must enroll into programmes. However, there is substantial heterogeneity in enrollment probabilities. If individuals want to avoid participation and observe the heterogeneity in participation, this will also affect their search behaviour. We estimate a model for anticipatory effects of participation, allowing for heterogeneity, on search behaviour and find large significant effects from anticipation of enrollment on the exit probability out of unemployment.active labour market measures; hazard rates; unobserved heterogeneity

WikiPathways: Community Curation of Biological Pathways

    Get PDF
Assembling biological pathways from information in scientific literature and biological databases is a challenging task. Building a pathway requires domain knowledge from specialists in various biological research areas. Furthermore, research is generating new biological knowledge continuously, making pathway curation an ongoing and dynamic process. To facilitate this process we developed "WikiPathways":http://www.wikipathways.org/index.php/WikiPathways ^1^, a wiki where users can curate pathways, using an easy to use pathway drawing tool. WikiPathways currently has over 1200 registered users and contains more than 1300 pathways for various organisms, spanning human, mouse, zebrafish, fruit fly, worm, yeast, plants and bacteria. WikiPathways is entering a phase of rapid growth, incorporating new pathway resources and engaging diverse communities with unique pathway needs.

In this presentation we will provide an overview of the background, current state, and future of WikiPathways. We will highlight several approaches we take to improve community-based curation with WikiPathways. And we will provide context for this project within the larger shifts toward data sharing, data curation and new models for publication.

Which households use consumer credit in Europe?

Which households use consumer credit? This paper addresses the question using harmonized data from Eurostat’s EU-SILC survey for nine European countries in the period 2005-08. There is wide heterogeneity in participation in the consumer credit market, ranging from 15 to 46 per cent across countries. Most households relying on consumer credit are those whose head is young and well educated; they are large in size, revealing more pronounced consumption needs. According to life cycle theory, they use credit to increase their welfare by consumption smoothing. Moreover, they frequently have a current medium-high income as lenders prefer to grant loans to less risky borrowers. Nonetheless, a not negligible portion of those using credit, ranging between 8 and 16 per cent across countries, are poor. Consumer credit can also help in improving their welfare. However, poor households are more frequently delinquent. In 2008, between 2 and 11 per cent of all borrowers were in arrears; the same percentage among the poor is much higher, ranging from 7 to 25 per cent.consumer credit, repayment arrears, consumption smoothing

    Get PDF
This article defines some keys that make integrating technology into the curriculum a clear and simple process, underlining the strengths that teacher training should reflect on, both initial and lifelong learning. Taking into account methodological training, we try to find the balance where TPACK methodology (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) may be the answer to ICT teachers training. We need to go a step further in this matter, expanding our horizons to a training characterized by a self-initiative, based on our personal learning environment - PLE. Finally, it is defined a set of optimal qualities that every teacher should have aimed at integrating ICT to improve student learning

Colombia, the Resilient Survivor: DDR, Elusive Peace, and the Politics of Post-Conflict

This thesis aims to study Colombia’s post-conflict processes and peacemaking politics. Over the years, the numerous attempts at peace lacked solutions prioritizing a sustainable process for peacebuilding and post-conflict reconstruction. Yet since 2003, the government has implemented and prioritized a three-pronged policy known as Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) in an attempt to bundle the disparate elements that appear to be necessary components for long-term peace. Chapter one evaluates the turbulent history of peacemaking, focusing on the factors rendering peace elusive, examining the failed peace attempts, and chronologically arriving at DDR. Chapter two provides an in-depth analysis of the “R” in DDR through a theoretical framework of cooperation, its dimensions and logistics, and a compilation of narratives. It insists that Reintegration be more than a word or a theoretical concept. Chapter three analyzes the current peace negotiations and the winding road to a failed deadline through current events and political scandals. Taking into account the sociopolitical atmosphere into which DDR policies need to be implemented, the final chapter analyzes future scenarios and concludes: DDR processes are key to transition to peace; Reintegration is the most difficult and important aspect, as it involves the cooperation from all segments of society and leads to a long-lasting peace; DDR must consider the nation’s politics to be successfully implemented; and finally, whether the peace attempt with the FARC is yet another elusive peace attempt or whether it initiates a road to peace, Colombia will be able to achieve peace through community archipelagos of peace
