    Automatic CAD-model Repair: Shell-Closure

    Shell-closure is critical to the repair of CAD-models described in the .STL file-format, the de facto solid freeform fabrication industry-standard. Polyhedral CAD-models that do not exhibit shell-closure, i.e. have cracks, holes, or gaps, do not constitute valid solids and frequently cause problems during fabrication. This paper describes a solution for achieving shell-closure of polyhedral CAD-models. The solution accommodates nonmanifold conditions, and guarantees orientable shells. There are several topologically ambiguous situations that might arise during the shell-closure process, and the solution applies intuitively pleasing heuristics in these cases.Mechanical Engineerin

    Stability of WISC-R Scores between Triennial Evaluations of Learning Disabled Students

    Recent studies of intelligence test score stability among learning disabled children have reported adequate stability when correlational and analysis of variance (ANOVA) techniques were used. However, less than adequate score stability has been found when individual scores were examined. The present study explores the test-retest stability of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-R) using three statistical methods: Pearson product-moment correlation, analysis of variance, and an examination of individual scores. Regression to the mean is also examined. While reasonably high levels of stability are concluded by the Pearson product-moment correlations, significant drops in Verbal and Full Scale IQ scores between administrations are revealed by the ANOVA and by the examination of individual scores in the 9, 10 year old age group. The discussion includes implications for educational programming and for methods of evaluation, including alternative approaches to reevaluations. Suggestions for further research are also presented

    Differential cAMP signaling at hippocampal output synapses

    cAMP is a critical second messenger involved in synaptic transmission and synaptic plasticity. Here, we show that activation of the adenylyl cyclase by forskolin and application of the cAMP-analog Sp-5,6-DCl-cBIMPS both mimicked and occluded tetanus-induced long-term potentiation (LTP) in subicular bursting neurons, but not in subicular regular firing cells. Furthermore, LTP in bursting cells was inhibited by protein kinase A (PKA) inhibitors Rp-8-CPT-cAMP and H-89. Variations in the degree of EPSC blockade by the low-affinity competitive AMPA receptor-antagonist {gamma}-d-glutamyl-glycine ({gamma}-DGG), analysis of the coefficient of variance as well as changes in short-term potentiation suggest an increase of glutamate concentration in the synaptic cleft after expression of LTP. We conclude that presynaptic LTP in bursting cells requires activation of PKA by a calcium-dependent adenylyl cyclase while LTP in regular firing cells is independent of elevated cAMP levels. Our results provide evidence for a differential role of cAMP in LTP at hippocampal output synapses

    Production of n-propyl acetate by reactive distillation : experimental and theoretical study

    First steps of the development of a catalytic reactive distillation process for the production of n-propyl acetate based on experiments and simulations are proposed. The kinetics for homogeneously (sulphuric acid) and heterogeneously (Amberlyst 15) catalysed reaction were investigated and the constants for a pseudo-homogeneous model are presented. Pilot plant experiments were performed using a homogeneous strong acid catalyst in a packed column. A top-column decanter is used to withdraw the aqueous phase and to reflux the organic phase. Simulation results are in good agreement with experimental data. Thermodynamics nonidealities are taken into account using VLE and LLE NRTL interaction parameters. Alcohol conversion and n-propyl acetate purity may be dramatically increased just by adding to the pilot plant a stripping section in an additional column: six different configurations are identified to achieve such a production. The startup is studied in order to determine the best strategy to achieve steady-state conditions. The strong influence of the composition of the initial charging in the decanter can be seen and an initial charging of the two-phase top product leads to the fastest startup

    Sound-Induced Flash Illusion is Resistant to Feedback Training

    A single flash accompanied by two auditory beeps tends to be perceived as two flashes (Shams et al. Nature 408:788, 2000, Cogn Brain Res 14:147–152, 2002). This phenomenon is known as ‘sound-induced flash illusion.’ Previous neuroimaging studies have shown that this illusion is correlated with modulation of activity in early visual cortical areas (Arden et al. Vision Res 43(23):2469–2478, 2003; Bhattacharya et al. NeuroReport 13:1727–1730, 2002; Shams et al. NeuroReport 12(17):3849–3852, 2001, Neurosci Lett 378(2):76–81, 2005; Watkins et al. Neuroimage 31:1247–1256, 2006, Neuroimage 37:572–578, 2007; Mishra et al. J Neurosci 27(15):4120–4131, 2007). We examined how robust the illusion is by testing whether the frequency of the illusion can be reduced by providing feedback. We found that the sound-induced flash illusion was resistant to feedback training, except when the amount of monetary reward was made dependent on accuracy in performance. However, even in the latter case the participants reported that they still perceived illusory two flashes even though they correctly reported single flash. Moreover, the feedback training effect seemed to disappear once the participants were no longer provided with feedback suggesting a short-lived refinement of discrimination between illusory and physical double flashes rather than vanishing of the illusory percept. These findings indicate that the effect of sound on the perceptual representation of visual stimuli is strong and robust to feedback training, and provide further evidence against decision factors accounting for the sound-induced flash illusion

    Investigation of hippocampal synaptic transmission and plasticity in mice deficient in the actin-binding protein Drebrin

    The dynamic regulation of the actin cytoskeleton plays a key role in controlling the structure and function of synapses. It is vital for activity-dependent modulation of synaptic transmission and long-term changes in synaptic morphology associated with memory consolidation. Several regulators of actin dynamics at the synapse have been identified, of which a salient one is the postsynaptic actin stabilising protein Drebrin (DBN). It has been suggested that DBN modulates neurotransmission and changes in dendritic spine morphology associated with synaptic plasticity. Given that a decrease in DBN levels is correlated with cognitive deficits associated with ageing and dementia, it was hypothesised that DBN protein abundance instructs the integrity and function of synapses. We created a novel DBN deficient mouse line. Analysis of gross brain and neuronal morphology revealed no phenotype in the absence of DBN. Electrophysiological recordings in acute hippocampal slices and primary hippocampal neuronal cultures showed that basal synaptic transmission, and both long-term and homeostatic synaptic plasticity were unchanged, suggesting that loss of DBN is not sufficient in inducing synapse dysfunction. We propose that the overall lack of changes in synaptic function and plasticity in DBN deficient mice may indicate robust compensatory mechanisms that safeguard cytoskeleton dynamics at the synapse

    Towards One Key to One Lock: Catalyst Modified Indium Oxide Nanoparticle Thin Film Sensor Array for Selective Gas Detection

    Homogeneous In2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) were self-assembled into thin film sensor arrays on a single chip, with further surface modification by noble metal catalysts. The NP film sensor arrays show clear current responses when exposed to different target gases, and both sensitivity and selectivity were greatly improved. Particularly, the sensors modified with Au, Pd, and Pt nanocatalysts demonstrated higher sensitivity to H2S, H-2 and CO, respectively, making the gas discrimination direct and simple, like one key to one lock . The particle size dependence of the noble metal modifiers to the sensitivity was further investigated by tuning the sputtering parameters. Three different trends of sensitivities were observed, each attributed to different mechanisms. The modified nanoparticle film sensor was also fabricated on flexible substrates and the sensing performance was investigated at different bending angles
