Implementing critical literacy in a Tongan bilingual classroom

This report describes a research study which trialled a unit of work designed for senior high school levels in a Tongan bilingual classroom. The main purpose of the study was to investigate the appropriateness and possible benefits of using critical literacy as a teaching strategy to teach literature in bilingual classrooms in Tonga. A critical literacy approach is relatively new in Tonga, so the study set out to test if this approach would contribute to making the teaching of English more innovative and student-centred. The methodology used in this study was a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods within an action research paradigm. One action research cycle spanned three months for trialling of the study unit and for collecting data. A class of thirty-four students from one Form Six class participated in this study, along with their English teacher as a participant observer. Eleven teachers of English from the same school also participated in interviews for further data collection. I took the role of teacher-researcher. In addition to teaching the study unit, I conducted interviews with teachers and students for further data-gathering. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the data indicated that both participating teachers and students identified that a critical literacy approach to teaching of English as a subject was highly appropriate to use in Tongan classrooms. Teachers identified resources to be a detriment to the successful implementation of a critical literacy approach. While this concern is acknowledged as a long-term one, in the short-term, existing available resources can still be of practical use. The study was conducted under a bilingual program that might be viewed by researchers on bilingual education as a subtractive bilingual program. Findings related to students‟ ability in both Tongan and English language signified a very low competence in these two languages. But findings related to bilingual teaching indicated a mismatch between the newly adopted bilingual curriculum in Tonga and Tongan English teachers‟ perceptions of bilingual education. It was shown in this study that this mismatch stemmed from a lack of teacher understanding of bilingual education. A couple of pedagogical issues were recommended in order to clear up this misunderstanding. The report concludes with the researcher‟s recommendations for the explicit inclusion of critical literacy in the Tonga Language curriculum. Parental involvement and teachers training are two issues to address in order to achieve a successful implementation of the newly adopted bilingual curriculum where a paradigm shift in teaching is necessary. Recommendations for further research are also included

Whipple procedure at the University Hospital of North Norway (UNN)

Background Pancreatic cancer is the fourth most common cause of cancer-related death in Norway. At the University Hospital of North Norway (UNN) Tromsø, the Whipple procedure is the preferred method of treating resectable pancreatic cancer. Results after surgical treatment are dependent on the volume of procedures undertaken, and UNN Tromsø is considered a low-volume hospital. Our hypothesis is that a low-volume hospital such as UNN Tromsø can accomplish Whipple procedure with acceptable levels of complications and survival rates. Material and methods Outcomes after all Whipple procedures performed between 2008 and 2017 at UNN Tromsø were collected from all hospitals in northern Norway. Descriptive statistics, a chi-square test, multiple and linear regression analyses, Kaplan–Meier survival analyses, and the log-rank test were performed to describe the data material. The Whipple procedure was performed on 156 patients: 91 (58.3%) men. Average age was 66.3 years (SD 10.2). Results An R0 resection margin was achieved in 112 (71.8%) of the procedures. 90 (57.7%) patients were discharged to non-index hospitals. 32 (20.5%) patients were readmitted during the first 30 postoperative days, and 36 (23.1%) patients were reoperated on. 35.0% of the patients experienced an Accordion score of 3 or higher. Twenty (12.8%) patients experienced postoperative pancreatic fistula. Delayed gastric emptying was experienced in 31 (19.9%) patients, postoperative bile leakage in 10 (6.4%) patients, and postoperative hemorrhage in 10 (6.4%) patients. 74 (47.4%) patients had pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) as a postoperative histology finding. During the period of follow-up, the postoperative 90-day mortality was 4 (2.6%) patients. The 5-year overall survival was 21.6% for PDAC patients. Conclusion With a 90-day postoperative mortality of 2.6% for all patients and a 5-year survival for PDAC patients of 21.6%, one may conclude that the treatment results are in line with international standards for high-volume centers

Review of the joint programme: "Education for all in Madagascar (2011-2014)"

    Get PDF
This review analyses the joint programme, “Education for All in Madagascar” (2011-2014), which was financed by The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and implemented by three United Nations (UN) organizations: the United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Labour Organization (ILO). The overall objective of the joint programme, Education for all, was to keep the educational system functioning during the transition period in Madagascar (2009-2013), and to improve important educational indicators; Primary school Net Enrolment Rate, Primary school Completion Rate and Drop-out Rate, in eight selected regions. The review team finds the activities implemented through this programme to have been an essential support to the system, and one of the reasons why the educational system to some extent has remained operational at different educational levels after all these years of crisis. As an overall conclusion, a large part of the expected results at output level have been met or are expected to be met within the programme period. Results that have not yet been met are mostly related to quality, with the delay being primarily due to the changing political context. Regarding comparison of impact level in schools data, it has not yet been available. Consequently the comparison of schools where only one or no agency is present with schools where all agencies are present, and comparison of regions that are covered by the programme with those that are not could not be carried out in this review. This review presents lessons learned as well as recommendations for future priorities in the education sector in Madagascar, a country which now is at a very crucial moment of developing new policies.publishedVersio

Is tax transparency associated with a better ESG score? An empiric look into the state of Tax transparency and ESG for OBX25

    Get PDF
In this thesis, our primary goal is to examine the state of tax transparency, then identify the relationship between ESG score and tax transparency performance for the Norwegian companies that make up the OBX25 index. To accomplish this, we conduct a documentary analysis of all relevant organizational documents and sources to assess the tax transparency performance of each company while we extract ESG data from the Refinitiv database. The newly introduced tax standard, GRI 207, is operationalized by assigning numerical values for each disclosure if the content of the disclosures is covered in organizational sources. In addition, we explore measurements of company characteristics to examine potential factors that may contribute and explain the tax transparency performance. Our findings show that the tax transparency performance for companies listed on the OBX25 index leaves a lot to be desired, with a relatively low compliance rate when an established framework for sustainability reporting, GRI 207, is utilized. This is evidenced by the average tax transparency performance of 22.6%. We find that companies that are larger, more profitable, and have a higher degree of public ownership, achieve the highest tax transparency performance. We also find evidence that tax transparency performance and ESG score is connected. When companies are sorted after tax transparency performance based on segments, our findings suggest that a better tax transparency performance is connected with a better ESG score. In addition, we find a low number of outliners in the sorting matrices, insinuating that most companies´ individual score does correspond with the ESG score.nhhma

Church networks, peacebuilding and women’s participation in Eastern DRC and the Great Lakes Region – a mapping study

    Get PDF
This report (i) map the religious civil society networks, (ii) assess their role in local and regional peace processes and (iii) address the organisation of women and the promotion of issues of women, peace and security within these networks. The focus in this report is on the linkages between provincial centres and churches at village level in the vast rural areas of the Kivus where civilians continue to suffer from war crimes. The legitimacy of the church in peacebuilding at local and national levels hinges on the assumption that (i) the church leadership has a mandate based in their constituency on the ground, and that (ii) church coordinating structures in the province or at the national level have the capacity to coordinate church activities at lower levels of the church hierarchy.publishedVersio
