Parental influences on high school student achievement and goals
The present study examined parental influences on educational and career goals of high school students. Data on educational and career goals from the Perceived Life Chances Interview were derived from 124 rural adolescents. One hundred of their mothers and 36 of their fathers completed the Inventory of Parental Influence which consists of five subscales of Parental Involvement/Help, Psychological Support, Parental Pressure, Pressure for Intellectual Development, and Time Management/Monitoring. Responses from the Perceived Life Chances Interview were qualitatively analyzed in order to derive categories that reflected the varying responses from participants. These categories served as dependent variables in a series of discriminant function and regression analyses that included the five subscales of the Inventory of Parental Influence, race, and gender as the predictor variables. It was evident from present and prior research that parental influences were found to be associated with adolescent achievement and career goals
Three Emission-Line Galaxies at z~2.4
We present Keck near-infrared and WIYN optical photometry of a sample of
galaxies detected by near-infrared narrowband imaging in the fields of quasar
metal absorption line systems at z~2.4. Wide separations (0.6-1.6/h Mpc) from
the quasars indicates that they are not directly responsible for the absorption
systems. From the color excess of the galaxies we derived line fluxes, star
formation rates, and equivalent widths. The data are consistent with one source
having an active nucleus and two sources containing regions of star formation.
The blue (R-K) colors for the sources suggest relatively lesser dust content.
We discuss possible projects using current wide-field infrared instruments,
which can cover an order of magnitude greater area with modest allocations of

Two New Gravitationally Lensed Double Quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We report the discoveries of the two-image gravitationally lensed quasars,
SDSS J0746+4403 and SDSS J1406+6126, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
(SDSS). SDSS J0746+4403, which will be included in our lens sample for
statistics and cosmology, has a source redshift of z_s=2.00, an estimated lens
redshift of z_l~0.3, and an image separation of 1.08". SDSS J1406+6126 has a
source redshift of z_s=2.13, a spectroscopically measured lens redshift of
z_l=0.27, and an image separation of 1.98". We find that the two quasar images
of SDSS J1406+6126 have different intervening MgII absorption strengths, which
are suggestive of large variations of absorbers on kpc scales. The positions
and fluxes of both the lensed quasar systems are easily reproduced by simple
mass models with reasonable parameter values. These objects bring to 18 the

Grazing Collisions of Black Holes via the Excision of Singularities
We present the first simulations of non-headon (grazing) collisions of binary
black holes in which the black hole singularities have been excised from the
computational domain. Initially two equal mass black holes are separated a
distance and with impact parameter . Initial data are
based on superposed, boosted (velocity ) solutions of single black
holes in Kerr-Schild coordinates. Both rotating and non-rotating black holes
are considered. The excised regions containing the singularities are specified
by following the dynamics of apparent horizons. Evolutions of up to are obtained in which two initially separate apparent horizons are present
for . At that time a single enveloping apparent horizon forms,
indicating that the holes have merged. Apparent horizon area estimates suggest
gravitational radiation of about 2.6% of the total mass. The evolutions end

Optically Selected BL Lacertae Candidates from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Seven
We present a sample of 723 optically selected BL Lac candidates from the SDSS
DR7 spectroscopic database encompassing 8250 deg^2 of sky; our sample
constitutes one of the largest uniform BL Lac samples yet derived. Each BL Lac
candidate has a high-quality SDSS spectrum from which we determine
spectroscopic redshifts for ~60% of the objects. Redshift lower limits are
estimated for the remaining objects utilizing the lack of host galaxy flux
contamination in their optical spectra; we find that objects lacking
spectroscopic redshifts are likely at systematically higher redshifts.
Approximately 80% of our BL Lac candidates match to a radio source in
FIRST/NVSS, and ~40% match to a ROSAT X-ray source. The homogeneous
multiwavelength coverage allows subdivision of the sample into 637 radio-loud
BL Lac candidates and 86 weak-featured radio-quiet objects. The radio-loud
objects broadly support the standard paradigm unifying BL Lac objects with
beamed radio galaxies. We propose that the majority of the radio-quiet objects
may be lower-redshift (z<2.2) analogs to high-redshift weak line quasars (i.e.,
AGN with unusually anemic broad emission line regions). These would constitute
the largest sample of such objects, being of similar size and complementary in
redshift to the samples of high-redshift weak line quasars previously
discovered by the SDSS. However, some fraction of the weak-featured radio-quiet
objects may instead populate a rare and extreme radio-weak tail of the much
larger radio-loud BL Lac population. Serendipitous discoveries of unusual white
dwarfs, high-redshift weak line quasars, and broad absorption line quasars with
extreme continuum dropoffs blueward of rest-frame 2800 Angstroms are also

Generic Tracking of Multiple Apparent Horizons with Level Flow
We report the development of the first apparent horizon locator capable of
finding multiple apparent horizons in a ``generic'' numerical black hole
spacetime. We use a level-flow method which, starting from a single arbitrary
initial trial surface, can undergo topology changes as it flows towards
disjoint apparent horizons if they are present. The level flow method has two
advantages: 1) The solution is independent of changes in the initial guess and
2) The solution can have multiple components. We illustrate our method of
locating apparent horizons by tracking horizon components in a short

An ontological approach to creating an Andean Weaving Knowledge Base
Andean textiles are products of one of the richest, oldest and continuous weaving traditions in the world. Understanding the knowledge and practice of textile production as a form of cultural heritage is particularly relevant in the Andean context due to erosion of clothing traditions, reuse of traditional textiles on commodities targeted at the tourism market, and loss of knowledge embedded in textile production. ``Weaving Communities of Practice'' was a pilot project that aimed to create a knowledge base of Andean weaving designed to contribute to curatorial practice and heritage policy. The research team gathered data on the chain of activities, instruments, resources, peoples, places and knowledge involved in the production of textiles, relating to over 700 textile samples. A major part of the project has been the modelling and representation of the knowledge of domain experts and information about the textile objects themselves in the form of an OWL ontology, and the development of a suite of search facilities to be supported by the ontology. This paper describes the research challenges faced in developing the ontology and search facilities, the methodology adopted, the design and implementation of the system, and the design and outcomes of a user evaluation of the system undertaken with a group of domain experts
A Survey of z>5.7 Quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey II: Discovery of Three Additional Quasars at z>6
We present the discovery of three new quasars at z>6 in 1300 deg^2 of SDSS
imaging data, J114816.64+525150.3 (z=6.43), J104845.05+463718.3 (z=6.23) and
J163033.90+401209.6 (z=6.05). The first two objects have weak Ly alpha emission
lines; their redshifts are determined from the positions of the Lyman break.
They are only accurate to 0.05 and could be affected by the presence of broad
absorption line systems. The last object has a Ly alpha strength more typical
of lower redshift quasars. Based on a sample of six quasars at z>5.7 that cover
2870 deg^2 presented in this paper and in Paper I, we estimate the comoving
density of luminous quasars at z 6 and M_{1450} < -26.8 to be (8 +/-
3)x10^{-10} Mpc^{-3} (for H_0 = 50 km/s/Mpc, Omega = 1). HST imaging of two
z>5.7 quasars and high-resolution ground-based images (seeing 0.4'') of three
additional z>5.7 quasars show that none of them is gravitationally lensed. The
luminosity distribution of the high-redshfit quasar sample suggests the bright
end slope of the quasar luminosity function at z 6 is shallower than Psi
L^{-3.5} (2-sigma), consistent with the absence of strongly lensed objects.Comment: AJ in press (Apr 2003), 26 pages, 9 figure
Evidence for Reionization at z ~ 6: Detection of a Gunn-Peterson Trough in a z=6.28 Quasar
We present moderate resolution Keck spectroscopy of quasars at z=5.82, 5.99
and 6.28, discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We find that the
Ly Alpha absorption in the spectra of these quasars evolves strongly with
redshift. To z~5.7, the Ly Alpha absorption evolves as expected from an
extrapolation from lower redshifts. However, in the highest redshift object,
SDSSp J103027.10+052455.0 (z=6.28), the average transmitted flux is
0.0038+-0.0026 times that of the continuum level over 8450 A < lambda < 8710 A
(5.95<z(abs)<6.16), consistent with zero flux. Thus the flux level drops by a
factor of >150, and is consistent with zero flux in the Ly Alpha forest region
immediately blueward of the Ly Alpha emission line, compared with a drop by a
factor of ~10 at z(abs)~5.3. A similar break is seen at Ly Beta; because of the
decreased oscillator strength of this transition, this allows us to put a
considerably stronger limit, tau(eff) > 20, on the optical depth to Ly Alpha
absorption at z=6.
This is a clear detection of a complete Gunn-Peterson trough, caused by
neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium. Even a small neutral hydrogen
fraction in the intergalactic medium would result in an undetectable flux in
the Ly Alpha forest region. Therefore, the existence of the Gunn-Peterson
trough by itself does not indicate that the quasar is observed prior to the
reionization epoch. However, the fast evolution of the mean absorption in these
high-redshift quasars suggests that the mean ionizing background along the line
of sight to this quasar has declined significantly from z~5 to 6, and the

Cauchy-perturbative matching and outer boundary conditions: computational studies
We present results from a new technique which allows extraction of
gravitational radiation information from a generic three-dimensional numerical
relativity code and provides stable outer boundary conditions. In our approach
we match the solution of a Cauchy evolution of the nonlinear Einstein field
equations to a set of one-dimensional linear equations obtained through
perturbation techniques over a curved background. We discuss the validity of
this approach in the case of linear and mildly nonlinear gravitational waves
and show how a numerical module developed for this purpose is able to provide
an accurate and numerically convergent description of the gravitational wave
propagation and a stable numerical evolution.Comment: 20 pages, RevTe
