Solar power R and D for Air Force space requirements

The requirements for improved solar power system technology for DOD satellites are reported. It is shown that the technology is required in several areas including solar cells, array blanket technology, energy storage and power system operation, and regulation and control. It is further shown that as the missions become more critical to defence, military aspects such as survivability, hardening, and eventually defence must be addressed

Future Air Force space power needs

The requirements for future power for AF satellite mission vehicles, fall into two categories. The first category is in the 1 to 50 kW range for missions of a continuous nature such as communication, navigation, surveillance, data relay and meteorology. The second category is in the multi-megawatt range for either continuous or burst power durations and are for other than solar power sources. Requirements for longer life and survivability in varying degrees are there for all systems. While the power levels do not appear difficult to achieve in view of the large array developments pursued by NASA Space Station technology, the other military requirements are very challenging and continue to be system drivers. The development of solar cells arrays should be in conjunction with other power supply technologies such as regulation and control components and energy storage subsystems

Seeking Christian enculturation among Vietnamese Evangelicals

This thesis seeks enculturated traits which show potential for Christian enculturation in the larger Vietnamese culture through the voices of primary sources (through qualitative research) of Evangelical Christian Vietnamese and the voices of those adhering to indigenous ancestral worship practice. Schreiter’s contextual model, through cultural listening, attempts to create overt inculturation keys amenable to the Christian message, but such models have not been an aid to the problems surrounding ancestral veneration rites, which have existed in East Asia societies from antiquity, including Southern Vietnam. The approach in this research modifies his inculturation approach (which is forced to bring in foreign elements of acculturation) to a model of enculturation which seeks out extant traits within the culture by which to bridge to an historically mediated message of Jesus the Christ. To date, no research has been done among Vietnamese evangelicalism within anthropological disciplines (versus theological ones) in seeking answers to the conundrum of Evangelicalism and ancestral worship. A key ancestral worship ritual is examined through ethnographic description as embodied ritual among a representative sampling of Southern Vietnamese in the Mekong Delta regions. This model exposes evidence of enculturated dispositions of filial piety, that is, a filial habitus among non-Evangelicals and Vietnamese Evangelicals alike. This enculturated trait may be seen in the Evangelical ritual of the Lord’s Supper and aids in bridging the cultural gaps between Evangelical beliefs and indigenous pre-Christian practices. The filial habitus and the inculcated dispositions associated with it show potential for Christian Vietnamese communities to develop local theologies as a means of seeing Christian enculturation penetrate into the wider Vietnamese society

A Cubical Flat Torus Theorem and the Bounded Packing Property

We prove the bounded packing property for any abelian subgroup of a group acting properly and cocompactly on a CAT(0) cube complex. A main ingredient of the proof is a cubical flat torus theorem. Hyperon masses in nuclear matter

We analyze hyperon and nucleon mass shifts in nuclear matter using chiral perturbation theory. Expressions for the mass shifts that include strong interaction effects at leading order in the density are derived. Corrections to our results are suppressed by powers of the Fermi momentum divided by either the chiral symmetry breaking scale or the nucleon mass. Our work is relevant for neutron stars and for large hypernuclei

Electrical tree structures generated by the ab-initio discharge-avalanche model

Initially the discharge-avalanche model for electrical tree formation treated the local Poisson fields as being derived from the applied Laplace field via a modification factor that was regarded as a random variable in time and space. Recently we have removed this approximation by calculating the local Poisson fields from the space charge arrangement produced by discharges in the tree tubules and avalanches in the surrounding polymer. This “ab-initio” version of the model has now been fully implemented. The ac-cycle is divided into 16 time segments. In each time segment tube-discharges are allowed to occur if the potential difference along a tube is greater than an onset threshold. Positive space charge is regarded as being deposited on the tube walls in the form of positive ions. Negative charge is allowed to penetrate the polymer where it can be used to initiate avalanches and thereby generate damage. The avalanches compete with a field dependant mobility in rearranging the charge around the tree tips
