Analysis of the singular value decomposition as a tool for processing microarray expression data
We give two informative derivations of a spectral algorithm for clustering and partitioning a bi-partite graph. In the first case we begin with a discrete optimization problem that relaxes into a tractable continuous analogue. In the second case we use the power method to derive an iterative interpretation of the algorithm. Both versions reveal a natural approach for re-scaling the edge weights and help to explain the performance of the algorithm in the presence of outliers. Our motivation for this work is in the analysis of microarray data from bioinformatics, and we give some numerical results for a publicly available acute leukemia data set
PROCESSING OF SLAR IMAGES
An X-band Side Looking Airborne Radar (SLAR) has been developed and constructed.
The recorded raw images had to be corrected both radiometrically and geometrically.
To achieve this goal, different digital image processing methods have been applied. The
obtained results are images fitting well to the original maps of the landscapes. Final
resolution of the corrected images is 10 ... 15 m
A scanning drift tube apparatus for spatio-temporal mapping of electron swarms
A "scanning" drift tube apparatus, capable of mapping of the spatio-temporal
evolution of electron swarms, developing between two plane electrodes under the
effect of a homogeneous electric field, is presented. The electron swarms are
initiated by photoelectron pulses and the temporal distributions of the
electron flux are recorded while the electrode gap length (at a fixed electric
field strength) is varied. Operation of the system is tested and verified with
argon gas, the measured data are used for the evaluation of the electron bulk
drift velocity. The experimental results for the space-time maps of the
electron swarms - presented here for the first time - also allow clear
observation of deviations from hydrodynamic transport. The swarm maps are also
reproduced by particle simulations
Structure analysis of proteins, peptides and metal complexes by vibrational circular dichroism
There are two principal forms of vibrational optical activity (VOA), an IR form referred to as vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) and Raman form known as Raman optical activity (ROA). This paper reports examples of the application of VCD spectroscopy for the determination of the absolute configuration and conformation of chiral molecules, e. g. cyclic beta-lactams. VCD spectroscopy can be applied for the characterization of the conformation of proteins and peptides in solution. VCD based conformational analysis of cyclic peptides is discussed. Examples are the cyclic hexapeptide cyclo(Pro(2)-Gly-Pro(2)-Gly) and cyclic peptides comprising beta-homoamino acids (trans-2-aminocyclopentane or trans-2-aminocyclohexane carboxylic acid). Structure analysis by VCD of opiate peptides, glycopeptides, peptidomimetics and chiral transition metal complexes are also discussed
Histidine residue 252 of the Photosystem II D1 polypeptide is involved in a light-induced cross-linking of the polypeptide with the α subunit of cytochrome b-559: study of a site-directed mutant of Synechocystis PCC 6803
AbstractProperties of the Photosystem II (PSII) complex were examined in the wild-type (control) strain of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis PCC 6803 and its site-directed mutant D1-His252Leu in which the histidine residue 252 of the D1 polypeptide was replaced by leucine. This mutation caused a severe blockage of electron transfer between the PSII electron acceptors QA and QB and largely inhibited PSII oxygen evolving activity. Strong illumination induced formation of a D1–cytochrome b-559 adduct in isolated, detergent-solubilized thylakoid membranes from the control but not the mutant strain. The light-induced generation of the adduct was suppressed after prior modification of thylakoid proteins either with the histidine modifier platinum-terpyridine-chloride or with primary amino group modifiers. Anaerobic conditions and the presence of radical scavengers also inhibited the appearance of the adduct. The data suggest that the D1–cytochrome adduct is the product of a reaction between the oxidized residue His252 of the D1 polypeptide and the N-terminal amino group of the cytochrome α subunit. As the rate of the D1 degradation in the control and mutant strains is similar, formation of the adduct does not seem to represent a required intermediary step in the D1 degradation pathway
A systematic review of pedagogies that support, engage and improve the educational outcomes of Aboriginal students
This review analyses studies that identify pedagogies to support, engage and improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student outcomes. Some studies focus on pedagogies to support and engage, while others describe pedagogies that are designed to improve engagement, attendance and academic skills. The role of context emerges as a key theme, particularly in remote areas. In larger studies, Aboriginal students are often a subset of a larger student group, included because of socio-economic status and achievement levels. Key findings indicate a disconnect between practice and outcomes where links to improved outcomes are by implication rather than evidence. Further, definitions and detail about pedagogies are mostly absent, relying on ‘common understandings’ of what pedagogy means. This review highlights that most of the research identifies effective pedagogies to engage and support Aboriginal students rather than to improve their educational outcomes
