Herbicide-resistant weeds : from research and knowledge to future needs
Synthetic herbicides have been used globally to control weeds in major field crops. This has imposed a strong selection for any trait that enables plant populations to survive and reproduce in the presence of the herbicide. Herbicide resistance in weeds must be minimized because it is a major limiting factor to food security in global agriculture. This represents a huge challenge that will require great research efforts to develop control strategies as alternatives to the dominant and almost exclusive practice of weed control by herbicides. Weed scientists, plant ecologists and evolutionary biologists should join forces and work towards an improved and more integrated understanding of resistance across all scales. This approach will likely facilitate the design of innovative solutions to the global herbicide resistance challenge
A major radio outburst in III Zw 2 with an extremely inverted, millimeter-peaked spectrum
III Zw 2 is a spiral galaxy with an optical spectrum and faint extended radio
structure typical of a Seyfert galaxy, but also with an extremely variable,
blazar-like radio core. We have now discovered a new radio flare where the
source has brightened more than twenty-fold within less than two years. A
broad-band radio spectrum between 1.4 and 666 GHz shows a textbook-like
synchrotron spectrum peaking at 43 GHz, with a self-absorbed synchrotron
spectral index +2.5 at frequencies below 43 GHz and an optically thin spectral
index -0.75 at frequencies above 43 GHz. The outburst spectrum can be well
fitted by two homogenous, spherical components with equipartition sizes of 0.1
and 0.2 pc at 43 and 15 GHz, and with magnetic fields of 0.4 and 1 Gauss. VLBA
observations at 43 GHz confirm this double structure and these sizes. Time
scale arguments suggest that the emitting regions are shocks which are
continuously accelerating particles. This could be explained by a frustrated
jet scenario with very compact hotspots. Similar millimeter-peaked spectrum
(MPS) sources could have escaped our attention because of their low flux

Long-term morbidity and mortality following bloodstream infection: a systematic literature review
Bloodstream infection results in significant short-term morbidity and mortality. No literature review has studied the long-term outcome following a bloodstream infection. This PROSPERO registered systematic review evaluated studies, which measured the association of a bloodstream infection with long-term morbidity and mortality.Databases were systematically searched for studies of adult patients reporting morbidity and/or mortality one year or more following a bloodstream infection in comparison to a matched cohort without a bloodstream infection.Ten observational studies were included in the final analysis. Five studies assessed only mortality, two assessed morbidity and mortality and three studies assessed morbidity only. The one year mortality ranged from between 8 and 48% for patients with bloodstream infection. The pooled risk ratio of death at one year was significantly higher for patients with bloodstream infection when compared to the matched cohort (RR 4.04 [95% CI 1.84-8.87]).Bloodstream infection was associated with poor long-term outcome measured at one year when compared to matched controls. More evidence is needed to determine if this association is causative

What works in conservation? Using expert assessment of summarised evidence to identify practices that enhance natural pest control in agriculture.
This paper documents an exercise to synthesize and assess the best available scientific knowledge on the effectiveness of different farm practices at enhancing natural pest regulation in agriculture. It demonstrates a novel combination of three approaches to evidence synthesis-systematic literature search, collated synopsis and evidence assessment using an expert panel. These approaches follow a logical sequence moving from a large volume of disparate evidence to a simple, easily understandable answer for use in policy or practice. The example of natural pest regulation in agriculture was selected as a case study within two independent science-policy interface projects, one European and one British. A third funder, a private business, supported the final stage to translate the synthesized findings into a useful, simplified output for agronomists. As a whole, the case study showcases how a network of scientific knowledge holders and knowledge users can work together to improve the use of science in policy and practice. The process identified five practices with good evidence of a benefit to natural pest regulation, with the most beneficial being 'Combine trap and repellent crops in a push-pull system'. It highlights knowledge gaps, or potential research priorities, by showing practices considered important by stakeholders for which there is not enough evidence to make an assessment of effects on natural pest regulation, including 'Alter the timing of pesticide application.' Finally, the process identifies several important practices where the volume of evidence of effects on natural pest regulation was too large (>300 experimental studies) to be summarised with the resources available, and for which focused systematic reviews may be the best approach. The stem cell organisation, and the proliferative and gene expression profile of Barrett's epithelium, replicates pyloric-type gastric glands
Objective: Barrett's oesophagus shows appearances described as ‘intestinal metaplasia’, in structures called ‘crypts’ but do not typically display crypt architecture. Here, we investigate their relationship to gastric glands.
Methods: Cell proliferation and migration within Barrett's glands was assessed by Ki67 and iododeoxyuridine (IdU) labelling. Expression of mucin core proteins (MUC), trefoil family factor (TFF) peptides and LGR5 mRNA was determined by immunohistochemistry or by in situ hybridisation, and clonality was elucidated using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations combined with mucin histochemistry.
Results: Proliferation predominantly occurs in the middle of Barrett's glands, diminishing towards the surface and the base: IdU dynamics demonstrate bidirectional migration, similar to gastric glands. Distribution of MUC5AC, TFF1, MUC6 and TFF2 in Barrett's mirrors pyloric glands and is preserved in Barrett's dysplasia. MUC2-positive goblet cells are localised above the neck in Barrett's glands, and TFF3 is concentrated in the same region. LGR5 mRNA is detected in the middle of Barrett's glands suggesting a stem cell niche in this locale, similar to that in the gastric pylorus, and distinct from gastric intestinal metaplasia. Gastric and intestinal cell lineages within Barrett's glands are clonal, indicating derivation from a single stem cell.
Conclusions: Barrett's shows the proliferative and stem cell architecture, and pattern of gene expression of pyloric gastric glands, maintained by stem cells showing gastric and intestinal differentiation: neutral drift may suggest that intestinal differentiation advances with time, a concept critical for the understanding of the origin and development of Barrett's oesophagus
PEXO : a global modeling framework for nanosecond timing, microsecond astrometry, and μm/s radial velocities
54 pages, 2 tables, 19 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS, PEXO is available at https://github.com/phillippro/pexoThe ability to make independent detections of the signatures of exoplanets with complementary telescopes and instruments brings a new potential for robust identification of exoplanets and precision characterization. We introduce PEXO, a package for Precise EXOplanetology to facilitate the efficient modeling of timing, astrometry, and radial velocity data, which will benefit not only exoplanet science but also various astrophysical studies in general. PEXO is general enough to account for binary motion and stellar reflex motions induced by planetary companions and is precise enough to treat various relativistic effects both in the solar system and in the target system. We also model the post-Newtonian barycentric motion for future tests of general relativity in extrasolar systems. We benchmark PEXO with the pulsar timing package TEMPO2 and find that PEXO produces numerically similar results with timing precision of about 1 ns, space-based astrometry to a precision of 1{\mu}as, and radial velocity of 1 {\mu}m/s and improves on TEMPO2 for decade-long timing data of nearby targets, due to its consideration of third-order terms of Roemer delay. PEXO is able to avoid the bias introduced by decoupling the target system and the solar system and to account for the atmospheric effects which set a practical limit for ground-based radial velocities close to 1 cm/s. Considering the various caveats in barycentric correction and ancillary data required to realize cm/s modeling, we recommend the preservation of original observational data.
