We present DIVERSE (Device Independent Virtual Environments- Reconfigurable, Scalable, Extensible), which is a modular collection of complimentary software packages that we have developed to facilitate the creation of distributed operator-in-the-loop simulations. In DIVERSE we introduce a novel implementation of remote shared memory (distributed shared memory) that uses Internet Protocol (IP) networks. We also introduce a new method that automatically extends hardware drivers (not in the operating system kernel driver sense) into inter-process and Internet hardware services. Using DIVERSE, a program can display in a CAVE™, ImmersaDesk™, head mounted display (HMD), desktop or laptop without modification. We have developed a method of configuring user programs at run-time by loading dynamic shared objects (DSOs), in contrast to the more common practice of creating interpreted configuration languages. We find that by loading DSOs the development time, complexity and size of DIVERSE and DIVERSE user applications is significantly reduced. Configurations to support different I/O devices, device emulators, visual displays, and any component of a user application including interaction techniques, can be changed at run-time by loading different sets of DIVERSE DSOs. In addition, interpreted run-time configuration parsers have been implemented using DIVERSE DSOs; new ones can be created as needed. DIVERSE is free software, licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) and the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) licenses. We describe the DIVERSE architecture and demonstrate how DIVERSE was used in the development of a specific application, an operator-in-the-loop Navy ship-board crane simulator, which runs unmodified on a desktop computer and/or in a CAVE with motion base motion queuing

Thermo-reversible gels are a potential system for controlled drug delivery. These gels gel at a certain temperature, i.e. when at low temperatures behave as solutions and at specific temperatures behave as gels, increasing the residence time of the drug in the target. They are, therefore, presented as a promising bet for various routes of administration of drugs such as parenteral, ophthalmic, rectal and topical application. The aim of this study, was the development and characterization of four thermoreversible hydrogels using different polymer compositions: Poloxamer® F127; F127 with chitosan; F127 with carbomer® 940; F127 with xanthan gum. The gels were prepared based on the Cold method with some adaptations. The gels were then characterized in terms of viscosity, thermal analysis and general cytotoxicity with reference to the Saccharomyces cerevisiae model. In this study it was observed that a proportional increase in viscosity was observed with the increase in temperature. All gels behaved as solutions at 4 ° C and as gels at 37 ° C. The results of the thermal analysis showed the state transition through the obtained thermograms. The images obtained using SEM showed the presence of cavities / pores. Regarding the study of cytotoxicity, this study suggests gels do not present cytotoxicity in the model used. In conclusion, this experimental study reinforces the application of thermoreversible gels as a vehicle for controlled release of drugs, improving their efficacy. Further steps will be taken in the future, including the preparation of nanoparticles and lipid systems and their incorporation into the different thermoreversive gels. In order to corroborate these results, in vitro and in vivo permeation and adhesion studies as well as cytotoxicity should be performed using a model that includes other more complex cellular models

The work presented in this document is part of the project “AutoFocus: Adaptive Self-Improving Multi-Agent Systems" that is being developed at the research unit LabMAg, which objective is the implementation of multi-agent systems based on autonomous entities capable of self-optimized and adaptive behaviors. The notion of autonomic computation, like other notions that also imply proactive computation, is based on autonomous entities that actively work to achieve their objectives and have the ability to dynamically adjust to changes in their environment, constrained by time and resource limits. In the approach used by the AutoFocus project, that adaptation to change and the regulation of the agent's capabilities, result from the combination of cognitive aspects with emotional based aspects. The agent model de_ned and used by the AutoFocus project is the Agent Flow Model. The task that corresponded to the work presented in this document was to develop a platform for the Agent Flow Model. It was intended, with this platform, to provide a tool that enables the rapid deployment and monitoring of agents based on this model. The developed work consisted in the analysis and design, oriented to objects, implementation and testing of components of this platform
