N=4 superconformal mechanics as a Non linear Realization

    Get PDF
An action for a superconformal particle is constructed using the non linear realization method for the group PSU(1,1|2), without introducing superfields. The connection between PSU(1,1|2) and black hole physics is discussed. The lagrangian contains six arbitrary constants and describes a non-BPS superconformal particle. The BPS case is obtained if a precise relation between the constants in the lagrangian is verified, which implies that the action becomes kappa-symmetric.Comment: new subection, references added and new acknowledgment

An experimental work has been carried out on prevention of fiseal bone bridges formation by means of interposing autologus periosteum graft, bringing up the following objetives: 1) To achieve a barrier which can prevent the communication between epiphyseal and metaphyseal vessels, and 2) To study the condrogenic potencial of periosteum. A total of 48 rabbits have been used, arranged in three series of four groups each, acording to the moment of sacrifice in the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 8 t h weeks. They were all operated on the right femur. In the control serie an extirpation of 1/3 of the outer and distal growth plate was carried out, while in the experimental series the created defect was filled up with a free periosteum graft. All the specimens were studied macroscopically, radiologically and histologically. As conclusions, the periosteum used as a free graft: 1) In the first weeks act like a pasive barrier in physeal lesions, 2) It has also condrogenic capacity in the first weeks and, 3) On large follow-up studies, the periosteum do not seems to be a efective material to prevent physeal bone bridges

A MegaCam Survey of Outer Halo Satellites. VI: The Spatially Resolved Star Formation History of the Carina Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

We present the spatially resolved star formation history (SFH) of the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy, obtained from deep, wide-field g,r imaging and a metallicity distribution from the literature. Our photometry covers 2\sim2 deg2^2, reaching up to 10\sim10 times the half-light radius of Carina with a completeness higher than 50%50\% at g24.5g\sim24.5, more than one magnitude fainter than the oldest turnoff. This is the first time a combination of depth and coverage of this quality has been used to derive the SFH of Carina, enabling us to trace its different populations with unprecedented accuracy. We find that Carina's SFH consists of two episodes well separated by a star formation temporal gap. These episodes occurred at old (>10>10 Gyr) and intermediate (22-88 Gyr) ages. Our measurements show that the old episode comprises the majority of the population, accounting for 54±5%54\pm5\% of the stellar mass within 1.31.3 times the King tidal radius, while the total stellar mass derived for Carina is 1.60±0.09×106M1.60\pm0.09\times 10^{6} M_{\rm{\odot}}, and the stellar mass-to-light ratio 1.8±0.21.8\pm0.2. The SFH derived is consistent with no recent star formation which hints that the observed blue plume is due to blue stragglers. We conclude that the SFH of Carina evolved independently of the tidal field of the Milky Way, since the frequency and duration of its star formation events do not correlate with its orbital parameters. This result is supported by the age/metallicity relation observed in Carina, and the gradients calculated indicating that outer regions are older and more metal poor.Comment: Accepted in ApJ (22 pages, 13 figures

The elliptic genus from split flows and Donaldson-Thomas invariants

We analyze a mixed ensemble of low charge D4-D2-D0 brane states on the quintic and show that these can be successfully enumerated using attractor flow tree techniques and Donaldson-Thomas invariants. In this low charge regime one needs to take into account worldsheet instanton corrections to the central charges, which is accomplished by making use of mirror symmetry. All the charges considered can be realized as fluxed D6-D2-D0 and anti-D6-D2-D0 pairs which we enumerate using DT invariants. Our procedure uses the low charge counterpart of the picture developed Denef and Moore. By establishing the existence of flow trees numerically and refining the index factorization scheme, we reproduce and improve some results obtained by Gaiotto, Strominger and Yin. Our results provide appealing evidence that the strong split flow tree conjecture holds and allows to compute exact results for an important sector of the theory. Our refined scheme for computing indices might shed some light on how to improve index computations for systems with larger charges.Comment: 37 pages, 12 figure

Estos resultados corroboran el gran potencial condrogénico del pericondrioFaced with the incapacity of spontaneous regeneration of deep and extensive lesions of the articular cartilage we studied the cartilaginous repair with pericondrium grafts taken from the chondro-costal region. Grafts were implanted with their condrogenic face over an osteochondral defect located at the surface of the patella. At the 8th week, the neocartilage formed had macroscopically and histologically, the same appearance as the normal hyaline cartilage, with no separation between the remaining cartilage and the neocartilage induced by the graft. These results corroborate the high chondrogenic potential of the perichondrium

Does the Chapman--Enskog expansion for sheared granular gases converge?

    Get PDF
The fundamental question addressed in this paper is whether the partial Chapman--Enskog expansion Pxy=k=0ηk(ux/y)2k+1P_{xy}=-\sum_{k=0}^\infty \eta_k ({\partial u_x}/{\partial y})^{2k+1} of the shear stress converges or not for a gas of inelastic hard spheres. By using a simple kinetic model it is shown that, in contrast to the elastic case, the above series does converge, the radius of convergence increasing with inelasticity. It is argued that this paradoxical conclusion is not an artifact of the kinetic model and can be understood in terms of the time evolution of the scaled shear rate in the uniform shear flow.Comment: 4 pages, 1 table, 2 figures; v2: minor changes,Fig. 2 redon

High quality optically active and integrable EuOOH films prepared by pulsed laser deposition

Rare-earth (RE)-Oxygen-Hydrogen compounds are versatile materials whose composition and properties can be significantly varied by changing the relative O and H contents. Among them hydrides and oxyhydrides have been thoroughly investigated due to its photochromic properties. Instead, research of RE-hydroxides and oxyhydroxides (RE-OH and RE-OOH) is scarce although they show promising properties as light emitters. However, their use and integration in solid state devices have been hindered so far because their usual chemical synthesis routes yield materials in bulk or powder configurations. In this work we demonstrate a physical deposition route based on pulsed laser deposition that results in the unprecedented preparation of high-quality Eu oxyhydroxide (EuOOH) thin films. The synthetized EuOOH films show a well-defined monoclinic structure, are optically active and show a robust red emission related to the intra-f transitions of the Eu3+ ions. The excellent quality of these crystalline films has allowed us to obtain relevant properties of the monoclinic EuOOH phase not previously reported such as its refractive index and its Raman spectrum, including the identification of the characteristic phonon modes. These novel EuOOH films have been prepared both on Si and fused silica substrates, and thus are ready for potential integration in solid state optoelectronic components and devicesThis work was funded by the Spanish Research Agency (AEI, Ministry of Research and Innovation) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under grants RTI2018-096498-B-I00, RTI2018-101020-B-I00, RTI2018-096918-B-C41 and PID2021-123190OB-I00; by the CSIC (PIE-202050E195 and project 2021AEP128IO); by the Regional Government of Madrid through TECHNOFUSION(III)CM ´ (S2018/EMT-4437); and by Comunidad de Madrid (Spain) multiannual agreement with UC3M, “Excelencia para el Profesorado Universitario” (EPUC3M14) - Fifth regional research plan 2016-2020. Nonlinear viscosity and velocity distribution function in a simple longitudinal flow

A compressible flow characterized by a velocity field ux(x,t)=ax/(1+at)u_x(x,t)=ax/(1+at) is analyzed by means of the Boltzmann equation and the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook kinetic model. The sign of the control parameter (the longitudinal deformation rate aa) distinguishes between an expansion (a>0a>0) and a condensation (a<0a<0) phenomenon. The temperature is a decreasing function of time in the former case, while it is an increasing function in the latter. The non-Newtonian behavior of the gas is described by a dimensionless nonlinear viscosity η(a)\eta^*(a^*), that depends on the dimensionless longitudinal rate aa^*. The Chapman-Enskog expansion of η\eta^* in powers of aa^* is seen to be only asymptotic (except in the case of Maxwell molecules). The velocity distribution function is also studied. At any value of aa^*, it exhibits an algebraic high-velocity tail that is responsible for the divergence of velocity moments. For sufficiently negative aa^*, moments of degree four and higher may diverge, while for positive aa^* the divergence occurs in moments of degree equal to or larger than eight.Comment: 18 pages (Revtex), including 5 figures (eps). Growth performance and clinicopathological analyses in lambs repetitively inoculated with aluminum-hydroxide containing vaccines or aluminum-hydroxide only

    Get PDF
Aluminum (Al) hydroxide is an effective adjuvant used in sheep vaccines. However, Al-adjuvants have been implicated as potential contributors to a severe wasting syndrome in sheep— the so-called ovine autoimmune-inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA syndrome). This work aimed to characterize the effects of the repetitive injection of Al-hydroxide containing products in lambs. Four flocks (Flocks 1–4; n = 21 each) kept under different conditions were studied. Three groups of seven lambs (Vaccine, Adjuvant-only, and Control) were established in each flock. Mild differences in average daily gain and fattening index were observed, indicating a reduced growth performance in Vaccine groups, likely related to short-term episodes of pyrexia and decreased daily intake. Clinical and hematological parameters remained within normal limits. Histology showed no significant differences between groups, although there was a tendency to present a higher frequency of hyperchromatic, shrunken neurons in the lumbar spinal cord in the Adjuvant-only group. Although Al-hydroxide was linked to granulomas at the injection site and behavioral changes in sheep, the results of the present experimental work indicate that injected Al-hydroxide is not enough to fully reproduce the wasting presentation of the ASIA syndrome. Other factors such as sex, breed, age, production system, diet or climate conditions could play a role

Morphology and characterisation of the relict facies on the internal continental shelf in the Gulf of Cadiz, between Ayamonte and Huelva (southern Iberian Peninsula)

The objectives of the present paper are the determination of the morphologic characteristics of the superficial Quaternary relict facies on the internal continental shelf in the Gulf of Cadiz, between Ayamonte and Huelva (southern Spain), their characterisation, and their evolution in the final phases of the last eustatic hemicycle. The study area extends from the mouth of the Guadiana River to the mouth of the Tinto-Odiel River, and from the 6 m isobath to the 56 m isobath. High-resolution seismic profiles (3.5 kHz and Geopulse, 175 J), sonographic profiles (SSS, 100 kHz), and bathymetric profiles (Echotrac sounder) were used in this study. Sediment samples were obtained using Van Veen and Shipek drags. Bathymetric, physiographic, lithologic and morphologic analyses were performed to determine the superficial sediment distribution, relict facies distribution, and thickness of the unconsolidated sediment cover. Analysis of the data obtained indicated that the relict facies beaches and coastal barriers associated with coastal spits located in the ancient outlets of the rivers. Relict facies were grouped into well-differentiated depths, indicating that their position on the continental shelf is influenced by the still-stands and the periods of rapid sea-level changes. The nature of the outcropping relict facies shows that their final configuration can be related to the shelf construction processes, as well as to the most important Holocene transgressive phases.
