The joint role of trained, untrained, and observed actions at the origins of goal recognition

Recent findings across a variety of domains reveal the benefits of self-produced experience on object exploration, object knowledge, attention, and action perception. The influence of active experience may be particularly important in infancy, when motor development is undergoing great changes. Despite the importance of self-produced experience, we know that infants and young children are eventually able to gain knowledge through purely observational experience. In the current work, three-month-old infants were given experience with object-directed actions in one of three forms and their recognition of the goal of grasping actions was then assessed in a habituation paradigm. All infants were given the chance to manually interact with the toys without assistance (a difficult task for most three-month-olds). Two of the three groups were then given additional experience with object-directed actions, either through active training (in which Velcro mittens helped infants act more efficiently) or observational training. Findings support the conclusion that self-produced experience is uniquely informative for action perception and suggest that individual differences in spontaneous motor activity may interact with observational experience to inform action perception early in life.PostprintPeer reviewe

Magnetically Defined Qubits on 3D Topological Insulators

We explore potentials that break time-reversal symmetry to confine the surface states of 3D topological insulators into quantum wires and quantum dots. A magnetic domain wall on a ferromagnet insulator cap layer provides interfacial states predicted to show the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE). Here we show that confinement can also occur at magnetic domain heterostructures, with states extended in the inner domain, as well as interfacial QAHE states at the surrounding domain walls. The proposed geometry allows the isolation of the wire and dot from spurious circumventing surface states. For the quantum dots we find that highly spin-polarized quantized QAHE states at the dot edge constitute a promising candidate for quantum computing qubits.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Categorias para Análise do Clima Organizacional em Universidades

Este artigo apresenta um conjunto de categorias e seus respectivos componentes para analisar o clima organizacional em universidades. Considerando que os estudos sobre clima organizacional em universidades são raros, principalmente nas brasileiras, supõe-se que a essas categorias, com seus componentes seja fundamental para se obter feedback da instituição e do seu ambiente de trabalho. Podem também constituir um acervo de informações estratégicas para as instituições universitárias. Estas informações servirão, para desenvolver análises comparativas entre instituições similares e averiguar as diferenças existentes entre as organizações pesquisadas. Acredita-se ainda que as categorias e os componentes para analise do clima em universidades serão relevantes no sentido de ampliar o desenvolvimento científico na área da administração pública, principalmente no âmbito das universidades. Do ponto de vista prático, espera-se que as categorias de análise do clima organizacional, com seus componentes sirvam de referência aos dirigentes das instituições universitárias para identificar pontos fortes e fracos no âmbito das universidades

Organização Universitária: mudanças na administração e nas funções administrativas

Este artigo tem como objetivo enfocar a necessidade de mudanças no atual sistema de administração e nas funções administrativas nas universidades brasileiras. Estas, têm constantemente redefinido seus papéis, sobretudo, em função das pressões feitas pela sociedade. Em conseqüência dessa redefinição de papéis, novas habilidades e competências funcionais são exigidas para o exercício das funções administrativas. Nesse contexto de transformações, as universidades que não tomarem conhecimento das necessidades de mudança e não reagirem a essa realidade, comprometerão a sua própria sobrevivência. A superação de uma administração universitária tradicional terá que ceder lugar a uma realidade administrativa nova. Ele terá que refletir novas concepções da organização universitária como instituição multifuncional emergente em uma sociedade em transição

Regional Economic Policies: Four Country Cases

This paper presents four case studies of economies with well-developed regional policies.These include the European Union, Spain, Italy and Brazil. These cases have been chosen because of their relevance when studying regional problems in Colombia. In all of the cases regional policy has had a relatively poor perfomance, since regional disparities have not been significantly reduced. However, one could argue that disparities would have been larger without these policy iniciatives. Thus, the results highlight the difficulties in devoloping a successful regional policy.
