Near-field enhancement and sub-wavelength imaging in the optical region using a pair of two-dimensional arrays of metal nanospheres
Near-field enhancement and sub-wavelength imaging properties of a system
comprising a coupled pair of two-dimensional arrays of resonant nanospheres are
studied. The concept of using two coupled material sheets possessing surface
mode resonances for evanescent field enhancement is already well established in
the microwave region. This paper shows that the same principles can be applied
also in the optical region, where the performance of the resonant sheets can be
realized with the use of metallic nanoparticles. In this paper we present
design of such structures and study the electric field distributions in the
image plane of such superlens.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure

Electromagnetic wave refraction at an interface of a double wire medium
Plane-wave reflection and refraction at an interface with a double wire
medium is considered. The problem of additional boundary conditions (ABC) in
application to wire media is discussed and an ABC-free approach, known in the
solid state physics, is used. Expressions for the fields and Poynting vectors
of the refracted waves are derived. Directions and values of the power density
flow of the refracted waves are found and the conservation of the power flow
through the interface is checked. The difference between the results, given by
the conventional model of wire media and the model, properly taking into
account spatial dispersion, is discussed.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figure

Building Robust Active Galactic Nuclei Mock Catalogs to Unveil Black Hole Evolution and for Survey Planning
The statistical distributions of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), i.e., accreting supermassive black holes (BHs), in mass, space, and time are controlled by a series of key properties, namely, the BH-galaxy scaling relations, Eddington ratio distributions, and fraction of active BH (duty cycle). Shedding light on these properties yields strong constraints on the AGN triggering mechanisms while providing a clear baseline to create useful mock catalogs for the planning of large galaxy surveys. Here we delineate a robust methodology to create mock AGN catalogs built on top of large N-body dark matter simulations via state-of-the-art semiempirical models. We show that by using as independent tests the AGN clustering at fixed X-ray luminosity, galaxy stellar mass, and BH mass, along with the fraction of AGNs in groups and clusters, it is possible to significantly narrow down the choice in the relation between BH mass and host galaxy stellar mass, the duty cycle, and the average Eddington ratio distribution, delivering well-suited constraints to guide cosmological models for the coevolution of BHs and galaxies. Avoiding such a step-by-step methodology inevitably leads to strong degeneracies in the final mock catalogs, severely limiting their usefulness in understanding AGN evolution and in survey planning and testing.Peer reviewe
Risk of donor-site lymphatic vessel dysfunction after microvascular lymph node transfer
BACKGROUND:
Microvascular lymph node transfer has been used to improve lymphatic function in patients with lymphoedema. We previously reported changes in the lymphatic function of the donor limb after lymph node transfer. For this reason, we modified our surgical method to be more conservative.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS:
Microvascular lymph node transfer was performed in 13 patients using the previously reported original method. Sixteen patients were operated upon using the more conservative modified method. Lymphatic function in the donor limb was evaluated using volumetry, lymphoscintigraphy and tissue water percentage.
RESULTS:
In the original method group, the donor-limb volume was on average greater (199 ± 540 ml) than in the non-operated control limb. The volume difference between the limbs was smaller (151 ± 463 ml) in the modified method group. Two patients in the original method group had abnormal transport index (Ti) values in lymphoscintigraphy indicating decreased lymphatic function of the donor limb. In the modified method group, the Ti-values remained normal. The tissue water percentage of the donor limb was on average 40% ± 4% in the original method group and 40% ± 3% in the modified method group. Importantly, none of the patients in either group developed clinical lymphoedema in the donor limb during the 11-84-month follow-up.
CONCLUSIONS:
Even with the more conservative lymph node transfer method, we can observe slight, subclinical signs of lymphatic dysfunction in the donor limb. These results highlight the importance of minimizing the surgical exploration in the inguinal area and avoiding damage to the lymphatic vessels or sentinel nodes draining the lower limb.</p
The link among X-ray spectral properties, AGN structure and the host galaxy
In this work, we compare the SMBH and host galaxy properties of X-ray
obscured and unobscured AGN. For that purpose, we use X-ray
detected AGN in the 4XMM-DR11 catalogue for which there are available
measurements for their X-ray spectral parameters, from the XMM2Athena Horizon
2020 European project. We calculate the host galaxy properties via SED fitting
analysis. Our final sample consists of 1 443 AGN. In the first part of our
analysis, we use different N thresholds (10 cm or 10
cm), taking also into account the uncertainties associated with the
N measurements, to classify these sources into obscured and unobscured. We
find that obscured AGN tend to live in more massive systems that have lower SFR
compared to their unobscured counterparts. However, only the difference in
stellar mass, M, appears statistically significant (). The
results do not depend on the N threshold used to classify AGN. The
differences in M and SFR are not statistically significant for luminous AGN
(). Our findings also show that
unobscured AGN have, on average, higher specific black hole accretion rates
compared to their obscured counterparts. In the second part of our analysis, we
cross-match the 1 443 X-ray AGN with the SDSS DR16 quasar catalogue to obtain
information on the SMBH properties of our sources. This results in 271 type 1
AGN, at . Our findings show that type 1 AGN with increased N
( cm) tend to have higher M compared to AGN with lower
N values, at similar M. The M/M ratio remains consistent for
N values below 10 cm, but it exhibits signs of an increase at
higher N values. Finally, we detect a correlation between and
Eddington ratio, but only for type 1 sources with N cm.Comment: A&A accepted for publication. 15 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables.

Aiemmissa tutkimuksissa keskitytään juuri häiriöihin, joten diagnoosittomien oppilaiden tutkimiselle on suuri tarve.
Vastauksissa nousee esiin tarkkaavaisuuden polarisoituminen, koska tarkkaavaisuuden ääripäät korostuvat.
Coupling and Guided Propagation along Parallel Chains of Plasmonic Nanoparticles
Here, extending our previous work on this topic, we derive a dynamic
closed-form dispersion relation for a rigorous analysis of guided wave
propagation along coupled parallel linear arrays of plasmonic nanoparticles,
operating as optical 'two-line' waveguides. Compared to linear arrays of
nanoparticles, our results suggest that these waveguides may support longer
propagation lengths and more confined beams, operating analogously to
transmission-line segments at lower frequencies. Our formulation fully takes
into account the whole dynamic interaction among the infinite number of
nanoparticles composing the parallel arrays, considering also realistic
presence of losses and the frequency dispersion of the involved plasmonic
materials, providing further physical insights into the guidance properties
that characterize this geometry.Comment: 34 pages, 11 figure
