The X-ray Properties of the Nearby Star-Forming Galaxy IC 342: The XMM-Newton View
We present the X-ray properties of IC342 using XMM-Newton. Thirty-five
sources are detected coincident with the disk of IC342 (more than tripling the
number known), of which ~31 are likely to be intrinsic to IC342. This
population shows a range of spectral properties and has an X-ray luminosity
function slope and infrared luminosity comparable to that of starburst galaxies
such as M82 and the Antennae, while its relative lack of extended X-ray
emission is similar to the properties of quiescent spirals. We do detect
long-term variability between this observation and the 1991 ROSAT and 1993/2000
ASCA observations for five sources. Notably, the second most luminous source
IC342 X-2 is is found to be in its the lowest luminosity state observed for X-2
to date, although the slope of the spectrum is intermediate between the
previously observed low/hard and high/soft states. IC342 X-1, on the other
hand, is found to be in an identical state to that observed in 2000 with ASCA.
Assuming X-1 is in an anomalous very high (VH) state, then either (1) X-1 has
remained in this state between 2000 and 2002, and is therefore the longest
duration VH-state binary ever observed, or (2) it was simply caught in a VH
state by chance in both the 2000 ASCA and 2002 XMM-Newton observations. We have
also confirmed the ROSAT HRI result that the nucleus of IC342 is made up of
both point-like and extended emission. The relative fluxes of the two spectral
components suggest that the nucleus is complex, with a soft extended component

Neural Modeling and Control of Diesel Engine with Pollution Constraints
The paper describes a neural approach for modelling and control of a
turbocharged Diesel engine. A neural model, whose structure is mainly based on
some physical equations describing the engine behaviour, is built for the
rotation speed and the exhaust gas opacity. The model is composed of three
interconnected neural submodels, each of them constituting a nonlinear
multi-input single-output error model. The structural identification and the
parameter estimation from data gathered on a real engine are described. The
neural direct model is then used to determine a neural controller of the
engine, in a specialized training scheme minimising a multivariable criterion.
Simulations show the effect of the pollution constraint weighting on a
trajectory tracking of the engine speed. Neural networks, which are flexible
and parsimonious nonlinear black-box models, with universal approximation
capabilities, can accurately describe or control complex nonlinear systems,
with little a priori theoretical knowledge. The presented work extends optimal
neuro-control to the multivariable case and shows the flexibility of neural
optimisers. Considering the preliminary results, it appears that neural
networks can be used as embedded models for engine control, to satisfy the more
and more restricting pollutant emission legislation. Particularly, they are
able to model nonlinear dynamics and outperform during transients the control

Avalanches in compressed porous SiO2-based materials
The failure dynamics in SiO2-based porous materials under compression, namely the synthetic glass Gelsil and three natural sandstones, has been studied for slowly increasing compressive uniaxial stress with rates between 0.2 and 2.8 kPa/s. The measured collapsed dynamics is similar to Vycor, which is another synthetic porous SiO2 glass similar to Gelsil but with a different porous mesostructure. Compression occurs by jerks of strain release and a major collapse at the failure point. The acoustic emission and shrinking of the samples during jerks are measured and analyzed. The energy of acoustic emission events, its duration, and waiting times between events show that the failure process follows avalanche criticality with power law statistics over ca. 4 decades with a power law exponent ε 1.4 for the energy distribution. This exponent is consistent with the mean-field value for the collapse of granular media. Besides the absence of length, energy, and time scales, we demonstrate the existence of aftershock correlations during the failure process
The nature of domain walls in ultrathin ferromagnets revealed by scanning nanomagnetometry
The recent observation of current-induced domain wall (DW) motion with large
velocity in ultrathin magnetic wires has opened new opportunities for
spintronic devices. However, there is still no consensus on the underlying
mechanisms of DW motion. Key to this debate is the DW structure, which can be
of Bloch or N\'eel type, and dramatically affects the efficiency of the
different proposed mechanisms. To date, most experiments aiming to address this
question have relied on deducing the DW structure and chirality from its motion
under additional in-plane applied fields, which is indirect and involves strong
assumptions on its dynamics. Here we introduce a general method enabling
direct, in situ, determination of the DW structure in ultrathin ferromagnets.
It relies on local measurements of the stray field distribution above the DW
using a scanning nanomagnetometer based on the Nitrogen-Vacancy defect in
diamond. We first apply the method to a Ta/Co40Fe40B20(1 nm)/MgO magnetic wire
and find clear signature of pure Bloch DWs. In contrast, we observe left-handed
N\'eel DWs in a Pt/Co(0.6 nm)/AlOx wire, providing direct evidence for the
presence of a sizable Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) at the Pt/Co
interface. This method offers a new path for exploring interfacial DMI in

Consequences of timing of organic enrichment provision on pig performance, health and stress resilience after weaning and regrouping
Publication history: Accepted - 20 August 2022; Published online - 29 September 2022Most pigs in slatted systems are provided with enrichment meeting only minimum legal requirements. We aimed to explore the effects of a novel enrichment treatment consisting of daily provided fodder beet and jute bags for pigs in slatted systems, and investigate the timing of enrichment provision on performance, health and stress resilience. We used 280 weaners allocated into standard (S, meeting only legal requirements consisting of a plastic toy and softwood) or enriched (E) treatment (n = 14 groups/treatment). At regrouping during the grower to finisher transition, pigs were either kept in the same treatment (EE, SS) or switched from enriched to standard (ES) and vice versa (SE); each treatment was replicated on five groups. Pigs were weighted at the start and end of weaner, and finisher stage, and feed intake was recorded. Occurrence of scouring, respiratory problems, locomotor disorders, tail, ear, and body lesions were recorded twice a week. Ten males per treatment were sampled for saliva on days 1, 2 and 4, either postweaning or after the housing switch. Saliva samples were analysed for cortisol, alpha-amylase, haptoglobin (Hp), and adenosine deaminase. Additionally, these pigs were sampled for hair at the start and end of weaner, and end of finisher stage to analyse for hair cortisol and cortisone. We found that E weaners consumed less feed (P = 0.04), had better FCR (feed conversion ratio, P = 0.03) and less ear lesions for two weeks postweaning (P = 0.04), and tended to have lower occurrence of scouring (P = 0.07) and higher salivary cortisol concentrations (P = 0.09) than S weaners. Effects of enrichment treatment during weaner stage on performance were carried through to finisher stage, with EE and ES pigs having better FCR (P = 0.0009) and higher BW (P = 0.0001) compared to SS and SE pigs. E treatment during finisher stage decreased feed intake (P = 0.04) and tended to decrease Hp levels (P = 0.07). There was a significant interaction between enrichment treatments during weaner and finisher stages on finisher body lesions: EE finishers had less lesions than SS, ES, and SE finishers (P = 0.04). There were no other significant differences caused either by enrichment treatment during weaner/finisher stage or their interaction. We conclude that the novel enrichment applied at weaner stage had positive effects on ear lesions and performance, which were carried through to finisher stage. Body lesions were affected by its application during both stages, with finishers receiving the enrichment treatment throughout (EE) having reduced body lesions than the rest of the finishers.This research was part of the EU-China HealthyLivestock project. Examining the Seyfert - Starburst Connection with Arcsecond Resolution Radio Continuum Observations
We compare the arcsecond-scale circumnuclear radio continuum properties
between five Seyfert and five starburst galaxies, concentrating on the search
for any structures that could imply a spatial or causal connection between the
nuclear activity and a circumnuclear starburst ring. No evidence is found in
the radio emission for a link between the triggering or feeding of nuclear
activity and the properties of circumnuclear star formation. Conversely, there
is no clear evidence of nuclear outflows or jets triggering activity in the
circumnuclear rings of star formation. Interestingly, the difference in the
angle between the apparent orientation of the most elongated radio emission and
the orientation of the major axis of the galaxy is on average larger in
Seyferts than in starburst galaxies, and Seyferts appear to have a larger
physical size scale of the circumnuclear radio continuum emission. The
concentration, asymmetry, and clumpiness parameters of radio continuum emission
in Seyferts and starbursts are comparable, as are the radial profiles of radio
continuum and near-infrared line emission. The circumnuclear star formation and
supernova rates do not depend on the level of nuclear activity. The radio
emission usually traces the near-infrared Br-gamma and H2 1-0 S(1) line
emission on large spatial scales, but locally their distributions are
different, most likely because of the effects of varying local magnetic fields

Statistical Similarity between the Compression of a Porous Material and Earthquakes
It has long been stated that there are profound analogies between fracture experiments and earthquakes; however, few works attempt a complete characterization of the parallels between these so separate phenomena. We study the acoustic emission events produced during the compression of Vycor (SiO2). The Gutenberg-Richter law, the modified Omori's law, and the law of aftershock productivity hold for a minimum of 5 decades, are independent of the compression rate, and keep stationary for all the duration of the experiments. The waiting-time distribution fulfills a unified scaling law with a power-law exponent close to 2.45 for long times, which is explained in terms of the temporal variations of the activity rate
New Observations of Extra-Disk Molecular Gas in Interacting Galaxy Systems, Including a Two-Component System in Stephan's Quintet
We present new CO (1 - 0) observations of eleven extragalactic tails and
bridges in nine interacting galaxy systems, almost doubling the number of such
features with sensitive CO measurements. Eight of these eleven features were
undetected in CO to very low CO/HI limits, with the most extreme case being the
NGC 7714/5 bridge. This bridge contains luminous H II regions and has a very
high HI column density (1.6 X 10^21 cm^-2 in the 55" CO beam), yet was
undetected in CO to rms T(R)* = 2.4 mK. The HI column density is higher than
standard H2 and CO self-shielding limits for solar-metallicity gas, suggesting
that the gas in this bridge is metal-poor and has an enhanced N(H2)/I(CO) ratio
compared to the Galactic value. Only one of the eleven features in our sample
was unambiguously detected in CO, a luminous HI-rich star formation region near
an optical tail in the compact group Stephan's Quintet. We detect CO at two
widely separated velocities in this feature, at ~6000 km/s and ~6700 km/s. Both
of these components have HI and H-alpha counterparts. These velocities
correspond to those of galaxies in the group, suggesting that this gas is
material that has been removed from two galaxies in the group. The
CO/HI/H-alpha ratios for both components are similar to global values for

High sensitivity X-ray phase contrast imaging by laboratory grating-based interferometry at high Talbot order geometry
X-ray phase contrast imaging is a powerful analysis technique for materials science and biomedicine. Here, we report on laboratory grating-based X-ray interferometry employing a microfocus X-ray source and a high Talbot order (35th) asymmetric geometry to achieve high angular sensitivity and high spatial resolution X-ray phase contrast imaging in a compact system (total length <1 m). The detection of very small refractive angles (∼50 nrad) at an interferometer design energy of 19 keV was enabled by combining small period X-ray gratings (1.0, 1.5 and 3.0 µm) and a single-photon counting X-ray detector (75 µm pixel size). The performance of the X-ray interferometer was fully characterized in terms of angular sensitivity and spatial resolution. Finally, the potential of laboratory X-ray phase contrast for biomedical imaging is demonstrated by obtaining high resolution X-ray phase tomographies of a mouse embryo embedded in solid paraffin and a formalin-fixed full-thickness sample of human left ventricle in water with a spatial resolution of 21.5 µm
Paraphrastic Reformulations in Spoken Corpora
International audienceOur work addresses the automatic detection of paraphrastic reformulation in French spoken corpora. The proposed approach is syn-tagmatic. It is based on specific markers and the specificities of the spoken language. Manual multi-dimensional annotation performed by two annotators provides fine-grained reference data. An automatic method is proposed in order to decide whether sentences contain or not paraphras-tic relations. The obtained results show up to 66.4% precision. Analysis of the manual annotations indicates that few paraphrastic segments show morphological modifications (inflection, derivation or compounding) and that the syntactic equivalence between the segments is seldom respected, as these usually belong to different syntactic categories
