Localised Voices in the globalised Amazon: challenges of civil society building in Ecuador
Civil society building efforts in Ecuador have provided the Achuar and Kichwas of the
Amazon with a voice. This is particularly relevant given the global significance of the
Amazon, which makes it essential that local voices are empowered to have a say in the
future of their local space. Civil society building efforts aim at empowering historically
excluded groups, leading to their political inclusion, as well as to an increase in their
decision-making power. The Amazonian indigenous movement demands autonomy, but
this has become unattainable due to the area’s insertion into the process of globalisation. In
response, the Amazonian indigenous movement has joined forces with counterhegemonic
global actors such as activists and environmental NGOs.
Donor support to the indigenous movement in the Ecuadorian Amazon empowered
indigenous leaders, who have challenged traditional economic development models in their
efforts to achieve Sumak Kawsay, or ‘the good life’. The resistance of the indigenous
movement of the Amazon to a developmental model that has not delivered on its promises
has inspired alternative solutions among post-development enthusiasts, academics and
activists. This case study of the Amazon in a global era shows how power relations play out
between the indigenous leadership and powerful external actors concerned with the
administration of the Amazon´s resources. Civil society building in the Amazon has
provided the platform for the expression of indigenous voices. Independently of whether
or not powerful groups agree with these visions, these voices have opened up the debate
on development alternatives

Tal como lo expresa su nombre el trabajo editado por Jennifer Bair está verdaderamente empujando las fronteras de la investigación en el ámbito de las cadenas productivas. El libro de Bair demuestra la profundidad a la que está llegando la investigación sobre la interrelación de sistemas productivos en una era de globalización desde varias perspectivas. Resulta primordial introducir este trabajo en el medio académico latinoamericano en donde los trabajos sobre cadenas provienen, más bien, desde las agencias de la cooperación internacional y caen en un simplismo tecnocrático. El trabajo de Bair es un excelente punto de partida que confirma que los estudios de cadenas productivas han alcanzado un desarrollo conceptual avanzado combinando aportes desde la sociología económica, la historia y el desarrollo económico
Transport and Spectroscopic Studies of the Effects of Fullerene Structure on the Efficiency and Lifetime of Polythiophene-based Solar Cells
Time-dependent measurements of both power conversion efficiency and
ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy have been observed for solar cell
blends containing the polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) with two
different functionalized C60 electron acceptor molecules: commercially
available [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) or [6,6]-phenyl C61
butyric acid octadecyl ester (PCBOD) produced in this laboratory. Efficiency
was found to decay with an exponential time dependence, while spectroscopic
features show saturating exponential behavior. Time constants extracted from
both types of measurements showed reasonable agreement for samples produced
from the same blend. In comparison to the PCBM samples, the stability of the
PCBOD blends was significantly enhanced, while both absorption and power

A Home Device for Vestibular Stimulation
The goal of this project, which was presented to the team by Kevin Maher (President of Advanced Therapeutic devices), was to develop a product prototype for safe, vestibular stimulation for children with developmental disabilities. Vestibular stimulation is a form of therapy that increases muscle coordination. It works by stimulating the canals and sacs within the inner ear that detect accelerations. The project targeted children from ages two to seven years old, under 48 inches tall, and less than 100 lbs. The production device also sought to differ from stimulation devices found in hospitals in a few respects: it would cost under 1700 and no more than 500 lb. The design met all of the requirements and had adequate safety for any child’s needs, but the team thought the design needed significant changes before it became a final product
The Changing Presentation of Choledochal Cyst Disease: An Incidental Diagnosis
Background. Choledochal cysts are uncommon biliary lesions. Due to the evolution of imaging and laparoscopic surgery, we sought to describe our last 3 years experience with the presentation and management of choledochal cysts in adults. Methods. A retrospective review of a prospectively established database of adults who were managed for primary choledochal cyst disease between 2005 and 2008 was performed. Results. Between 8/2005 and 8/2008, 14 adults were managed for primary choledochal cyst disease. The average age was 41 years (range 17–86) and 79% were female. Presentations included biliary sepsis (3), pancreatitis (2), abdominal pain (3), or painless jaundice (1). Three patients had the cyst found during laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and two had an incidental finding after CT scan for an unrelated issue. The length of stay for those who had the cyst removed was 7.8 days (range 5–11). There were no operative or post-operative complications. Conclusions. Over the last 3 years 36% of our patients with choledochal cysts presented after incidental finding, either during a laparoscopic operation or after a CT scan for an unrelated problem. Increasing utilization of laparoscopy and CT scan for abdominal complaints has lead to a change in the pattern of presentation
Tapping Fresh Currents: Fostering Early-Career Researchers in Transdisciplinary Water Governance Research
Water governance is an important, yet complex and contested field. A central challenge for researchers is to engage with multiple understandings and perspectives that can shape water governance, and to move towards more transdisciplinary approaches. These challenges are magnified for early-career researchers (ECRs), and while the need for transdisciplinary approaches and better support for ECRs is increasingly recognised, there remains a lack of understanding of how to achieve this within the wider research community. Thus, this paper investigates through an auto-ethnographic inquiry the practical experiences and challenges faced by a diverse group of ECRs engaging in water governance research. Reflecting on our own endeavours and relevant literature, we identify a range of path-finding experiences and challenges, and explore strategies employed by ECRs to navigate the 'uncharted waters' of evolving career pathways in water governance research. 'Communities of Practice' are identified as a promising opportunity to support ECRs by enhancing opportunities for reflection and learning. Overall, we argue that there is significant merit in enhancing the way in which water governance research is understood, and improving the means by which ECRs are supported to build capability and contribute in this field
Influence of functionalized fullerene structure on polymer photovoltaic degradation
The time dependence of device performance has been measured for photocells using blends containing the conjugated polymer, poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) with two different functionalized C60 electron acceptor molecules: commercially available [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) or [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid octadecyl ester (PCBOD) produced in this laboratory. Performance was characterized by the short-circuit current output of the devices, with the time dependence of PCBM samples typically degrading exponentially. Variations in the characteristic lifetime of the devices were observed to depend on the molar fraction of the electron acceptor molecules (calculated with respect to the MEH-PPV monomer fraction). In comparison to the PCBM samples, the stability of the PCBOD blends was significantly enhanced, with a one or two order of magnitude improvement. Corresponding spectroscopic data with similar time evolution as the transport measurements suggest an independent means for determining and understanding degradation mechanisms

A Delphi study of rescue and clinical subject matter experts on the extrication of patients following a motor vehicle collision
Background
Approximately 1.3 million people die each year globally as a direct result of motor vehicle collisions (MVCs). Following an MVC some patients will remain trapped in their vehicle; these patients have worse outcomes and may require extrication. Following new evidence, updated multidisciplinary guidance for extrication is needed.
Methods
This Delphi study has been developed, conducted and reported to CREDES standards. A literature review identified areas of expertise and appropriate individuals were recruited to a Steering Group. The Steering Group formulated initial statements for consideration. Stakeholder organisations were invited to identify subject matter experts (SMEs) from a rescue and clinical background (total 60). SMEs participated over three rounds via an online platform. Consensus for agreement / disagreement was set at 70%. At each stage SMEs could offer feedback on, or modification to the statements considered which was reviewed and incorporated into new statements or new supporting information for the following rounds. Stakeholders agreed a set of principles based on the consensus statements on which future guidance should be based.
Results
Sixty SMEs completed Round 1, 53 Round 2 (88%) and 49 Round 3 (82%). Consensus was reached on 91 statements (89 agree, 2 disagree) covering a broad range of domains related to: extrication terminology, extrication goals and approach, self-extrication, disentanglement, clinical care, immobilisation, patient-focused extrication, emergency services call and triage, and audit and research standards. Thirty-three statements did not reach consensus.
Conclusion
This study has demonstrated consensus across a large panel of multidisciplinary SMEs on many key areas of extrication and related practice that will provide a key foundation in the development of evidence-based guidance for this subject area
