The publication output from nine research institutions from Berlin (Germany) was analysed and the share of open access for journal articles published in 2016 was determined. Journal articles whose authors are affiliated with at least one of the nine institutions were analysed. The data described here were retrieved from multiple bibliographic databases. Due to license terms raw data from individual databases cannot be provided for download. Data was aggregated, normalised and analysed with a Python script which is available at https://github.com/tuub/oa-eval (code documentation in English). For a detailed description of the retrieval process and the analysis steps see the report (https://doi.org/10.14279/depositonce-6866). Search queries and the respective download settings for these databases are included in the data file. The data is accompanied by a detailed description of the terminology used

The overall goal was to analyse the publication output from nine research institutions from Berlin (Germany) and determine the share of open access journal articles. Journal articles whose authors are affiliated with nine institutions were analysed. The data described here were retrieved from multiple bibliographic databases. Due to license terms raw data from single databases cannot be provided for download. Data was aggregated, normalised and analysed with help of a Python script available at https://github.com/tuub/oa-eval (code documentation in English). Search queries and download settings for these databases are documented in the (German) manual that accompanies the script.

The article gives a survey about the potential application of text and data mining (TDM) or similar techniques on the basis of given licence agreements for subscription-based electronic resources. It also resumes the debate about the supplemental licence amendments for TDM that has arisen over the introduction of Elsevier’s TDM Policy. Finally, it describes the current discussions about the possible implementation of copyright exemptions for TDM within the context of non-commercial scientific research.Peer Reviewe

In late summer 2016 the open access teams of the Freie UniversitĂ€t, the Humboldt-UniversitĂ€t and the Technische UniversitĂ€t Berlin started their plans for the international Open Access Week 2016. In a call for posters, open access projects from Berlin and Brandenburg were requested to present their activities in a poster exhibition. The publication documents the poster exhibition and panel discussion during the Open Access Week 2016. It contains all posters including abstracts and links to the original versions in print quality, supplemented by photos from the Wikimedia event

Multiphoton In Vivo Microscopy of Embryonic Thrombopoiesis Reveals the Generation of Platelets through Budding.

Platelets are generated by specialized cells called megakaryocytes (MKs). However, MK's origin and platelet release mode have remained incompletely understood. Here, we established direct visualization of embryonic thrombopoiesis in vivo by combining multiphoton intravital microscopy (MP-IVM) with a fluorescence switch reporter mouse model under control of the platelet factor 4 promoter (Pf4CreRosa26mTmG). Using this microscopy tool, we discovered that fetal liver MKs provide higher thrombopoietic activity than yolk sac MKs. Mechanistically, fetal platelets were released from MKs either by membrane buds or the formation of proplatelets, with the former constituting the key process. In E14.5 c-Myb-deficient embryos that lack definitive hematopoiesis, MK and platelet numbers were similar to wild-type embryos, indicating the independence of embryonic thrombopoiesis from definitive hematopoiesis at this stage of development. In summary, our novel MP-IVM protocol allows the characterization of thrombopoiesis with high spatio-temporal resolution in the mouse embryo and has identified membrane budding as the main mechanism of fetal platelet production
