    Pre-service health and physical education teachers’ obesity-related nutrition knowledge and food habits

    This study aimed to quantify the levels of nutrition knowledge of pre-service health and physical education teachers as well as their ability to provide suitable weight-based advice to overweight adolescents. The influence of degree progression, gender and their own food habits on knowledge and ability was also assessed. Pre-service health and physical educators (n=72) were surveyed at three consecutive points in their degree with a questionnaire designed to extract information on demographics, food habits, nutrition knowledge related to obesity and knowledge about obesity counselling. Degree progression resulted in improvements to nutrition knowledge, as expected. When surveyed just prior to degree completion, scores on repeated measures reflect inaccuracies in obesity related nutrition knowledge and the propensity to advocate inappropriate weight-control advice to future overweight students. Females had higher levels of obesity-related nutrition knowledge than males. Gender was also significantly associated with obesity counselling knowledge among students in their second and fourth years of study and with dieting behaviours in second- and third-year students, with female students more likely to diet for weight control than their male peers. These results identify the need for further research into methods of increasing nutrition knowledge and obesity counselling skills in pre-service health and physical education teachers

    Weight based stereotyping amongst pre-service health and physical educators

    The purpose of this study was to examine the fat stereotyping attitudes of pre-service health and physical educators towards overweight and obese children and to determine if these attitudes were influenced by gender or degree progression. Pre-service health and physical educators (n=38) completed the Fat Stereotypes Questionnaire and endorsed fat stereotyping attitudes on characteristics and attributes including laziness, attractiveness and friendship. Males and females exhibited differing attitudes during their second and third year of study with males associating happiness with thinness whereas females associated it with fatness. Attitudes towards obesity worsened longitudinally with degree progression. Thus, when fat stereotyping attitudes are held by pre-service health and physical educators they are influenced by progression of degree and gender. Further research is required to determine the effect that these attitudes have on the quality of teaching and learning provided to their students once they graduate

    Assessing the profesional competence of physical education teachers in Bengkulu Province: Examining the role of teacher characteristics

    The success of the physical education learning process is determined by the  teachers’ professional competence. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the level of professional competence of physical education teachers in Bengkulu Province, with the main objective being to describe and determine the level of professional competence of teachers and the differences based on several variables, namely gender, teaching location, and teaching experience. A quantitative descriptive method was implemented in this study to achieve the research objectives. The research sample was 49 physical education teachers in Bengkulu Province. Techniques and instruments for collecting research data were in the form of receipts which were distributed via GoogleForm. An Independent sample t-test was used to analyze data regarding differences in the professional competence of physical education teachers based on gender. Meanwhile, one-way ANOVA was used to analyze differences in the professional competence of physical education teachers based on teaching location and teaching experience. The results of this study indicated that physical education teachers in Bengkulu Province have a very high level of professional competence, and there were no differences in teachers' professional competence based on gender, teaching location, or teaching experience. The limitations of this research included the involvement of a relatively small number of samples, the restriction of samples to public schools, and a lack of diversity in the sample variations. For further research, it is advisable to involve a larger number of samples from private schools and islamic schools. It was also recommended that physical education teachers develop competence in conducting classroom action research

    The barriers to and facilitators of physical activity and sport for Oceania with Non-European, Non-Asian (ONENA) ancestry children and adolescents : A mixed studies systematic review

    Background: Participation in sport and physical activity (PA) leads to better overall health, increased life expectancy, and decreased mortality rates across the lifespan; however, there may be a range of individual, family, and community factors that influence PA participation among ONENA children and adolescents residing in the 22 Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICT) and Australia. This review aimed to synthesise existing quantitative and qualitative literature regarding barriers to and facilitators of PA and sport among ONENA youth. Methods: The literature was systematically searched to include studies reporting barriers to and facilitators of PA and sports participation among ONENA children and adolescents aged 0–18 years residing in the 22 PICT and Australia. Using a pre-established taxonomy based on the social-ecological model, a deductive analysis was performed. Quality appraisal was performed using the mixed methods appraisal tool. Results: Of 1388 articles, 14 studies were included, with 128 ONENA children and adolescent participants across the four qualitative studies; 156,581 ONENA children and adolescents across the seven quantitative studies; 801 parents, children, and adolescents in one quantitative study; and 642 parents in two quantitative studies. Of the 14 included studies, none were based in Australia and only 10 of the 22 PICT were reported as the participants’ residence: Palau, New Zealand, Tonga, Cook Islands, Kiribati, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and Fiji. Four studies reported barriers, and another four studies reported facilitators of PA and sport, with the remaining studies reporting both barriers and facilitators. Overall, there were more barriers reported (30 in total) than facilitators (27 in total). Conclusions: Research in this area is lacking, with ONENA youth living in Australia and 12 PICT not represented. Overall, there were a larger number of facilitators experienced at individual and interpersonal levels, while barriers were highest at the community level, with the policy level having facilitators and barriers equally represented. Programs that offer PA and sport participation options with embedded SDT-informed strategies for all family members; that are accessible through existing transport and related social, cultural, and physical infrastructure; and that are committed to communities through formal co-design partnerships are needed, to enhance the PA and sport participation of ONENA youth residing in PICT

    Situational coupling at the ruck and its effects on phase momentum and success in international men’s and women’s rugby sevens

    One of the most frequent contests for possession associated with rugby sevens is the ruck. There has been no research on the patterns of rucks in rugby sevens. The aim of this study was to examine the link between coupling at the ruck, phase momentum and success. Footage from all men’s (N=63) and women’s (N=35) IRB Sevens World Series Cup knockout matches played during 2014 were analysed. Situational coupling at the ruck was divided into four categories based on the location of players. These were wide rucks (4&0); mid to wide rucks (3&1); mid rucks (2&2) and foiled rucks for all other situations. Comparisons between winning and losing teams were examined. Winning women’s teams crossed the advantage line resulting in positive momentum significantly more than losing teams (W 64.37% v L 49.59%). Situational analysis identified that wide rucks were most commonly used. Winning women created significantly more positive momentum from wide rucks (W 59.49% v L 42.36%) and scored more tries from wide rucks (W 0.91 v L 0.26) and mid rucks (W 0.53 v L 0.2). Winning men showed that attacking from mid rucks led to positive phases (W 79.17% v L 54.6%). Winners also scored significantly more tries from wide rucks (W 0.69 v L 0.39). Positive phase momentum is associated with three or more passes in men’s rugby sevens and four or more passes in women’s rugby sevens. Phase momentum has been shown to be an important aspect of success in rugby sevens. Situational analysis has identified that wide rucks are most commonly used and winning women use wide rucks whilst winning men use mid rucks to gain positive phase momentum. This study may assist coaches in developing strategies for creating positive phases in rugby sevens

    Does physical activity mediate the associations between blue space and mental health? : a cross-sectional study in Australia

    Background Research has begun to examine whether blue space is beneficial to mental health. While results are promising, it is difficult to know which aspects of mental health or mental ill-health may benefit most. Physical activity has been proposed as one potential mechanism via which blue space may be associated with better mental health. However, very few studies have examined mechanisms. We examined associations between blue space proximity and a range of mental health outcomes and examined which of these associations were mediated by physical activity. Methods 350 participants (M=38.74, SD=14.92, 70% female) self-reported their weekly physical activity and completed measures of depression, anxiety, and psychological wellbeing. We then used GIS software to calculate blue space proximity (i.e., coastal and inland), and structural equation modelling with mediation paths to determine the role of physical activity in the associations between bluespace and mental health. Results Physical activity partially mediated the associations between coastal proximity and depression (β=0.02, 95% CI=0.001, 0.05), anxiety (β=0.03, 95% CI=0.01, 0.06), and wellbeing (β = −0.03, 95% CI=−0.08, −0.01), and fully mediated the associations between inland water proximity and depression (β=0.02, 95% CI=0.003, 0.05), anxiety (β=0.03, 95% CI=0.01, 0.07), and wellbeing (β = −0.03, 95% CI=−0.07, −0.01). Conclusion While physical activity appears to explain associations between inland blue space and mental health outcomes, it only partially explains the association between coastal blue space and mental health, suggesting other mechanisms may play a role and even inactive exposure may be beneficial

    A school-based intervention to promote physical activity among adolescent girls: Rationale, design, and baseline data from the Girls in Sport group randomised controlled trial

    Background: Physical activity levels decline markedly among girls during adolescence. School-based interventions that are multi-component in nature, simultaneously targeting curricular, school environment and policy, and community links, are a promising approach for promoting physical activity. This report describes the rationale, design and baseline data from the Girls in Sport group randomised trial, which aims to prevent the decline in moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) among adolescent girls. Methods/design: A community-based participatory research approach and action learning framework are used with measurements at baseline and 18-month follow-up. Within each intervention school, a committee develops an action plan aimed at meeting the primary objective (preventing the decline in accelerometer-derived MVPA). Academic partners and the State Department of Education and Training act as critical friends. Control schools continue with their usual school programming. 24 schools were matched then randomized into intervention (n = 12) and control (n = 12) groups. A total of 1518 girls (771 intervention and 747 control) completed baseline assessments (86% response rate). Useable accelerometer data (≥ 10 hrs/day on at least 3 days) were obtained from 79% of this sample (n = 1199). Randomisation resulted in no differences between intervention and control groups on any of the outcomes. The mean age (SE) of the sample was 13.6 (± 0.02) years and they spent less than 5% of their waking hours in MVPA (4.85 ± 0.06). Discussion: Girls in Sport will test the effectiveness of schools working towards the same goal, but developing individual, targeted interventions that bring about changes in curriculum, school environment and policy, and community links. By using community-based participatory research and an action learning framework in a secondary school setting, it aims to add to the body of literature on effective school-based interventions through promoting and sustaining increased physical activity participation among adolescent girls

    Sustainable access to data, products, services and software from the European seismological Research Infrastructures: the EPOS TCS Seismology

    Easy, efficient and comprehensive access to data, data products, scientific services and scientific software is a key ingredient in enabling research at the frontiers of science. Organizing this access across the European Research Infrastructures in the field of seismology, so that it best serves user needs, takes advantage of state-of-the-art ICT solutions, provides cross-domain interoperability, and is organizationally and financially sustainable in the long term, is the core challenge of the implementation phase of the Thematic Core Service (TCS) Seismology within the EPOS-IP project. Building upon the existing European-level infrastructures ORFEUS for seismological waveforms, EMSC for seismological products, and EFEHR for seismological hazard and risk information, and implementing a pilot Computational Earth Science service starting from the results of the VERCE project, the work within the EPOS-IP project focuses on improving and extending the existing services, aligning them with global developments, to at the end produce a well coordinated framework that is technically, organizationally, and financially integrated with the EPOS architecture. This framework needs to respect the roles and responsibilities of the underlying national research infrastructures that are the data owners and main providers of data and products, and allow for active input and feedback from the (scientific) user community. At the same time, it needs to remain flexible enough to cope with unavoidable challenges in the availability of resources and dynamics of contributors. The technical work during the next years is organized in four areas: - constructing the next generation software architecture for the European Integrated (waveform) Data Archive EIDA, developing advanced metadata and station information services, fully integrate strong motion waveforms and derived parametric engineering-domain data, and advancing the integration of mobile (temporary) networks and OBS deployments in EIDA; - further development and expansion of services to access seismological products of scientific interest as provided by the community by implementing a common collection and development (IT) platform, improvements in the earthquake information services e.g. by introducing more robust quality indicators and diversifying collection and dissemination mechanisms, as well as improving historical earthquake data services; - development of a comprehensive suite of earthquake hazard products, tools, and services harmonized on the European level and available through a common access platform, encompassing information on seismic sources, seismogenic faults, ground-motion prediction equations, geotechnical information, and strong-motion recordings in buildings, together with an interface to earthquake risk; - a portal implementation of computational seismology tools and services, specifically for seismic wave- form propagation in complex 3D media following the results of the VERCE project, and initiating the inclusion of further suitable codes on that portal in discussion with the community, forming the basis of EPOS computational earth science infrastructure. This will be accompanied by development and implementation of integrated and interoperable metadata structures, adequate and referencable persistent identifiers, and appropriate user access and authorization mecha- nisms.     EPOS Seismology services and their users

    The construction of seismological community services for the European Plate Observing System Research Infrastructure (EPOS) is by now well under way. A significant number of services are already operational, largely based on those existing at established institutions or collaborations like ORFEUS, EMSC, AHEAD and EFEHR, and more are being added to be ready for internal validation by late 2017. In this presentation we focus on a number of issues related to the interaction of the community of users with the services provided by the seismological part of the EPOS research infrastructure. How users interact with a service (and how satisfied they are with this interaction) is viewed as one important component of the validation of a service within EPOS, and certainly is key to the uptake of a service and from that also it’s attributed value. Within EPOS Seismology, the following aspects of user interaction have already surfaced: a) User identification (and potential tracking) versus ease-of-access and openness Requesting users to identify themselves when accessing a service provides various advantages to providers and users (e.g. quantifying & qualifying the service use, customization of services and interfaces, handling access rights and quotas), but may impact the ease of access and also shy away users who don’t wish to be identified for whatever reason. b) Service availability versus cost There is a clear and prominent connection between the availability of a service, both regarding uptime and capacity, and its operational cost (IT systems and personnel), and it is often not clear where to draw the line (and based on which considerations). In connection to that, how to best utilize third-party IT infrastructures (either commercial or public), and what the long-term cost implications of that might be, is equally open. c) Licensing and attribution The issue of intellectual property and associated licensing policies for data, products and services is only recently gaining more attention in the community. Whether at all, and if yes then how to license, is still diversely discussed, while on national level more and more legislative requirements create boundary conditions that need to be respected. Attribution (of service use and of data/product origin) is only one related aspect, but of high importance the scientific world. In EPOS Seismology we attempt to find common approaches to address the above issues, also closely co-ordinated to the developments across the other EPOS domains.     Does modifying competition affect the frequency of technical skills in junior rugby league?

    The technical demands of games can be affected by changing the number of players, pitch size and rules. This controlled trial compared the frequency of technical skills between a 'traditional' and newly introduced systematically 'modified' game of primary rugby league. A total of 475 primary rugby league players (Under 7s - 9s) were filmed playing traditional (n=49) and modified (n= 249) formats. Notational analysis examined the frequency of technical skills (e.g., number of passes) within 'traditional' and 'modified' games. At each age category, multivariate analysis of variance indicated the clear superiority of the 'modified' game for the frequency of technical skills (e.g., Under 7s total skill opportunities - 'traditional' = 342.9±47.0; 'modified' = 449.4±93.3, d=1.44, p<0.001). Systematically modifying the competitive game is an effective way to increase skill opportunities for children within rugby league. Future research should examine the outcomes of modifying games in optimizing skill development in youth sport
