Few-Shot and Zero-Shot Learning for Historical Text Normalization

    Get PDF
Historical text normalization often relies on small training datasets. Recent work has shown that multi-task learning can lead to significant improvements by exploiting synergies with related datasets, but there has been no systematic study of different multi-task learning architectures. This paper evaluates 63~multi-task learning configurations for sequence-to-sequence-based historical text normalization across ten datasets from eight languages, using autoencoding, grapheme-to-phoneme mapping, and lemmatization as auxiliary tasks. We observe consistent, significant improvements across languages when training data for the target task is limited, but minimal or no improvements when training data is abundant. We also show that zero-shot learning outperforms the simple, but relatively strong, identity baseline.Comment: Accepted at DeepLo-201

This article shows that discrete or topological Kac–Moody groups defined over finite fields are in many cases 2-generated. We provide explicit bounds on the minimal number of generators for arbitrary Kac–Moody groups

Innovative potential in the small and medium-sized enterprises regional clusters in Russia

Accelerated development of small and medium-sized enterprises is necessary for dynamic regional growth. The fastest growth of small and medium-sized enterprises takes place in clusters. However, clusters of small and medium-sized enterprises are usually engaged in the simplest activities, do not implement innovations. The purpose of the article is to identify and evaluate the innovative potential of existing clusters of small and medium-sized enterprises in the regions of Russia. A research method is the comparative analysis, trend and index analysis, case-method, methods of statistical information processing. The study found a low level of innovation activity in clusters of small and medium-sized enterprises. Their impact on the qualitative development of the regional economy is severely limited. The main reason is weak internal innovation potential and lack of integration with innovation generators. Technological entrepreneurship is developing poorly. The size of the cluster of small and medium-sized enterprises is insufficient to form the infrastructure and elements of the innovation system. Innovative institutions can be formally included in the cluster, but there is no real interaction. Consequently, existing clusters of small and medium-sized enterprises solve only a limited number of specific tasks. Objective advantages of the cluster (positive effects of territorial concentration, diffusion of innovations, collective interactions) need to be complemented by elements of a regional innovation system. The development of the innovative potential of clusters of small and medium-sized enterprises requires interaction with the research and development sector, development institutions, the state, and public organizations. In addition, specific support is required for innovative activity of clusters of small and medium-sized enterprises. Under these conditions, clusters of small and medium-sized enterprises can positively affect the quality of economic growth in the territories

In vitro and in vivo analysis of the assembly of the non-collagenous tectorial membrane matrix

Alpha- and beta-tectorin (Tecta and Tectb) are major non-collagenous components of the tectorial membrane (TM). The presence of a zona pellucida (ZP) domain in both tectorins suggests that Tecta and Tectb can form hetero- or homopolymers. It is unclear, however, how these proteins assemble to form the TM matrix. The mechanisms of apical targeting, secretion and processing of the tectorins are also unexplored. I used fluorescently-tagged tectorin constructs for stable transfection into polarised epithelial MDCK cells or transient expression in mouse cochlear cultures to develop an in vitro model of TM matrix assembly. Significant amounts of matrix were not observed with stable tectorin expression in monolayer cultures of MDCK cells. In contrast, I observed substantial amounts of dense extracellular matrix on the apical surfaces of outgrowth zone cells when cochlear cultures were transiently transfected with either Tecta or Tectb. When ectopically expressed in hair cells, Tecta and Tectb locate to the distal tips of the hair bundle. To study the role of the inner-ear protein Ceacam16 in hearing, we generated a Ceacam16 functional null mouse model. The Ceacam16 gene was inactivated by targeted replacement of exons 2-5 with the bacterial lacZ gene. β-gal staining I performed reveals that Ceacam16 is expressed in the epithelial cells of the spiral limbus and inner sulcus, and in both the pillar cells and Deiter’s cells. I first detected the presence of Ceacam16 in the TM at P12, four days before the defined striated-sheet matrix is observed. Transmission electron microscopy reveals a complete loss of striated-sheet matrix in Ceacam16 null mice in comparison to the wild-type. The results of this thesis suggest neonatal mouse cochlear cultures as a model for studying tectorin-based extracellular matrix production and also reveal that Ceacam16 is required for normal formation and/or maintenance of striated-sheet matrix

On some pro-p groups from infinite-dimensional Lie theory

    Get PDF
We study some pro-p-groups arising from infinite-dimensional Lie theory. The starting point is incomplete Kac–Moody groups over finite fields. There are various completion procedures always providing locally pro-p groups. We show topological finite generation for their pro-p Sylow subgroups in most cases, whatever the (algebraic, geometric or representation-theoretic) completion. This implies abstract simplicity for complete Kac–Moody groups and provides identifications of the pro-p groups obtained from the same incomplete group. We also discuss the question of (non-)linearity of these pro-p groups

The Assessment of Corporate Social Performance Effectiveness: Russian Case

    Get PDF
The research is devoted to a problem of assessment the effectiveness of social investments and Corporate Social Performance (CSP). We offer the original methodological approach to assess the effectiveness of CSP and social investments based on the conducted analysis. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used in the research. In our approach the effectiveness combines: the result (effect) of actions depend on goals that were set, comparison of the result and recourses invested (economy), comparison of goal setting and problems, including social problems, that can be solved (advisability). Moreover the approach considers the importance of both results for the subject and for the object of social investments (for business and for society). We focus on measurement not just social or economic effectiveness but social-economic performance. The methodological approach has been approved in the course of research included more than forty Russian companies. Approbation of the methodological approach proved the correlations between social investments costs and financial and reputation performance indicators. The offered methodological approach allows companies to realize self-assessment of CSP effectiveness, to highlight the priority departments and indicators of social investments, to improve corporate social strategy, to be prepared for Public Ratings / Contests on CSP. In addition, this methodological approach can be used for internal assessment of social investments effectiveness that can improve planning of rational social investments. The presented methodological approach of assessment of CSP effectiveness opens an opportunity to compare the effectiveness of CSP of different companies of a region or industry

The article is devoted to the study of some aspects of psychological and pedagogical support for the adaptation of future teachers. Objective: to determine the impact of the proposed strategies of psychological and pedagogical support on the ability of students to adapt. The “Adaptability” (Multilevel Personality Questionnaire) questionnaire by A. Maklakov and S. Chermianin was used in the study to diagnose students of the 1st-6th years of bachelor’s and master’s degree programs of higher education at the faculty of arts of a pedagogical higher education establishment. The results of the introduction of strategies of psycho-pedagogical support showed that students grow their ability to regulate their interaction with the environment, that there is an increase in social contacts, social activity and self-esteem. It has been proven that the introduction of the proposed strategies of pedagogical support at the faculty of the arts of a pedagogical higher education establishment has a direct impact on the ability of students to adapt.
