Production Associated to Rare Events in High Energy Hadron-Hadron Collisions
At very high energy the same universal relation between the multiparticle or
the transverse energy distribution associated to a rare event , and
the corresponding minimum bias distribution P, , or works for nucleus-nucleus collisions as well as
for hadron-hadron collisions. This suggests that asymptotically, all hadronic
processes are similar.Comment: 9 pages, 4 Postscript figure
A prototype of fine granularity lead-scintillating fiber calorimeter with imaging read out
The construction and tests performed on a smal prototype of lead-scintillating fiber calorimeter instrumented with multianode photomultipliers are reported. The prototype is 15 cm wide, 15 radiation lenghts deep and is made of 200 layers of 50 cm long fibers. One side of the calorimeter has been instrumented with an array of 3 × 5 multianode R8900-M16 Hamamatsu photomultipliers, each segmented with a matrix of 4 × 4 anodes. The read-out granularity is 240 pixels 11 × 11 mm 2 reading about 64 fibers each. They are interfaced to the 6 × 6 mm 2 pixelled photocade with truncated pyramid light guides made of BC-800 plastic, UV transparent. Moreover each photomultiplier provides also the OR information of the last 12 dynodes. This information can be useful for trigger purposes. The response of the individual anodes, their relative gain and cross-talk has been measured with a 404 nm picosecond laser illuminating only a few fibers on the opposite side of the read-out. We also present first results of the calorimeter response to cosmic rays and electron beam data collected at BTF facility in Frascati
Haematopoietic stem cell migration to the ischemic damaged kidney is not altered by manipulating the SDF-1/CXCR4-axis
Background. Haematopoietic stem cells (HSC) have been shown to migrate to the ischemic kidney. The factors that regulate the trafficking of HSC to the ischemic damaged kidney are not fully understood. The stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1)/CXCR4-axis has been identified as the central signalling axis regulating trafficking of HSC to the bone marrow. Therefore, we hypothesized that SDF-1/CXCR4 interactions are implicated in the migration of HSC to the injured kidney
Enhanced Healing of Diabetic Wounds by Topical Administration of Adipose Tissue-Derived Stromal Cells Overexpressing Stromal-Derived Factor-1: Biodistribution and Engraftment Analysis by Bioluminescent Imaging
Chronic ulcers represent a major health problem in diabetic patients resulting in pain and discomfort. Conventional therapy does not guarantee adequate wound repair. In diabetes, impaired healing is partly due to poor endothelial progenitor cells mobilisation and homing, with altered levels of the chemokine stromal-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) at the wound site. Adipose tissue-associated stromal cells (AT-SCs) can provide an accessible source of progenitor cells secreting proangiogenic factors and differentiating into endothelial-like cells. We demonstrated that topical administration of AT-SCs genetically modified ex vivo to overexpress SDF-1, promotes wound healing into diabetic mice. In particular, by in vivo bioluminescent imaging analysis, we monitored biodistribution and survival after transplantation of luciferase-expressing cells. In conclusion, this study indicates the therapeutic potential of AT-SCs administration in wound healing, through cell differentiation, enhanced cellular recruitment at the wound site, and paracrine effects associated with local growth-factors production
A Novel Insulin/Glucose Model after a Mixed-Meal Test in Patients with Type 1 Diabetes on Insulin Pump Therapy
Current closed-loop insulin delivery methods stem from sophisticated models of the glucose-insulin (G/I) system, mostly based on complex studies employing glucose tracer technology. We tested the performance of a new minimal model (GLUKINSLOOP 2.0) of the G/I system to characterize the glucose and insulin dynamics during multiple mixed meal tests (MMT) of different sizes in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) on insulin pump therapy (continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion, CSII). The GLUKINSLOOP 2.0 identified the G/I system, provided a close fit of the G/I time-courses and showed acceptable reproducibility of the G/I system parameters in repeated studies of identical and double-sized MMTs. This model can provide a fairly good and reproducible description of the G/I system in T1D patients on CSII, and it may be applied to create a bank of "virtual" patients. Our results might be relevant at improving the architecture of upcoming closed-loop CSII systems
The first level muon trigger in the central toroid of the ATLAS experiment
We present the design of the first level muon trigger in the central toroid of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A trigger is foreseen based on fast, finely segmented gaseous detectors, Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC), to unambiguously identify the interaction bunch crossing. We describe the detectors and the logic scheme of the trigger. © 1995
RoSunLand: A Sustainable Self-Construction Village for Emigrant African Workers in Italy
The paper regards a research, aimed to purpose an architectonic project to realize a self-construction village in a farming town, Rosarno, located in Calabria, that is the southernmost Italian region. The project is purposed in alternative to a temporary camp, realized by the army, after a the revolt of many African emigrants, who live in this area and work in the oranges plantations with scarce protection of their rights and forced to live inside old abandoned industrial buildings. The protest, determined by inhuman life and working conditions of these young Africans, however, did not find an appropriate solution by governative institutions, which have built a refugee camp in order to receive, but also to control them, relegating them away from the city. Our project proposal, RoSunLand, wants to be an alternative solution, capable to be expression of a culture, which accepts diversity as a humanizing wealth and to remind that work is one of most relevant social means to achieve dignity
Measurement of the transition form factor with the KLOE detector
A measurement of the vector to pseudoscalar conversion decay with the KLOE experiment is presented. A sample of signal
events was selected from a data set of 1.7 fb of collisions at
collected at the DANE collider. These
events were used to obtain the first measurement of the transition form factor
and a new measurement of the branching ratio of the
decay: . The result improves
significantly on previous measurements and is in agreement with theoretical
predictions.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures; matches published versio
